- The Dinan Engine department just finished development of a custom BMW S85 engine that is found in the BMW M5 (E60) and BMW M6 (E63/4). Dinan bored and stroked the BMW 5L engine up to 5.8L then installed performance cams, dry sump oil system and a racing exhaust. A custom software tune was written and when run on race gas (98) produced 720 hp @ 8300 RPM and 497 lb-ft @ 6900 RPM!
Designed for use in the Riley Technologies (www.rileytech.com) 2011 Riley MkXXV track day car.

For anyone wondering why the headers are purple is because the steel is so hot that it emits so much infared radiation that the camera sees it as this purplish light. In person the headers would look orange or even yellow if they were hot enough.
I thought it was a weird material or something,
That engine in an M5 Touring would make one of the most badass family wagons ever!! :-D
Check out the channel Fede perlam😏
@Ghost !!! I'm curious. What do you get out of this comment? obviously nobody is gonna believe that your parents have a racing developped engine in an M5 touring...
and be the most unreliable wagon ever. 😂
@@youridv thats the engine it came with. The m5 touring came with this engine but stock.
@@athallarayyan8394 No, they are not as bad as people make out once you get the rod bearings sorted.
I’m back again after all these years, Because this gem appeared on my recommendations.
Same lol great vid
The same bro jajajahahajaj
Same !!
same lol
Same 🎉
Headers glowing purple :O
Red
Almost purple. It's infra red. Only camera saw it.
is the camera
Its uv light, dont be fooled
@@AspentheGuardian what is that metal?
Gotta love the instant throttle response from the ITB's and the awesome sound they make. Nice looking set of headers as well. Thanks for sharing this.
The colour when the engine starts to heat up is just awesome...
I have this engine in my M5 running at around 540bhp and that’s enough tbh but plus 700 bhp is crazy 😎🇬🇧👍
I used to watch this many times like a year ago and 2, and now this is my first comment here!! LOVE that sound, and GREAT VIDEO, man!!!!
This is f12 ferarri teritory lol... Awesome engine!
FX not true. This engine achieved those numbers on race gas. Race gas offers a significant timing advantage over conventional street gasoline
U re wrong bro
@@TheDarkstarsk8allday the f12 has a v12 engine and not a v10 plus the f12 is 6.0 or larger if I remember correctly
@@FishFind3000 this is 720 at the crank. Probarbly 600 on the street
@Louai Amrouche no but i just mentioned that the hp is less at the wheel than at the flywheel
I was not expecting that Startup sound. Amazing.
That beautiful V10 sound.
i love the purple glowing XD XD
The masterpiece of all road going engines
I love this ASMR , i need longer version!
Purple headers....I like it!
That startup sound is pure ecstasy for the ears
I wish to see this motor in a M5
@Polat Alemdar i dont think so
Originally in E60 so if you don't put those big exhaust I think it is possible
That's where the motor came from, lol. It's just bored and stroked with cams, race gas , headers, and tune. Same block , same size. Oil pan is probably different due to dry sump.
Back again after so many years..this is like some kind of a fuckin love story
the purple glow from the heat looks awesome
Better than Viper engine :D
lol the viper engine is trash
Rasmus Rasmussen I prefer the viper engine
A viper motor is both much more powerful and more reliable than a stock s85, put this almost of money into that v10 and 900hp N/A is easily achievable!......well I guess it’s just your opinion anyways.
mentioning the viper block with the s85 is an insult to the great s85
except this one would easily broke especially the rod bearings
My dream engine for my dream car, awesome! Thanks for sharing.
WHAT A FUCKING BEAST
For the people asking about the headers glowing purple I believe that is because they are magnesium, which do glow purple at high temps.
If they where Magnesium they would burst into flames at that temperature. They are made from Titanium.
The reason for the purple headers is that the camera has an adjusted white balance. I'd bet you that the lights in the shop are yellow, and so the camera shifts to compensate, which makes the shop look correct, but the otherwise red headers look purple.
Ubernoob85 you mite be on to something here, titanium can be multi colored but never seen it like this
+Ubernoob85 I was thinking white balance as well. while I'm not going to argue over heated magnesium color. this effect looked more to camera settings
Have you ever heard of something called Plasma Nitriding?
When Nitrous oxide (NOS) combusts with gasoline, nitrogen ions being diffused onto the exhaust pipe, creating a purple glow rather than a orange one like you're used to seeing. It surface hardens the pipes just like in plasma nitriding.
When I saw that thumbnail I instantly put my volume down lmao thing looks mad in purple
Those headers are nuts! Reminds me of that tube screen saver.
Same Firing Order and angle as Huracan V10
Yet powerful
Damn...🔥🌚
So the bass from this video made my mouse dance!
I want this motor so badly in my 1999 E39 540i !!!
Holy hp-torque ratio... still sick.
that is so cool how u can rev the engine when its out in the open :D
You never knew?
Whoa!!!! I would love to have this in an e46 or e92 m3 LOL
Starts to sounds like an F1 engine at 1:03.. I wish it kept on revving :D Awesome engine.
You should hear this in person with a straight pipe. It sounds just like F1.
Makes sense since it's F1 derived
The S85 is derived from their F1 engines.
Genius Garage sent me here :)
Nice RGB led setup 👍
Now that's what I call a _DINAN Dash_ ! :)
Sporty character of that engine. Impress.
Now this is what true race engines means SOUND = POWER with NO HELP (like turbo crap small shity new engines!) Dear GOD that engine Sound is SO Magnificent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and nothing like making Power just with engine not by using so damn fun :-D
A turbo hondo will fuckin gab what ever thats in by 3 train lengths
@@vincentyoung8786 does the race car at the end look like the sort of thing trying to drag race turbo Honda's you utter mouth breather
Best v10 sound ever (and now we expect those braindead lexus lfa fans)
I git this recomended 9 years after it got published.
Sweet S85!
Those headers if I'm not mistaken are made by Supersprint in Italy.
I like how race gas for you guys is 98 and here in sweden we can go too some gasstations and get like 100 octane or more but the lowest we get is 95 octane and its like 1.5 dollar for 1 liter
Same in Germany. Although technically Octane 100 is the limit, you can get 102 Octane here.
This describes how likely the gas is to explode.
@@meXoBER lol
Different octane method. Youse youse AKI in Europe we use RON in the US. 98 AKI in Europe is 93 in the US.
It's a battle of percentages when spinning that fast. Light weight materials and coefficient expansion ratios.
purple glow of exhaust pipes is amazing!
Its red, only the camera sees purple.
Sounds absolutely delicious
from 0:48 to 1:07 this sound changing and mechanical sounds are so damn good ❤
Pagani Zonda R power with an M5 V10... absolutly marvelous
Wow 9 years ago
Impressive numbers
When the mustang guy at the car group won’t stop revving
sounds so sick
Yerrr that sounded like a Conrod was going thru the block at first rev

benchmarking and giving it a good shakedown is very important
the exhaust plenum glowing purple is wiked cool
Recommended-sub-10-years-later gang!
Why are the headers purple??
Wondering the same thing
It almost sounds like the p engine from the legendary lemans m3 gtr. Glorious sound.
RGB engine How cool ia that!😁
Why not, obviously you'd need all the proper supporting mods but this motor would handle turbos quite well.
@sochrd - Yes.
I don't like how newer engines instantly stop with sound when you let the throttle when older engines have continuous sound to it when you realise the throttle
Sounds like a bad water pump at idle like every bmw suffers from early on 🤣
Never ever in my life I seen purple fire

that video more interesting, an amazing picture that good job
Ave Maria, mainha!
That’s crazy. Seen plenty of glowing exhaust, but never purple lol
jaw drops
My dream... this Engine in an Wiesmann MF5!!!
oh oh riley
@Mech0z The manufacturers always measure engine power on the crankshaft. The motor performance (power and torque) are always "mapped" on a testbed like in this video :) So when you buy a car you must decrease the engine power by approximatly 20% to know the power on the wheels or make a full load curve on a chassis dyno. It's always like this
LEAN ENGINE LEAN ENGINE
Purrrrrrrr
Purrrrrrrr
Purple
Dank exhaust
Awesome 😎😎
*5:00** in the morning*
*anyone know what metal the headers are made of or why the headers are glowing purple?*
It glows purple because the camera lacks an IR filter, so it picks up the ones produced by the heated exhaust and they show as this purple light on a screen. It doesn't need to be of a particular metal
Headers looks like a nuclear reactor core.
98 in Murica counts as racing gas?
Octane is rated differently in different places. I've seen 100+ octane fuels elsewhere with worse knock rating than the 93 we have here commonly.
Ralfs Zemzars It's not RON
I have a local station that sells 110
in the us is a mix rating between ron and mon its (R+M)/2 so RON rating plus MON rating divided by 2.
So they sell leaded racing gas and it is not street legal, or it is a high ethanol blend.
Scary
Awesome
FUCKIN BANANAS!!!!
LONG LIVE THE KING !!!
Purple i like it xd
is this engine alive still ? make a new video ! id die to see !
well not if it had some type of variable boost control. its not a suggestion i'm just thinking out loud this thing would be insane with turbos. its not often you ever see a turbocharged v10.
Cool
Wow, that thing made like 680 Nm peak from 5.8 l n/a
that machine is powered by power stone
It looks purple on cam but off cam it's orange/red ish. Idk how to explain it but it happens alot. Put fire in front of sum cams and it will be purple :) try it
That's not even that extreme of a tune on the stroker. Probably good for like 750hp or more.
i know this video is older, but i have a question about the cams on the motor. is it still using the vanos system? or are the cams locked as in a conventional ohv system. cause im looking to build mine and want to bypass if you were the vanos crap, and just gear it to a fixed cam timing set up.
Звук провернутого вкладыша на холостых🤣
those 720hp is that power on the engine or output from the car? Because measuring on the motor directly compared to on the wheels is about 20% difference
Serious question, what makes the headers glow purple?
Fire. Basically it is fire burning in each of 10 cylinders which then flows through exhaust valves to the exhaust manifold. This fire makes only the exhaust manifold to glow because engine block, pistons and the cylinder head is water and oil cooled. And the exhaust manifold its basically made from titanium. Also this fire makes this engine sounds so good thanks to the free flow into the no-turbo exhaust.
A genuine question, is a dry sump oil system affect the sound of the car?
Nice 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@MrFatboxer its cuz of the paint i think...
if you heat up chrome i think it turns to a weird color..
can u put this on my e46 m3?
YES
Got a question for the car guys out there. If this engine makes 700+ hp, but just 500 torque, how does translate to performance? Top end power?
700nm is not a bad torque number, but yeah it has hella top end power
@@lukiotemmi So it reaches high speeds very quickly?
@@miseryparty3726 yeah but it requires high rpm
how come that when the exhaust gets hot it has a purple shine? is it cuz of the material or?
This would make a nice upgrade in an E34!!!!!!!!
