  • A charity is calling on the government to increase support after a survey showed more than half of people on universal credit ran out of food last month.
The Trussell Trust is urging the government to introduce an "essentials guarantee", so the basic rate of universal credit is always enough to cover life's essentials.

It depends on how generous the UK government want the social security to be, if they make it too generous then people will not want to be in work because they are getting government handouts.
This does not promote good moral behaviour.
However the system has to be there to support people as well, mybe there should be a limit to how long someone receives universal credit if they are unemployed on non medical grounds.
In the United States of America they limit public assistance and public handouts, and people have to find a job in six months, or rely on savings.
Zero hour contracts should be banned as well, there is a lot of people employed but still on universal credit.

It was appeal to certain types of people, like some in the comments section here.
The Tories taught them that all poor people were scroungers that hadn't worked hard... That there was millions of people that have never worked etc.

In the last 13 years we've gone from a few thousand emergency food parcels being needed to MILLIONS being needed.

lack of investment for decades by businesses, many jobs in the UK are unskilled - hence why big businesses like migration, they dont need to automate and hire more skilled labour fixing machines. A corrupt way of measuring inflation by the Bank of England. Ask youself, instead of handing out more cash, perhaps the government should actively reduce the cost of living by: building more homes, strengthen the pound so imports become cheaper. But they wont do that as many zombie businesses would become bankrupt. In the end they wont be able to stop it anyway and we are seeing only the begining.

Oh, poor souls! Think of the taxpayer who has to fund all this generosity, the more public spending is increased, the higher taxes have to be increased to pay for it, especially in a stagnant economy.
The onus is on UC claimants to improve their lot so that they become independent of government welfare hand-outs: work more hours, train for a career etc.
Too much of an entitlement culture, and not enough of people thinking of how they can contribute back to society.

The truth is our economy is not productive enough to support enough higher paid jobs for people to service the enormous rents/mortgages now.

I can go along with that if there was a system where that 2000 gets to be an allocation to accommodate such people to specific designated places and pay towards the basic needs (not wants) via some coupon method instead of outright providing money. Ideally it should also monitor their lifes as much as possible and offer some carrot/stick methods for them to develop. But I cant imagine this being realistic at this point both because it will be resource intensive to governments and their track record on efficiency isnt great.

If cigarettes are bought then the next benefits payment will come minus the money they spent on cigarettes/vapes/alcohol. Any luxuries or non essentials.
So they spend all there money then just rely on further handouts.

@@pearl2910 What a lie! Benefits are one of the largest expenditures in this country, which are crucifying those of us who pay taxes to fund them.

@@DavidGetlingThe biggest amount spent on welfare benefits is on pensions. As a matter of interest tax fraud is 9 times more than benefit fraud. That's the main problem.
