I spent two hours on the first 30 seconds of this. I've been playing guitar for 20 years, but for the last 10 I've played mostly finger style acoustic/folk. So this piece has everything to challenge me to go back to learner mode: complex phrasing, unusual note choices, fast picked/legato mix sections, right hand technique, left hand technique, rhythmic strummed difficulties, wide dynamics... Lage is a master. Digging in and working on learning this is making me fall in love with guitar after a two year hiatus from any regular playing (I am very rusty with a pick and lead lines). It's taken me back to formal practise. Slowing it down, taking one phrase at a time. Thank you so very much for your expertise in transcribing this, and your generosity for sharing it with us.

A Hint: It's not only about his miraculous technique. Anyone can hear "classical" guitar in his playing but recognizing understanding that angle of approach are two different things, especially for those of us who came to jazz via blues and rock. After becoming a huge fan and unsuccessfully trying to play several of his pieces a classical guitarist friend suggested I do some classical exercises and learn some of the classical "standards," especially some Leo Brouwer studies. This was very helpful not only with technique but (hard to explain) also made learning them a lot easier. Sorry for the long reply.

Well, he has gotten way more famous recently which is good for him. It's not all about fame in the end though.

Definitely a whole lot of Jim Hall in the musical approach, no doubt about it. Also the sound of a barely amplified archtop is a quintessential JH guitar sound. However Jim's tone is more rounded and the attack not so aggressive, as a long time JH fanatic I would never mistake this for Jim. Regards
Guitar's sound is completely different
I don’t hear Jim Hall in there at all, not tone wise, or playing wise. Except of course Jim is The Godfather of modern harmony on the instrument. Julian’s free form glissing and range and his tone on this actually reminds me of Les Paul...but there you go.
Excellent job! The man is just amazing! He's definitely one of my favorite guitarists and is playing solo guitar like nobody else, his own way which makes it even more special.

One small comment: at 2:43 make sure you listen for the low E string ringing out. The transcription doesn't notate it. Amazing work on possibly my all time favorite solo guitar arrangement. Julian is beyond description.
My friend and I discovered Julian 5 years ago at Wintergrass festival. He was playing with Chris Elderidge, and the rest is the best.

A beautiful rendition and impressive transcription. But why do you give the key signature as three (not two)
flats?
I was also going to say the same. The key is Gmin (Sol men). I guess a minor (excuse the pun) oversight.
Does anybody know what is going on in 3 bars after bar 70? Does Julian play Db9 in half of the bar 70 and then he plays in D7 through the rest of the bars?
Mmmm now that's a tricky one. My guess is that he's delaying the resolution on the Gm7 by using a bunch of different triads that are tensions of the Gm7. Every one of these group of notes can be seen as some D7alt. Abm is D13(b9b5), Gb+ is D7(#5), Fm is D7(b5#9) E is D13(b5) ....

Hi Francois, do you have any tips for learning transcription? Do you have any lessons? It would be a great idea for a RUclips series if you had the time.
Transcription is a LOT easier and faster when you do it away from your instrument. I did about 75 books for different publishers and rarely touched the guitar unless I needed to check an occasional fingering. I would warm up my ears in the morning then transcribe eight hours a day. It has definitely helped my ability to compose music, too

Beautiful playing by Julian Lage. Good job with the transcription-Although, I wish more attention were paid to musical spelling. D7 is spelled with and F#, not a Gb.
