I absolutely LOVE isolated vocals, I listen to Chester Bennington all the time and it's Chris's birthday today we also lost Chester today 6 years ago too😭
This was amaaaaazing! I was blown away by all the production tricks and tweaks that you pointed out; some of them, like you say, are really quite brilliant, and show how many of our most iconic and well-loved music and musicians may not be technically perfect, but perfectly THEMSELVES. The late Chris Cornell is still, in my opinion, one of the most naturally gifted modern-day vocalists, with a very unique voice...which the production team enhanced to perfection! Thanks for this exciting and fascinating examination of Black Hole Sun - soooo cool! :-)
I still sound like garbage when I sing 99% of the time and the one in the thousands of times that I attempt to do something that I then get what feels like the thing I'm going for and then on the recording I hear that I don't hit it but it it approaches it.. THAT is the thing that drives me every single day to push my voice into practice and never stop practicing and looking at things such as Chris's work and the many other amazing people on RUclips that do this type of stuff
Man, this was amazing and hard to hear all at the same time. I can feel the buzz you're getting from these stems, and I'm sharing and loving every damn second of it.
Man, ive been following you for a while, even some videos on your guitar times thing, but, really, you're pretty good mentor, teacher and everything else. it is, in a way, easy, to follow what you mean. you know what i mean? like, other people talking about vocals, music in general actually, cant achieve that level of explanation. thanks man. when im ready, ill go deep on your lessons, mid age guy with family is hard to follow everything we want, but your videos are up there.
This is so interesting to hear. I've never paid attention to those runs his making at 2'23 in the song. got goosepumps hearing this all alone. Thanks for bringing this to us!
I've watched hundreds upon hundreds of hours of production videos throughout the years, and I feel necessary to say that your approach should be the golden standard in these sorts of educational videos. You don't only analyze the performance itself (which is the backbone of the finished product), but go balls-deep, as in showing the exact parameters/settings with the exact plugins to get as close as possible results to the original. I'm currently aiming for that crisp Superunknown-vocal mix, and this video helped me a ton.
First -- omg I would like to thank my Mother, my Father, my many Gods that looked over me, and of course Sir Liepe, and that Southern hemisphere advantage on this upload
it is crazy that I am in a deep Chris Cornell hole looking at his Poncier EP, his covers, live stuff and all the stuff that he was doing when he was just starting out and how that set the stage for his solo career and all the things that he did later on and you release this! Thank you!! You have won me over, you will soon be taking my money. Lol. something that I caught from one of his interviews that he said when it came to being able to belt out the high notes that he was during his first albums in particular in the way he would sing in those albums he said that he found the way to squeeze and he realized that he could keep squeezing and squeezing and the no got higher and higher.
RIGHT! I remember that interview! It's he SQUEEZE!!! Mixed Voice SQUEEZE... False cord area engagement... compression!! But he was a master like none other and making it sound otherworldly. That interview was covered in the new unauthorized bio of him. GREAT read btw :)

He's telling me that he loves the way you teach, because he doesn't need to speak English to learn from you. We watched other videos like Axl Rose one. He really enjoyed it. So, he's going to follow you. He wants to watch more videos. Hahaha. You're the best, mate!
This is brilliant Chris. So great to hear one of my vocal heroes like that. Thanks for doing this. Your videos are really helping me get back into my singing again after a break and some vocal issues due to acid reflux! Really inspiring stuff. Thank you.
Chris, It's amazing what these tracks can instill in our own voices, that filter into other songs. I happen to really like his pop recordings he made like "Long gone" when Timbaland was trying to get him to reach a wider mainstream audience.
One important lesson from this video: it's crazy how much double tracking makes the difference between "some guy singing nice" and "wow, sounds like the original". I though I knew this but I discovered just how much closer the sound gets when trying to record the chorus to Would? recently. Brilliant idea to demonstrate this here.
Great choices but would rather see something else 🤔 maybe Bleed the Freak, Real Thing, Junkhead, Down in a Hole maybe lol. Would like to see something besides the obvious hit songs
Thanks for this! Great breakdown! I REALLY hope you can get the same for Fell on Black Days!! That track for me is so vocally rich and goes through so much of his range, would be fantastic to hear
Chris THANK YOU THAT SONG IS PERFECT FOR ME TO PRACTICE ALL TUTORIALS AND BUILD UP my voice healthy and learning to breath its a slow song and fits my voice to be comfortable not stressed YOU ARE SO GOOD!!!!🌈
wow. Wow. I never questioned my obsession with Cornell's vocals, now it just gets worse. Thank you Chris! And as a personal sign from the Universe my "like" was number 969. Good number i think. Liepe ROCKS!!!!
this is so awesome! I saw an interview with Michael Beinhorn he talks about the recording techniques. he said that all "doubles" are just stock from other test recordings, so not on purpose.
This is so good, Chris! I have so much I want to say, but I'll start with a simple thank you My path took me to audio engineering, and I'll say the sounds between the singing, are very familiar to me. One thing you can hear is the echo of the sound of the engineer physically punching in (hitting "record" as the song is playing, to get a precise entry point). A lot of engineers at that point, still chose to punch in manually (it's not inconceivable that Chris could even punch himself in), and what we hear, is literally the echo in the room, of the clicking of the button that punched them in. Same thing with the chair squeaking, if the engineer sifted in one of those perpetually squeaky studio chairs, during the recording, that sound can seem like the mic is right up to the chair, if there's any compression happening on the mic signal path (even to tape). I don't want to go into it, but I was an acquaintance/friend of Chris, since the 80's, so beyond all of the musical insight, it's nice to hear him like this, the stems being so revealing. I love your breakdowns of Chris' approach, and the respect he is given by others, even to this day. I have had the fortune of circumstance to know and be friends with a number of incredibly skilled and talented musicians - but even back in the Screaming Life time, I think pretty much everyone knew that Soundgarden - Chris in particular, but seriously ALL of them, were next level kind of talented. By Louder than Love, we thought they "arrived", but wow, how far they would go. Thanks again, Chris, and as with your other videos, such an exceptional breakdown of what is going on, insight into the process behind his singing, and connecting the dots for people. His singing got to that level just by him constantly pushing his boundaries of what he thought he was capable of, and learned more about what worked for his voice, and pushed himself further. People often miss that it was a journey for Chris, and as someone like you who has taken a close look at his skills and music, he would always do something different or new, or reinvent the wheel in a new way. Once again, great job.
30:55 'Sounds like a chair creaking' that actually was a creaking chair. Chris Cornell recorded his vocals sitting down (during this session anyway). Warren Huart did an interview with Michael Beinhorn while going through this session. There were so many crazy anekdotes about this session. By the way, as far as I know there was no de-esser on Chris' vocals. Chris Cornell had AMAZING sibilance control. It's part of his signature singing style. It's something I've been experimenting with myself. Closing my lips a bit more and relaxing them, pulling back my tongue to reduce sibilance etc. It works really well. It's worth trying this stuff out.
@@chrisliepe Yeah, it's what worked best for him. It was good of studio engineers to realize this and just let him do his thing. By the way, the distorted sounding vocals in the original were made by using a cheaper mic plugged into a PA system that would normally be used in a practice space. It was cranked to death and then they recorded what came out of those speakers. That's not as crazy as the fact that Chris' voice was so incredibly loud that he broke FIVE Neumann U87s during the recordings of this album :P That's a detail I find both painful and impressive.
...amazing job again.! The way you walk trough "him" get myself misty-eyed (i don't know if it's correct...). The details about the "breathe" or the noise of a chain!!!! Thank Chris, from the heart. LoudLove.
