Accents play a huge part of how singers sound too, even just from towns to towns in the same country can sound so different. It’s amazing what goes into how people sound when they sing. I love this channel
If you try to follow along with Chris here it becomes a full own vocal practice. Many things to implement in one's voice (or at least try to). Great work, as always. Thank you for the inspiration!
Damn! I absolutely fell in love with this guy. Yes, with Freddie too ;) This is by far the best vocal analysing I've *ever* seen and I subscribed to many channels like this, but Chris absolutely nails it! What a talent
Great vid as always. Loved your point about slowing it down, very astute. You talk about vocal gymnastics, and from my limited time in physical gymnastics, learning new maneuvers was similar. It was about breaking down big moves into smaller, more achievable movements, and then putting the chain together at the end. My singing has improved so much from taking these generous teaching tidbits of yours and playing around with them, thank you
Great “slow down” recommendation at the 12:50 mark. I find it hard to “learn” Freddie if I always try to match his tempo. Putting more effort into each word and note, and avoiding shortcuts just to go fast, helps me get the feel of the more difficult notes. The exercises in your courses promote that too. The difficult ones are the most rewarding. Thanks for this very useful breakdown video.
Really enjoyed this one thanks Chris think some video's on recording and production could be another avenue for you to explore thanks again for a great video
What a fabulous end to 2020! Please do more, love to hear isolated tracks anyway and your analysis is a huge plus. I love how detailed you are in getting into the minutiae of a singer's craft. For me, there is no greater craft than Freddie. (Though Geoff Tate knocks me out every time too!)
I love the video! Tomorrow I'll try to sing it with my younger sister (she loves Queen) I'd like to send you the result to you (I don't know yet if it will be video or only audio. Love the video and you enjoying it. Please do a breakdown to James voice change to Outlaw Torn; Studio vs S&M1 vs S&M2. There are some isolated vocal tracks from both S&M concerts
You nailed these sounds! Is there at a resource for iso vocal stems anywhere so I can try the same? Not necessarily for Mercury but for Cornell/ Buckley etc
Roger Taylor is a cool backing vocalist, but not a lead singer. Yes, he has very high notes, but that's probably all. The group with vocalist Roger Taylor did not become legendary, no matter what high notes he played there.
Great idea! I usually use a mild ratio on the way in, but I also use a limiter circuit before I hit the DAW. I do this with my Manley Core preamp. Then, I do what you saw me do in the video.
I agree you need to compress to reduce the dynamic range of your input, but I personally use multiple different send channels for different vocal parts of the song (one channel for chorus, one for verses, for example), whilst keeping my in channel completely dry. This way I can hear effects in my ears when I'm recording, but am still recording a dry signal which I can route to different channels at any time
you know who I think you'll enjoy, Noah Sebastian. he's got such a good dynamic and he can switch between heavy and harsh vocals, to soft spoken and a light voice fast. definitely recommend him for a "How To..." video
Ah man can you do Bert Mcracken from the used , i've been practising singing along to the first album and I'd really love to see you're take on how he breaks his voice with such precission and how far he takes it :)
Hey Chris. I'm a new subscriber and although I'm nowhere near at the right skill set to use most of your information and tips yet, it would be really awesome if you could go over David Draiman's vocals from the band Disturbed. Disturbed is by far one of my favorite bands and his voice is extremely iconic in my opinion. Would be great if you could dive a little deeper into his technique's
Hey Chris you should do a vocal breakdown or a “how to sing like” Matt heafy of trivium or Justin Bonitz from tallah they are my favorite vocalists right now and I’d love to see your take/thoughts on them. Happy new year as well!!
At 8:16 that's the sound of an aborted tape punch. The record head literally stops as it is starting. They basically missed the punch mark and stopped it just as it was beginning to overwrite the tape. Later, they obviously removed the rest of the word ''repeating'' from ''repeating to the sound of the beat''. Why they didn't fill that word back in? Well, think about what happens in such a situation - they had to listen back several times to get in rhythm with where the transients of the syllables are. During that process, listening back 2 or 3 times Freddie likely said ''Hey, it works that way. Leave it, I like it'' due to the interplay with the instrumentation. The word repeating is 3 syllables, there's no good way to cram a triplet into that space that allows the straight 8th notes of ''to the sound of the beat'', which are all 1 syllable words, to sound like a funky rap. Even ''Rip'n'' would have been too busy, better to just leave the space and keep the feel of a slap bass player dropping a note an 8th after a kick drum hit. Think about a straight 4 drum beat - dat oom dat mmm, dat oom dat mmm, better to drop the first oom than try making it a oom oom. I totally think that was Freddie's decision because of how he was as a pianist. Remember, those choppy backing guitar chords in Bohemian Rhapsody were NOT Brian May's, Freddie wrote those and they are rhythmically choppy AF for a reason.
Hey Chris! I’ve been working on trying to get mix voice and I’ve a real quick question! When doing the Robert plant thing with fry and I go up, am I supposed to feel like it’s head voice? Like a transfer of resonances, I’ve been sort of getting it but idk if I’m doing it right, I hope u see this lol
Great job! You do a great job of analysing singers and songs! Great improv there. Far better then Ken Tamplin. You should check kout one Freddie's Impromptus he did them every night, Rock In Rio Blues 1985ruclips.net/video/W7sNNIxqitA/видео.html. You might want to check out Don't Stop Me Now on multi track, there is one or two surprises there! Another difficult Queen song is One Year Of Love or Don't Try So Hard.
@@bluebell3720 The funky clean-ish part is John Deacon. The overdriven guitars (what few there are) are Brian May. Subject to verification by John Deacon or Brian May of course :) The song "Cool Cat" from "Hot Space" is all John Deacon on guitars and bass as well, if I'm not mistaken.
@@chrisliepe I knew it had to be that way!!! Cause I use some hermetic-completely isolated headphones and I struggle a lot... Love to see the excitement and curiosity on Chris's face as if he's a child unwrapping a present or playing with a new toy :)
Thank you Chris for an insight into Mercury's techniques.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you Chris! That was amazing! You have a way with the way you present, explain and demonstrate what you are sharing. That's priceless.
Thank you!

Chris, FYI, found a guy that has a bunch of Kansas' isolated vocal tracks. Amazing! Sorry to digress. Love these analyses BTW!

You’re welcome!
Awesome Chris!!! Love these breakdowns your doing along with daw settings. Really helps us newbies to learn how these things all work together.

Chris, on some of these high notes, I believe we're hearing Roger Taylor's vocals. Live, Roger was many times the high vocals.
Live definitely! All sounds like a Freddie in the studio?
Roger was definitely the super high rock singer

That one dislike was Thanos
