    Through all your videos I've learned that a lot of the most well-known singers tend to do a lot of things people usually tell you isn't "desirable" when singing, like being nasal and making "ugly" sounds, like the crow voice you mentioned here. You're the only vocal coach I trust because your not afraid of these things

    Freddie was a very dynamic singer, he used a lot of different colours and textures within his voice. He almost never, just sang a phrase, he usually added something to it. He was fantastic at interpreting music. The dynamic use of his voice along with his interpretation for music, tone and the power in his voice are the reason he is the best. There are thousands of singers who can hit good high or low notes, hitting a note does not make you a great singer. The way in which you interpret your music and your emotional expression are what makes you a truly great singer. I would have liked to see songs from the 80's as well, because Freddie changed his style from the 70's to the 80's and he changed again in the 90's.

    The thing with Freddie and his dynamic in his voice will be harder for some people to reproduce is because Freddie was all about feeling and delivery of the song. He didn't really think about technique. First learn the notes light, after you can hit them easily give your full emotion to the song, which is musicality what not everybody has.

    The crow sound absolutely worked for me with a little expermentation. Kinda had a breakthrough yesterday when doing this is the car on the way to work. I got into "crow" voice and pushed as much air as I could, producing a very loud, pure and crisp note that I wasn't able to hit before. Watch this guys videos! He really knows his stuff AND how to explain it to you in a way you'll understand. Best vocal coach on RUclips, hands down.

    Chris,
    your Free Voice Lessons were incredibly awesome and I had a lot of fun watching you and trying these exercises.
    I´ve had singing lessons in prep for a lead role in a musical production our school did over the course of the last year.
    The shows went great and I was able to hit a bunch of f4s on stage pretty easily, but I found myself struggling with said pitches ever after. However...
    At the end of the 3rd video of your FREE COURSE I was singing f#4s with ease. You even got some g4s out of me before my passagio kicked in. lol
    But those were EASILY THE BEST ONLINE SINGING lessons I´ve had so far.
    Thank you soooo much!
    Greetings from Germany \m/

    I must thank you. Im a 52yo former singer who lost my voice age 30. I began seriously practicing a month ago for the first time since then. I have discovered that 22yrs of bad choices has rendered my voice unrecognizable. I am so grateful to have stumbled upon your instruction, you're very relatable and your voice floors me. I'm discovering for every skill lost, there has been an unfamiliar skill gained. In 2 weeks I've made real progress. And you don't charge for this instruction?!? I am a fan.

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  5 лет назад +27

      Well, Freddie does this on some of the examples I’m using in this video so it’s probably more pronounced than usual, but when I’m practicing I do this consciously to ground my voice in my chest resonance. It’s kinda like working a muscle in it’s full range of motion. Keeps things flexible and well oiled. :)

    • @Rosannasfriend
      @Rosannasfriend 4 года назад +2

      Well, when you're singing, there's a lot of tension put on your rib cage, and you're letting the air out very slowly. That's how Support is done., Especially when you're singing very intense notes like a belting or whatever. So when you're finished, all that tension gets her released , and that's the result. It comes out all at once. All the air that you were holding back so you could push it out gradually against your vocal cords.

  • @KentStJohn-vn6bq
    @KentStJohn-vn6bq 5 лет назад +4

    I’m a lifelong, diehard Queen fan. Freddie’s voice is pure power. It’s like he didn’t know what to do with it half the time. It was just so aggressive and dynamic. Brian May said when Freddie would double his vocals, he would sing so perfectly in tune with himself that he would phase the dub out. So he would have to purposely sing slightly out of tune to keep that doubled effect. Crazy. On another note, listen to Freddie’s voice gradually become damaged over the course of their albums. When you get towards the end, his compressed head voice vocals are much more obvious than his early years when he could still belt higher notes. This is super apparent in their live at Wembley album where he sang completely different notes to stay away from the higher register.

    • @KentStJohn-vn6bq
      @KentStJohn-vn6bq 5 лет назад

      Didn’t know that about the smoking, but who’s to say he wasn’t doing more of this compressed falsetto on some of those tracks? Especially Hitman. I always attributed his damage and limited range from strain, not smoking, but maybe it was a combination of both.

    • @ZENOBlAmusic
      @ZENOBlAmusic 4 года назад

      Wembley is bad example he was sick at that show, he was sick and did 2 conceptive shows. Queen 1986 Magic tour was actually very good. Your voice changes over time, and especially male voices. People think because Freddie's voice had that light and youth sound in the 70's that he was singing very high, he wasn't really that high. His voice was just high pitched. His vocal range improved in the 80's. He voice gained a lot more weight and power. That not vocal damage. Queen's style also changed, they did a lot stadiums in the 80's. It is difficult to even hear yourself on such a large stage, and when you running all around the stage. Freddie preferred more chest voice belting. He could belt higher chest notes during this time in the 70's.
      In the 90's he was dying, his voice lost some of it's power, but he recorded his highest chest notes just before death. Freddie is one of the few singers who never lost any range in his voice, despite the fact that his voice became far more heavier. He went from a lyric tenor to a dramatic tenor.

    I think these tips are for advanced singer, who have a good foundation already, because if you haven't it's easy to damage your voice and health trying to make that "crow" voice and other things. For example, I often go falcetto before in some of his parts, when originally there was more powerful mixed voice, because i was affraid to singing these higher parts based on chest voice. So main tip for singing Freddie's songs is to have a strong chest main voice and if you're unstable in that, then you are in trouble and it is better to not trying his tricks without a good foundation.

    I think The Show Must Go On would be a great vocal study.
    Or maybe the phrasing of Kind of Magic would be less haunted to look at!

    Nice. I'm going to make Freddie covers of popular songs now while wearing a Tim Burton outfit and rocking the "banana tree" wig.
    Also, 18:22 made me tear up... Definitely rare for a sort of expressionless nerd like me. That hurt in all the right ways.

    Imagine after you die, as you're passing through the Gates of Heaven, this band is playing the song of your life:
    Drums - John Bonham (Led Zeppelin)
    Bass/Back Vocals - Roger Waters (Pink Floyd)
    Keyboards - Keith Emerson (Emerson, Lake & Palmer)
    Rhythm guitar - Angus Young (AC/DC)
    Lead guitar - Jimi Hendrix (The Jimi Hendrix Experience)
    Lead vocals - Freddie Mercury (Queen)

    Chris, thanks for your work!. Great teacher. Also please, comment on head resonance specifically when it comes to Marc Martel! His head is 2x the size of yours. And I know Freddie boasted similar head anatomy advantages. I know the obvious answer, but maybe you have additional insight. I personally have a pumpkin (aka movie star grande cabeza), and I feel the good vibrations. Thanks!

    Amazing video! Breaking down Freddie's technique is very eye/ear opening! These examples were all from the 70s, presumably on purpose. Freddie's voice changed a lot from 1983 on. It darkened, had more grit, and - in my mind - lost most of its agility and sensitivity that was his trademark throughout the 70s. The 70s and 80s Freddie voices sound almost like two different people to me. Even his compositions were a lot different in the 80s - more mainstream, lesser experimental, lesser innovative, lesser sensitive. However, on his last album in 1991 he regained some of his 70s sound and musicality.
    What are your thoughts about Freddie's 80s voice? I don't think it was purely a stylistic choice but caused by damage to his vocal chords. What do you think?
