Thanks Warren! After more then 30 years doing music, I still have a lot to learn about mixing but what I always do on my clients/friends mix is to try to understand where they want to go with the song before I start messing around with it. Using reference tracks but also by talking about influences and favorite band so I can get in the mood and maybe find something that will make this song special. I just downloaded the Multi tracks, that will be fun to play around with during my Christmas Vacation. Stay safe, have a Great time with your Family and I Hope you get well soon :)
Fabfilter ProQ 3 and Lindell 80 Channel on every track. SSL Buss compressor, Bax EQ and Oxford Limiter on Master bus. No topdown mixing except Bus Comp on from start. VU meters first in chain on all the Group buses and Master Bus. I never clip "over" channels or groups but I push up to 3-4 db into Master Bus (groups controlled by VCA). That's my "analogue" hack and workflow- simple and old school. Then I use my imagination to make believe I'm on a console! :)
Ohhhhhhh… this is sooooooo bloody brilliant! Love these series! Love the attitude! The reverence and professionalism with which you all are treating Queen’s music and, at the same time, the respect you have for each others talent and skills! No wonder these videos are brilliant! Keeping great music alive one song at a time! What a great collaboration! Impatiently awaiting for the future installments! Don’t make us beg for too long, Warren!
Tony Franklin! How awesome is that!! I thought it would be fun to mix someone else's stuff for a change, but Tony Franklin? What an unexpected treat. Been a huge fan of his music from the moment I first discovered him in the mid-80's.
Dude excellent work on the vocals! The backing vocals are very nice! The whole band is awesome, but it's really impressive how the singer sounds exactly like Mercury!
I just read a two year old comment on another video alleging that Marc could not sing Another one bites the Dust. Safe to say that the person saying this has no idea what they’re talking about because this was brilliant!
I saw Marc Martel perform a couple of years ago and it was amazing. You guys nailed those tracks. And it's very cool for you guys to make the tracks available to mix. 😊
Excellent job, you guys! This video isn't just informational and instructional, it's just plain fun. In my humble opinion, Freddie Mercury is absolutely, positively, without a doubt the greatest rock singer to have ever lived. Robert Plant isn't too shabby either, mind you. And there are far too many honorable mentions to mention them all, so I'm not even going to try 😄. I've always enjoyed Marc Martel. He's awesomeness in human form.
People aren't realizing that the point of this cover wasn't to exactly copy every breath, hz or comp of the original track. This was a great study into not only the history, but also the production of Queen. So someone saying that either the drums need to sound more dead or that the vocal is too distorted, is missing the point of the video. Awesome job to everyone who participated in making this. As someone who has been introduced to the greats much later in life, this was amazing to see!
That was really amazing! Honestly I could never understand why Queen was not recording at least 1 album with Marc Martel. I think the fans had loved it. Are we allowed to call you "Roger" from now on? :) Thanks a lot for sharing all your knowledge with us and most important get well soon Warren.
That was one hell of a super great cover! Musicians are super pros! Everything sounds incredibly amazing! Huge fan of Queen here too! Wonderful video! And thank you so much for the multitracks! Get Well Warren! You Super Duper Rock! 😀👍🔥🔥🔥
Loved this! Take care of that arm! Love you're staging of eq and comp elements! Incredible musicianship on display here! Even as a "Gimp" you never disappoint. I walked away even more emboldened, looking over your shoulder!
Brilliant! After the previous video on Another One Bites the Dust and its impact on music, I was hoping for at least a cursory breakdown of the mix. Instead we get a full on reconstruction from scratch, with a detailed look at the anatomy of a song/mix by way of a cover! Thank you so much for this! ❤
This was me too! I really enjoyed watching yesterday's video on Queen's AOBTD, and this full break down analysis through replicating and reconstruction is icing on the cake!
Amazing performance. Mark sounds very close to Freddie. I've also seen in interviews that Freddie worked a lot on the vocals for that one to get it the way he wanted and didn't recreate it live so that is even more impressive if that was one take.
Marc does a very close to album rendition in each of his hundreds of concerts. At this point, he could almost do these songs in his sleep. Vocal muscle memory.
Warren, those last two videos were gold dust, thoroughly entertained and educated, thank you. Keep up the ace work amigo. Big Love from the Med...Philip, a Mancunian iliving in Mallorca. Small studio, big intentions.
despite Marc being quite famous for singing Mercury stuff, he could easily also do Falco. As he's quite the lookalike he will sound very similar. I think I even spotted some Falco attitude during his performance.
Wow holey crap the vocalist is the best proformer iv seen on this channel bar non that's not to say there's not been tons of talented people. But shit this guy was amazing
After colour-coding each instrument and adding busses for each instrument I zero all tracks and start with mixing the drum tracks. Then blend in bass, guitars, keys, synths and vocals/backing Vs. Once happy with an initial mix I add whatever plugins are required to blend even more ... and so on and so on. PS Would it be ok to add this to a port-folio?
In playing with the tracks I found that some of the Guitar FX leading to the end of the song were missing or doubled up. Other then that these are amazing multitracks and an amazing cover! It was a blast getting to play with these as I usually only try to mix metal but I'm a long time queen fan. Thank you!
Excellent video again! Here's a question for you..about the two bass dublicates. I noticed that the second with the HPF has a slightly lower volume than the first. Is there a rule that you keep or according to taste? Thanks again ! Get well soon!!!
Embarrassed to admit I've not heard of Marc Martel until this video. Shame on me! He's got a killer voice, uncanny... not a note tuned as you say Warren?!! Loved the shout out to Fil of Wings of Pegasus! Have to mention the bass too, wicked.Great video. Hope you're getting better every day.✌️
about that groove it is very true, lots of drummers have problems with. I think it is because they don´t play it that often... Btw Ringo was great at playing it, he was using it a lot live :)
Hi Warren, I'm following you since a long time and I'm meditating to try mixing these multitracks (what tracks and what a song!) for the first time. Would you suggest to "copy" your mix or try to experiment with different parameters or - an example - making that funky guitar wider with various panned layers with some subtle pitch shifting? Thank you and hope your arm is healing marvellously well :-)
Hi Warren, Thanks so much for the MultiTracks! Quick question - How did you guys do the reverse piano riser? I couldn't find it in the tracks - It's such a great cover though - many thanks!
