We sent Neil, Blake and Doddy to the Forest of Dean with their cheap bikes to find out. It’s nearly Christmas and we wanted to find out just how much bike you can buy for £100. (Although we suspect that Blake spent far more than that)

Get three identical frames, and the same amount of money each to spend on building the bike out from used / cheap parts.
GMBN you have to do this
Vivian Mason kkkmkmkkkkk j
DH Adelaide k
luke cooper ugcsfdburctfvubcewnfuieufni ebukl hiuouh ifreoxf
Please do this! Such a good idea
Top Gear Bike Edition
I’m not a noob exactly what I was thinking
Haha yeh definitely! More stuff like this please GMBN!
That's exactly what we're all probably thinking 😂
My thoughts exactly
top gear is dead though this version is defos better :)
8:10 If I was walking through the woods and heard that i would probably have assumed it was a drunk leprechaun getting lucky
😂😂😂😂😂
Hahahhahahahahha
More like Michael Jackson on cocaine
What do you mean by “getting lucky”?
Staiby Baby Finding his life fortune 😳
Can we appreciate how hard Neil went on that fully rigid bike
Yes because I have a very similar mountain bike about as old and I have no intention of flying over a ramp to land below.
People do that on bmx all the time.
He had no choice😆
@@KandiKlover no we don't. BMX is lighter, better balanced and handles far better. Neil has bollocks of steel riding that old thing.
When I was a kid that's all we had , we still jumped them , just not like that . My wrists still kinda hurt just thinking about it
4:51 "Two fingers weren't effective... I might have to go four fingers" Neil....
Anyone else read the "Neil" in Will's voice from Inbetweeners, after Neil's done something tragic
Blake's laugh in the downhill challenge is MANIC 😂
Best moment in the vid! :D
I agree and my laughter will never go DOWNHILL. HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Steffan Harries bahahah
More like nervous laughter knowing that if he messed up he might have a really bad day
“Time to get these beautiful beasts out onto the trail, and the bikes, too...” 6:41 😂
*Guy walks in with an envelope for the challenge*
Jeremy Clarkson: "What is this, a crossover episode?"
Part 2 suggestion: Spend 100£ on upgrading those bikes and do the same challenges again :D
Thekalllllllll amazing idea!!! Neil’s bike would make a really cool classic bike with functioning brakes
Or go crazy and stupid and go £1000s of upgrades as the budget. Although I think the peugeot might be a bit limited
The marin is easy enough, magura hs33 brakes running water, fox forks, fox rear shock, and update the wheels and get 9mm and 10mm axles on there.
Or have a professional racer on a $130 bike and one of them on a $3000 bike and race.
@@chusamusic1409 they're professional riders...
Follow on vid should be spend £100 on upgrades for each, followed by a game of BIKE
After that one, progress it again and see how "good" they can get the old girls performing! ;)
I think this would be a great video, that or build the best bike for £200
Yup good ideas. See what improvements they could make for another 100.
Yes, but Blake only get 70 since he was 30 over on the original purchase.
niel might be able to win… spend all his money on proper brakes and he'd be set
9:01 - best part of the video
Blake in the race: he protec
He attac
But most importantly he sounds like he on crac
Neil's pedals are more expensive than the bike, all of them nearly are 😂
18:24 "Did you give up because that bike is so ugly anyway" 😂- One of the best GMBN episodes so far! Including more of your personalities makes it so much more fun to watch
these videos are great because they make me realize that my low-end bike (Specialized Rockhopper) is not to blame in most cases. You can shred most bikes, it's just a matter of skill.
Yeahhhhh I got a bike worth 128$, so I think you still have the better bike lol
A very clear demonstration of how TopGear / TGT should do things. No forced banter, no planned 'mishaps' and genuine hysterics from the presenters ! Excellent Video. Top Marks
When your helmet is more expensive than your bike :D
same for the pedals
Knee pads too lol
safety is number one priority
@@HanSolo__ true
Can never be too safe when it comes to your head ... Other parts can heal better at least head is dead
How about...'how cheap can a pro go'... so for example Doddy or one of the guys sets a time on a decent route/ track on a modern top spec bike...then a pro racer tries the same track on progressively cheaper/crapier bikes until they cannot still beat the non-pro's time on the modern bike. Hence the segment name...good idea? Can be applied to all formats, dh, xc, trials, enduro/trail....so cud have a series of vids...
Rupert Wenn i like this
Cameron Loud same
So you mean to say they should put a star on a reasonably priced...bike?
I could be the rookie
The sponsors would never allow it.
Am I watching top gear?
Besides the lack of fat middle aged men, yes
Probably
8:55 LOL Blake and his stand up comedy skills. Brilliant.
You need to do more of these.
I got into mountain biking on a $80 steel 26" hardtail from Wal-Mart. Rode it til I broke it.
While they're definitely cheap and you get what you pay for, they're IMO the best option for someone unsure of whether they'll like biking or not.
Plus, the 26er had narrower tires than my 29er, a shorter gear range and less responsive suspension. Sounds terrible, but it definitely forces you learn good bike control on the trail.
sixstanger00 I started with pretty crappy trax tfs10 “mountain bike”
What broke on it?
@@johnhanley9946 Bottom bracket. One of the trails I ride has a log crossing. When I rolled over it, my chainring bottomed out on the log and broke the BB. It was only an $80 bike, so wasn't worth fixing. At that point my skills had exceeded what it was designed for, anyway. So I bit the bullet and upgraded - a Motobecane Fantom29 X4.
Best $500 I ever spent.
I bought it in 2017 and the bike is still amazing to this day. Already competed in 2 full XC seasons.
@@sixstanger00 Do you mean the frame broke, like the bottom bracket shell?
@@johnhanley9946 No, just the bottom bracket itself. The frame was steel and the bike weighed a plump 39 lbs. A tank. After the incident, the bike was "ride-able" enough to get me back to the car, but the crank assembly wobbled because of the broken BB.
8:10 the sound of a maniac laughing
I love how top gear/ grand tour ish this is
Samee
Top gear challenges will be the future of this channel
Owen Genrich it’s gonna be sick 🔥
That's exactly what I thought dude!
Yeah! make more videos about cheap bikes
Blake makes GMBN so entertaining, he’s hilarious
It's like the producers saw an episode of Top Gear, and decided to do the mountain bike version. Very cool. Thanks.
Fix the brakes on that Peugeot and it is by far the coolest there, would love to see it mounted on the top of a 205 GTi.
Neil will just have to get a 205 GTI to match it then
Top gear for bikes!!!! I'm in LOVE 😍
Some say their favourite flower is the potato, and that even though they've seen Fifty Shades of Grey they still thinks BDSM is a driving school. All we know is they'er called GMBN.
Patrick Steinmark lol some say... they copied top gear!! I'm not gonna complain though
@@josiahkaczmarek3409Just a wee bit lol
I know right!
Do you have something with poland?
Your surname is from poland
8:56 I freakin' lost it. Hahaha!
More of cheap mountainbike testing like that! 😁👍👍👍
I feel so sad for all the riders these days that didn't come up on OG bikes. I know I would have progressed sooo much faster and with hundreds of less injuries had I only ever rode modern bikes but, as you guys know, the total exhilaration that those old bikes provide from very modest trails is amazing. It's the ole chicken or egg question, there was no need for bike-parks when a simple walking trail could make you crap your pants, but there would be no need for amazing bikes if we still had nowhere to use them properly. love this vid, such fun!
Still running a `98 Proflex Beast. Only upgrade is new wheels , rest still factory standard :)
Life before aluminum frames, suspension of any kind, V-Brakes, 20+ speeds, and remember elliptical chain rings? It was glorious!
Love the good old 4 finger brake technique from Neil!!! What a classic😂😂😂
"Your stem is longer than your bars are wide"
Love this format ... more please with a slightly larger budget (£250) and perhaps an upgrade section for a specific task with money they didn’t spend from the original budget!
Next time have 250£ budject.
*budget
*budject*
That’s 30 pounds less than what my XC bike from treck cost
and after that do like a 600& bikes for us noobies
Ahhhhh, Top Gear anyone.....
Me
Or.....The Grand Tour
yup
I love it! I see that you inspired yourselves from the good ol' Top Gear! How every one arrives separately and presents their car (in this case, bikes) the guy in a white vest (a Black jacket here).... Absolute brilliant!
This reminds me of the 'Golden Age' of Top Gear! Brings back so many memories, great work guys!
Without mentioning the similarity to 3 other "pillocks" and their show, I'm loving the correlation and hope to see more, longer feature videos like this involving the presenters!
We saw a similar bike to Blake’s in the bike vault recently! Suspicious😂
Absolutely epic video, big thumbs up from me, impressed with the talent to be able to even ride these bikes half decently!! The fun you were having was so obvious and made the video go from epic to absolutely epic. Nice one GMBN.
8:11 blake can do golum impressions from the hobbit
Doddy looks positively silly on that tiny (for his height) bike lol
Also, I have a '92 Giant Rincon (updated a bit) as my commuter bike, similar to that Peugeot - it's fantastic for it!
You guy should do a one hour weekly show, which would include the Dirt Shed Show contents, some fails and bails, techs, hacks and bodges, with some challenges, while talking about the news of mountain biking, all with the usual humor of your presenters. A kind of Top Gear or The Grand tour, but bike related. And why not, I mountain biking star on a reasonably priced bike on a small circuit... I already imagine Martyn as the main host ... a sure hit for you :)
Yeah this would be great!
Great idea 🚲🚲
That would be awesome
Sounds like an great idea! - i wanna see Rachel Atherton beat Annika Langvad! (if she can... :) ).....you guys could make it happen!
This would be a dream!! Make it happen GMBN pleeaase!
I wanna see Blake’s bike upgraded as much as you can. Or upgrade it part by part in a series. It will make great funny content to see how good it can get. Maybe the other bikes too
How good can a 90's marin get because I had an 05 East Peak and it was bloody good after I'd fitted MT Trail brakes, Neutron bars and a Defy 35 stem.
8:54 is the funniest and best argument against gripshifts
Should have done a bunnyhop height test
I love gmbn
Blake's maniacal laughter is a split between the Joker off of the Batman animated series, Woody Woodpecker, and Wesley Snipes in Demolition Man with a fist full of A.D.D.: "RUN TOM, DONT FALL! .... beavers been here, h'ate that tree....."
I think the amount of views speaks for itself. We all enjoy budget bikes/ builds competitions between GMBN presenters. I think a budget downhill bike competition would be pretty sick.
Funniest GMBN video, maybe ever! Everyone was awesome. Thanks for putting life and limb on the line for this one. It's fun to see (and laugh at) these rigs on Rewind; it's even better when we see what riding them is like compared to modern steeds. Doddy riding with those narrow bars was hilarious looking!! Funny what was "normal" BITD!
You should do a £500/£750/£1000 episode, because those are more realistic budgets. Good video, well done. 🤙🤙
I found the joy of atb'ing (no mountains here) again quite recently with a '96 Peugeot Energy 300 frame (10€) that I build with some resurrected wheels, 3x9 Deore LX and old Marzocchi fork that I got laying around. The frame is massive and the stem is loong, but it still gave me the best thrills yet!
Then I put together an old Fausto Coppi frame (cost me a pack of coffee), that was probably a budget bike back in the day ('94 or so). That also has a big frame but with wider fat flatbar, short stem & quill adapter and 0 setback seatpost it fits and feels nice, especially with ghetto tubeless (2.55" back, 2.1" front).
After that I got a '96 Mongoose Crocadile SX for 35€ in fully original spec. I haven't customized it yet, but it needs a shorter stem and wider bars. Frame should be sized quite right but the 175mm cranks and the 120mm stem are a bit too much for me. Also the Rock Shox Quadra 21R would maybe make a good wall item, I'd like to spare it from hard riding.
Then I found another Peugeot, a '98 Origin 20 XS (25€). It is the best fitting of them all and I fitted it with a quill adapter and a wider bar, but the stem was just changed to a retro Zanzi stem. It needed about 15-20€ extra to get it running good. Too bad the chain snapped and took the front derailleur with it.
Many 90's low to mid tier MTB's are selling here in Finland for like 10-50€ for a quite decent chromoly one. You could find something like STX-RC or Deore LX groups or even better if you're lucky. The bikes listed, I've built in the last 3 months :D Only the Coppi frame I had since summer.
They make a real nice little projects, but I see the risk of getting too many in the long run. :) Finding them from the market sites with some terrible pictures and bad spelling is one part of the challenge. Gladly, there is quite much pics and info's around the web, especially if the bike has gained even a mild appreciation over the years.
26" is not dead!
Blake's energy is something else.
"Run Tom! Don't fall! Beavers been here; ate that tree. Look at the sun!"
😂😂
When the pedals cots more than the whole bike😂
These are BY FAR my favorite videos you put out. Huge thanks to you guys, glad you had fun and thanks for this! Watching Doddy walk over those logs was priceless lol.
Should do a year specific one for the next video. Or like a 5 year one, say 2006-2011. Quite a lot of changes through those years. £150 this time?
9:00 i laughed so hard that water came out of my eyes😂😂
This is one of my fave GMBN vids ever, more like this! Reminded me of classic TopGear, well done!
Doddy Clarkson , Neil May and Blake Hammond... That was awesome...🔥🔥 🤣🤣🤘🤘👍👍
Heizenblade Neil Clarkson Doddy may blake Hammond
You guys are really inspiring and get me out on my local trails
Keep uploading
Whenever I'm stressed with my riding, I came back to watch this just for the fun of it! U guys rock! Please do more of this retro bike challenge!
Blake's grin at 6:50 and also that insane cackling~
Please can you set a budget and upgrade each of the bikes, then have another set of challenges! Or just take the Marin, upgrade it on the Tech channel, then maybe have a giveaway. I think that would be awesome!
I love it. Glad it was 30 minutes too and not 10. Made it so you could do the challenge justice. Rad.
15:17 😂🤣 chaîne breaking :
- Well, i'm not pedaling that
- Oh that's quite nice actually
23:47 the laugh 😂
Love it been waiting for another one of these 👌🏻 not everyone has a lot of money lol
I LOVE THIS... THIS IS ENTERTIANMENT
Remember back in the day when we didn't know better?
When I was a kid a bike was a bike.
Crappy or nice.
But we rode the trails regardless.
I love this format of competition, I’d love for you guys to do more
One of my fav videos so far, you should do more retro bike challenges,. Loved seeing skills put to the test on old school bikes, though I feel Blake must have sweetened the deal with something else to get his ride for $100 ;)
Great video, looking forward to more presenter challenges 👍
It's like watching a mountain bike version of Top Gear.
You guys cracked me up! Best video yet of all of you together! I love to watch your videos. Haha
Loved the video! So much fun to watch (and I missed the hoopla about whatever premiere is). As always, I'm madly impressed with Neil's skills this time on a bike that clearly had no brakes. It only stopped in the first challenge when he basically crashed it. ;)
6:54 Who fart?😂
25:14
This video, and the judging, was excellent, and seemed fair. Good job, gents.
I am just trying to get into mountain bikes and I bought an early 2000’s Saracen bike for £90, few goodies on it just needed some new tires and some love and got to say it’s great getting back out, especially on a bike I don’t have to care about!
Early 2000's for £90 WTF...!!!. You paid more than the new price.
Looks like you had so much fun filming this, love it!
top gear vibes :-D love it
3 different personalities and they get on.
Love the cheap bike challenge, and the presenter challenges are always great regardless
Yea I agree and I love this. It’s like top gear with mtb’s this need to be a thing.
This was very fun to watch and I appreciate that it was a good long video, but GCN production levels are on a next level from this. Pull up your socks guys.
Love this, you guys should do more top gear style challenges like this
Yes! I've been waiting for something like this forever!
Great episode guys. The switching gears while turning had me rolling 🤣
Awesome episode! :D Loved it! For the editors tho, a flat picture profile needs some work to make it pop and make it even more enjoyable to watch :) But thank's guys! Love to watch more videos like this one in the future
its in the forest of dean!!!!! I cycle there!!!!! well at least the jumping part of the video is!!!!! not sure about the rest!!!!! love ur vids especially these ones!!!
Great job, pissed myself laughing!!
When Blake laughed at going down the hill...Balls of steel to laugh at death!
Wow old trio top gear is the first thing that came to mind and it was epic. Your personality put together is great.
Can’t wait for this to come out 👍🏼
Love blakes hysterical, I'm about to die, laughs
I love this idea, it’s like top gear, we need more challenges like this with the three presenters
2:55 is possibly The weirdest noise I’ve ever heard of human make😂😂😂😂😂
I love this I had to go watch top gear now
''Your stem is longer than your bars are wide'' Ahaha :D
Might be the best video yet. Top gear esque. Brilliant guys well done.
8:05 The best FART the world could ever hear.
