In 2008 I had returned to my home in California. I had recently gone through a divorce. So when I got home my very close neighbors were Filipinos. They were planning a family vacation to the Philippines and really wanted we to join them. I didn’t have any interest and had some financial things that needed attention because I had been out of the country for the past 4 years. My friends owned a home and farm property which has been in the family for generations. So after much pressure I weakened and off we go to the Philippines. That was my first time in the Philippines. Being with my friends made it so easy and also educated me on the do’s and don’t. We has a super time. We Traveled around Zambales seeing so many, many places. My friends and I returned returned to the US after 45 days. They went to work and I relocated to Tennessee because I also had a house there that my mother had lived in. Within 6 months I had all the financial things completed and I was off to the Philippines again. I was allowed to stay in my friends home and used that as my base. To rest up. I started island hopping and visiting people I met online. So for several years I would go to the Philippines and visit and travel for 4-6 months at a time. My friends who were still working were getting jealous! Haha
I know the Philippines isn’t perfect but that’s one of the attractive things about it. I love the simplicity, the affordability and the friendliness of just about everyone I’ve met.

Philippines is a great place as long as you're healthy. Weather is perfect, people are friendly, caring and kind, foods are deliciously unique, and there are alot of beautiful places to conquer. Politics and leaders are corrupt and it sucks, the reason the Philippines is such in disarray in socio-economic status. Medical service is not that bad, as long as you have money to pay, however it is not even compared to the western standards, therefore you have to keep your health in tip top shape. Most of the medical facilities will ask you to pay cash upfront first, before they can even see you. If you don't have the money, you will be dead even before you can be seen by a doctor or any medical practitioner. Your limited finances can go a long way in the Philippines, compared to any places in the world, especially the U.S.

I came down with Reactive Arthritis, an autoimmune where in a few weeks my feet swelled-up 3 shoe sizes and was to painful to walk, sleep, everything. After 5 years and desperate I heard the KETO diet would help. Was on meds with very little relief using canes at 59 on SSDI. Within 3 weeks was able to walk a few blocks, stopped all meds. All of my friend who have tried it, got relief as well, but they didn’t suffer from arthritis like I did and couldn’t stay on it.
Two months later, started building my daughters addition and could walk a few miles without pain. It’s a diet that eliminates many of the foods I love, but got rid of even the typical arthritis carpenters get in their hands as well. I went from a pain level of 10 to a 1 or 2. Good luck, will be returning next year. To Cavite

You are so crazy, medical treatment in the Philippines is very poor, every time I see a doctor or had surgery here it all goes bad, these doctors are not the brightest, if I had medical issues I'd go back to the USA where medical care is great, here you'll sit on a gurney in the emergency until you die.

    Cap,
You did good, retiring early! You're fortunate to have a real pension, as most Americans have only social security!
Even at 2/3rds of what your Social Security would have been, you're smart to draw as soon as possible. Fighting for SSD is the hardest thing I had to do, so I have a good idea what you went through. Fortunately, in my situation, much of my pain can be dealt with, once I am older(61 now), and less fat. I kneed both knees replaced, and that's a pretty successful procedure, with good outcome more often than not.

Yep. I sold everything. I was renting a batchelor apt in Canada for $1,000/month. Moved to Anilao and was renting a 2bedrom house by the ocean for $100/mo. On a pension, but not having to pay vehicle insurance, gas, repairs and high apt rent I now have money left at end of the month.

I'm recently retired, and considering a trip out to find a place to live and see how the islands feel.. and if it works out I too may relocate to the Philippines as well. On the subject of health, I am lucky I am still in much better health then most my age and even better then many half my age. That said, I wish I had a dime for everytime I warned someone over the years that their job would soon be their down fall health wise and I am rarely wrong about that., Many just do not take their health seriously until it is to late. These days I see so many young people that are easily over weight by many many times their healthy weight !

Cap I didn’t realize you were on SS Disability. I know your neck is destroyed from your job but thankfully SSDI pays the same as your FRA Benefit. I was in a very serious car accident caused by a heart attack when I retired early, then I got cancer and filed and was approved for SSDI. It made a huge difference. I have issues but here my SS is way more than enough. You look great and seem happy. I think it’s great. Enjoy your time here.

Yes, exactly James my exact same thoughts about foreigners. Our place is off the beaten path in Pampanga. I never see foreigners, unless we go to S&R or Wilcon. We love being introverted 😀. I've seen many changes in the 49 years of going back and forth.
    Very good educational discussion James.

GREAT blog fellows it's so good to see Capps again .James I'm really glad you did this interview with him .I thought he looked like he had lost some weight boy I need to also .Capps story sounds alot like mine I too worked long & hard around 40 years until I had health issues too & had to retire early as well . I'm so glad my house & property not that its a expensive place is paid for that's what helps keep me from struggling alot here. After watching yourself & Capps I think I'll check out ilo ilo before I decide where to settle I was looking at Mindanao (Davao area or Tagum city) or maybe even Dumagetti but I think I owe it to myself to look there before I decide especially now that I don't have filliphina ties to the Mindanao area .Capps sure looks happy there maybe I can find that same joy there as well .This interview just reinforced my intention to live there full time after I get well from this medical issue I'm dealing with .God Bless you guys & Thanks for the update fellows. 🙏

Absolutely check it out. It is a wonderful place. I think you would like it. Easy to get around big but not too big and has so much stuff including Cajun food at Southern Grind and two different Bourbon Streets. I say surely give it a look.

Thanks, James, for bringing Cap on board this evening. You guys did a great job / interview...... I too am looking forward to making that leap in the not-too-distant future. I will probably retire early as well. Say, the one thing I do need to start researching, maybe at some point you and Cap could chime in on this, is medical. Finding a good doc, hospital, dentist, ER, etc. How does medical insurance work? Just medical stuff......... Oh by the way James, if you and Mel wish to have the toilet in the shower area, that's fine with me, it's yours, right?..... But, I am a little aware of the culture, Christine's home in Bacolod is that way in both CR's. It does have many good points....... Have a good day Bro....take care.

Wise and Xoom are my go-to money transfer companies. Wise always has the best exchange rate, and while they do have a small fee, the good exchange rate always ends up sending money PHP than Xoom, which if sending more than $200 is no fee. Sounds like you figured it all out Cap. Welcome!

This is my first time catchin’ you. ‘ Always happy to see a person ” having piece of mind .” And it seem like your friend Cap may have found that. Contentment comes in many forms for many different types of people. As many people wish for a “ better, more ( or less ) fulfilling life “ some never put one foot in front of the other to take action to make it happen . Glad your friend is enjoying his life in Iloilo. I too will be there in about a month too try to “find my piece of mind” in another culture.

Enjoyed the interesting interview, James. Cap, I would say you made the correct choice in retiring early. Relax and do what makes you happy and content. If you get bored or lonely there is always plenty of nice Filipino's to associate your time with. Just choose your Filipino friends the same way a foreigner should vet his Filipina girlfriend/wife and will be just fine. You are now able to take life at your own pace. SSDI gives you more monthly income then had you taken early SS retirement, so that worked to your advantage.
