A great little chat with an Aussie legend discussing his first 6 months of living in Bali as a retiree.
I retired to Thailand loved it it was awesome but let me warn you before you sell everything thing where you live spend twelve months wherever you are going to stay , i ended up going back home i missed my family big time and my Aussie way of life. Australia aint that bad a place to retire. So now i go to Bali or Thailand for 3 to 4 months a year , i have the best of both worlds , thats just my opinion yours might be different.
That’s perfect if you can afford it. For me to return to Canada costs a fortune for flights and then a place to rent and a vehicle
The summer months would be great to come back to Canada but not n my budget.
I agree if your from Australia or New Zealand it's best to spend the winter in Thailand can't beat the summer down under 😊
That’s the realization I am coming to as well. I’m from the states and have been traveling around south east Asia looking for a place to retire. I have been coming to this region since 1998. I can confidently say that the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia are not on that list. I am back in Thailand now and getting to really like the place. This place can be hell if you are not good with money. In that there are so many cool places to spend your money that you will go broke if not careful.

Agree with the difficult.We recently renovated a house in village with $26k quote,we’re now out to nearly $40k and the pool needs to be demolished.The hardest part of living here is the trust that is so blind when your only visiting,disappear’s pretty quickly sadly.

Wow! Who’d have thought everything is in Indonesian in Indonesia!! But seriously, Bali is fast becoming a destination that is not as cheap as it once was. Rents are booming and good rentals in nice areas, close to good surfing beach’s (Take note surfy retirees), are scarce. Sure if you wanna live in remote areas, dont surf and youre ok to ride 30 minutes to popular places, restaurants, beach, etc then you can find something cheap and cheerful but the days of spending $20k AUD a year in a really good 2 bedroom villa with a pool is very very limited. Moving about the island is getting worse each year. If you go out between 4-6pm you will be spending a lot of time in traffic. Sunday afternoons can be even worse as every local loves going to the beach on their day off. Meat, not just chicken, is available but you wont find all the cuts you’re used to in Australia. Basically you’ll get tenderloin steaks / beef, shitty german style sausages kind of like frankfurts, cuts of pork, heaps of fish, prawns, scallops but its all farmed and imported from China. Or you can spend the same as what it costs in Aus and go to somewhere like the Meat Emporium in Umalas and get all the Aussie cuts but yeah it will cost you. Stick to the food markets for everything else and you’ll keep your costs down. Insurance will cost you too because you’ll be paying for travel insurance unless you get Kitas then you can get local cheap insurance. Anyone with a “visa” will eventually have to do visa runs and theres an extra 6 monthly cost to go to Singapore, KL or somewhere else close to Bali. Then you go through the whole re-registering your phone when you return, paying for visa extensions ($250 AUD every 60 days), and around and around you go! Its all tolerable because you are living the dream but not sure ppl realise all these thjngs and just think moving to Bali will be a walk in the park.

My wife family haw alot of land so i live free, like a local... im a little sick of bali, and think there's better places to retire,, if u are really rich bali gives u verry nice places to stay. But if not, ul be looking in a wall all day

@eatsurfsleeprepeat5485 This is so interesting to read . That said , I still do not understand why the Aussies leave their beautiful country to retire here or elsewhere . Geraldton, where Alan is from, is a nice place , and so is Margaret River , Bunbury , Busselton , Albany . Yes , Australia is very ,very expensive but it has very good facilities ! 😊
The only thing that bothered and concerned me was seeing elderly people walking to the hospital or grocery stores alone . 😔 But what did I love best about Australia ( during my 3 visits Down Under ) ? The different shades of blue , be it the sky or ocean, are a treat for sore eyes , their beef, and lamb meat . ☺️

I have just watched your channel, have never been to Bali not interested really. I dud find it strange that Alan at his age is on his own,left Australia with gold card benefits needs to pay for cataract surgery and could have had new dentures for free😢 whatever floats your boat I suppose. Not trying to be judgemental just wondering, no proper roads all that humidity 😒

I spent the first part of my honeymoon in Sanur back in the 80s, loved it. Banana pancakes or Nasi Goreng at this place on the beach for breakfast. Wet bar at the pool during the day. Then we drove up to Chandi Dasa, stayed at a beautiful place on the beach. Far better than the shitfest at Kuta.
A few years later stayed in Legian which was ok, but the beach sucks with too many hawkers. My driver had a massive car accident on the way to a temple, ended up airborne into a rice paddy, luck to survive!
The water trickling was very relaxing

Well done muzz , ive been tuned into your videos and love the unbias opinions that you give in general. Im Australian born but lived in bali on and off for the past 20 years as my father was working for the government as a foreign advisor. I know that private insurance companies are purchasing land in thailand phuket, and bali sanur and southern bukit. These will be set up based on the your video giving people an affordable option to retire in asia, obviously the hard part will be working through immigration legislation regarding their residential status. Once things are on the go i would love you to do a video vlog on that because i knkw this will be exciting times for retirees, local employment and local economies.

Hello! Just had 3 weeks in Bali with my children, 5 nights Ubud, 5 nights Amed, 2 nights Sanur, 8 nights NL, then last night Sanur. Spoke with an American fellow up in Amed, he has a quite nice one bedder he's renting up in Amed for USD 1,200 per annum (!!) - he has spent USD 1,000 on to improve it (kitchen shelves, etc). He said with the amount of Russians and other expats arriving, the prices are going through the roof- a friend of his is now paying over USD 5,000 for similar. Lots of change. If you can find basic and pay for amendments, could be good. What Alan has is really specific for his needs and on his enhanced veterans pension, so is more attractive, wonder how many more apartments like that will become available.
The phone tax is determined by storage capacity. I purchased my phone in Australia, registered it with Customs, and was pleasantly surprised to find no fee. However, the condition is that it should have 128 GB storage or less. It's now got an XL sim in it and it works fine.
Yeah rethinking the whole move. I was convinced I would. But prices are rising. Coming in November for a holiday. I have an expat couple contact I will be catching up wirh. For now, it looks like sticking with holidays for now...sadly. I will catch up with Muzza and the Missus! 😅❤
Any aussie who's sole income is the aged pension can forget about the retirement visa now in Bali. The minimum monthly pension income requirement is US$3,000 and an aussie only gets AU$2,000 a month, not to mention you have to employ 2 locals, show that you have a lease for at least one year. Then 2 types of medical insurance, etc. So you can forget that visa, seems like the only way you can stay there for any length of time, as i said earlier is to stay there on the 6 month kitas visa which is not cheap, and keep paying to renew it every 6 months.☹☹☹
G'day John.
There is a way you can live permanently in South-East Asia without the need for a retirement visa. In my case I will spend sixty days in Bali, followed by sixty days in Thailand, then back to Bali for sixty days, then off to Thailand again. The flights between those two countries can be cheap if booked well in advance. I realise this approach won't be for everyone - however I'm fortunate I have a passion for both countries. For a bit of variety, Malaysia is another option - it has a 90-day Visa On Arrival.

@@fabmanly1070 I'm planning on retiring when I'm 65 (I'm 57 now). I believe I could do fifteen years of crisscrossing between Bali and Thailand - so at 80 I'd probably have to head back to Australia.
@@jamesplunkett9567 There are sooooo many nice places to downsize to in Australia. Don’t buy into the crap on RUclips. These people are trying to maintain and grow channels to make money. I would be looking at North Queensland or Tasmania for a cheaper house. We live in New Zealand (Dual Citizenship), and I too have been looking. It’s all roses until, you get old and then health and/or language barriers kick in.
I doubt that many people actually retire permanently to any of these places, so it’s truely retiring overseas.

I live on the North side of the Island, but I still have to work in Australia still for another 10 years or so, but I’m looking forward to catching up and having a cold beer or 3 with you and Al, one day big Muz,next time I’m in Bali for a couple of weeks, my wife usually allows me to stay in Kuta/Sanur for 3 or 4 days to let my hair down so to speak, give my best to Al

I'd love to retire to Bali. But I have 5 kids, 9 grandkids and a great grandkid on the way. Also, I have 2 kids that haven't had children yet. Plus, a bloke could get stuck in Bali and not be able to get back to Australia in the future. Plus, the Bali bombing still rattles around in my memory.

In regards to language, six months is more than enough time to learn Indonesian to a functional level. When you live in the place it's immersive, so it's much faster than learning 'by book'. Besides, Indonesian (Bahasa) is one of the easiest languages for English speakers. It's phonetic, and very straight forward. There are no sounds or tones English speakers can't manage.
After six months, you shouldn't still need interpreters other than for complex stuff.
You have to take brain plasticity in to account - that being said learning a language has shown to be very good for your mind
Dual sim phone, my Aus one worked, Nokia, I bought in Goodguys and claimed back GST on leaving., no issues.
Bali phones, computers are dodgey.
If your mate can copy the text and paste into Google translate. There is a Google so you can run over text too to translate, it will translate for products and paperwork.
Learning the language and tech might be too difficult though, stress and age will affect that ability.
Take 2xzeros off the money to get an idea of value. 100,000,00 take 2 zeros off $1000. Roughly!
The Bali food is loaded with msg.
He can cross at the bypass lights as a pedestrian. More room is worth the extra cash.
The yearly kitas visa problem killed it, our passports were held hostage. Agents begin trying to extort you, the one in Sauur who runs the babysitting service was the one. You are seen as an ATM.
You need more than a month to experience the issues.

Even at 45yrs old and living in Batam Indoneisa is a challenge, unreal what the local Mrs takes care of things, definitely data, banking, local markets, etc etc... 10yrs time were retiring to Bali, Sanur, Amed - great spots for retirement. Enjoy it Al cheers Muzza.
Batam is the most boring place I ever been. I was going to be there for a month and cut my stay short. Not having to hear those prayers waking me up every morning and dealing with the disrespectful staff at my condo is a very good thing. At least I know where I don’t want to go. I know if I get sick Indonesia is not the place to be.
Try bogor/bandung near jakarta. Batam is definitely not a good choice.

@@kerenbanget1 honestly I will probably never go back to Indonesia. For some reason the tourist trap that is Bali has never interested me and the same for Jakarta as a major city. Also tired of countries where the people act like prehistoric tribespeople.

I've had a massaive headache as well with phones and receiving security texts from my banks to my uk sim here. they dont come though so it's all a massive headache.
As you can only use a local sim for 3 months its best to use it till it runs out at the end of the month then nip down to indo mart to topup. but your rights its a big headache
FYI, there are apps that use the camera on a smart phone to translate text. Would be the easiest way to read the food labels.
Great effort Muz. I have a local wife about 15 yrs till retirement but retire there is the plan happy to die and be buried there. Have Kitas atm was unawear we could get local insurance.
$1K per mo @6:46 it's quite high a bit for locals (indonesia people), but for you guys maybe it's cheaper.
For me in big city like Jakarta $500/mo already included my basic needs , water , electric , wifi , foods, and rent, yes all in per mot just $500

I just warched a video about getting the Australuan aged pension overseas when you retire out of Australia. It seems after 5 years as a non-resident of Australia, you need to go back to Australia to live for 2 years in order to continue receiving the pension (refer to Portability, I think). I will need to watch the video again to make sure I got that right.
I have been looking at Cambodia to retire to because the visa process is so easy, but almost everything needs to be paid in USD, which makes it way more expensive when the conversion rate is close to 60 cents. How are most things paid in Bali now? Can you still pay for most things in rupiah? That would just be one conversion.

Alan fairly lucky as he has VA gold card. Most pensioners could not afford the 1k a month just for accommodation. It would only leave 1k a month to live on which is cutting it very fine.
I wouldnt say he is lucky, i would think he has spent most of his life serving our country and is now enjoying the privilege that his hard work, blood sweat and tears has afforded him in his retirement.
I have a DVA Gold Card, I would gladly swap it for my own body parts back and some sanity. The new system is typical government escapism of responsibility. In two years I'll be 67 and instead of a pension for life, I will be cut down to 50% and placed on one hundred dollars above the old age pension. Can't escape Australia and can't live in it. Serving the country has changed since they changed the legislation on medical discharge!
that bathroom is good for mobility issues, what size is it? regarding the phones, why dont you put differnt tones for emails and messages and calls on each. ie a frog sound on one phone and ringing sound on the other.

I do not eat bread in most Asian countries as it is mostly has a very sweet taste.
I left a loaf of bread on the kitchen bench to see how long it took to go bad....3 months later it looked the same as it did the day I brought it, so what preservatives, etc. do they add to the ingredients????

The major reason people retire to SE Asia is the comparatively low cost of living when compared to Australia. As for food, “when in Rome, do as the Romans do” .
My wife and I will move to SE Asia in 12 months, we will be happy to turn our backs on European style food in favour of the local cuisine, which is more suited to the climate.

I retired in the Philippines early in life. Then went to apply for my pension and found out I have to return to Australia for 2 years to get the pension. Absolute bullshit. Cheaper to stay in the Philippines than the cost to go back to Australia and live.
Hey Muz, With those messages you are getting that aren't in English you can copy and paste the entire message into google translate. It's not the best but you'll get the general idea of what it's saying
When quoting prices it maybe handy to mention the currency. Eg: $2.50, USD or AUD?

Bali is too crowded. The west coast of Thailand is Bali 50 years ago. Surfing not so good but I’m not that good at surfing so we good.
