    This song is way underrated and doesn't get the credit it deserves. I've always loved the way that the solo just shreds itself into existence at the beginning of it.

    The Unforgiven trilogy is a travel inside the soul and demons of James.
    The Unforgivens: 1, can't forgive parents/the system 2, can't forgive partner/significant other, and finally 3, can't forgive himself.
    Unforgiven trilogy is a lot to take in all at once for sure! Us mortals had to wait 17 years for all 3 songs!!!
    And then put into context how big Metallica are... They were playing 10 years previously before that and have been playing another 12 years and going after the last one!

    This will be a bit long... I just watched all 3 reactions they were all great. I will preface my comments by stating that I have been a HUGE Metallica fan since about 1985. My first thought is that depending on your age and life situation, it's going to impact your view on these 3 songs.
    I was in my early 20's when I first heard Unforgiven 1. Loved the song along with everyone else but it didn't hit home. I was in my early 20's, and still in that faze where I thought I would live forever.
    I was in my LATE 20's when I heard Unforgiven 2. Still single. Thought it was a good song but couldn't relate to it in any way.
    For Unforgiven 3, I was in my 30's. This song really hit's home for me. In fact I tear up every time I listen to it. I struggle with forgiveness for things I've done wrong in my life. So for me, my favorite is the third song.
    If you had asked me 10 years ago what my second favorite song was I probably would have said the first. But I've gotten married since then and that second song has taken on a whole new meaning for me. It's really hard to share your life with someone all the good AND the bad which is what this song is about. That's real struggle for me especially when I'm still struggling with forgiving myself for past transgressions. How can you forgive others, when you are sill struggling to forgive yourself? It gets really confusing and messy when you really start exploring this stuff :-(
    Great reaction as always.

    • @webcrawler2007
      @webcrawler2007 3 года назад

      This is the best synopsis of the three songs that I've read. I completely agree, and my understanding of them today parallels this.
      My coming to this realization was slightly different, as the first one gripped me early in the 90s, and I appreciated the 2nd and identified with it but it didn't take over like the 3rd did. The 3rd took over in a way the others just didn't. I never quite got why that was until you verbalized it for me. Thank you for your insight

  • @Avonidsed
    @Avonidsed 4 года назад +5

    I think the reason I think this song is so powerful is because it's hardest to forgive yourself because it is the longest journey and we are usually the most resistant to examine ourselves and realize that we did wrong and need to acknowledge that. Then, the guilt and shame after that acknowledgement keeps us from allowing ourselves to forgive us.
    If you look at the songs there's a progression, both through live, our view points at a given age, and maturing.
    The first song decries society and it's effects on us, which is the crutch most of us use in dealing with our problems - "it's not me, I did this because others made me..."
    The second song is about our personal relationships with others - The "You did X so I'm justified in doing Y" and by the end of that song its learning to move past that and forgive the other. But there's still that element of selfishness where if you didn't do what you did, I wouldn't have done what I did.
    The third, and for me the most impactfull (maybe because I'm now a 46 year old man) is realizing that you bear responsibility in your life, and while when you were younger it was easier to pass off that responsibility to others, ultimately it is your actions that lead you down a path. And as you've pointed out, forgiving yourself is the hardest thing to do.

  • @JoeBlythe

    "How can I be lost, if I've got nowhere to go?" The way I took this lyric was that he has become lost, unable to find true happiness, but he only needs to stop running and look within. He has begun to realize that there are people he can trust all around him, but first he needs to forgive himself for casting them aside because of others who's actions caused him to be apprehensive of trusting anyone in the first place. He's got nowhere to go, because the answer is within himself.

    My favourite is the first Unforgiven. It expresses a lot more tragedy, partly because of the backstory, and also because of the way it sounds melodically, and how the vocals during the chorus can be mistaken for expressing happiness, but when you really listen to the words, and understand the meaning behind them, it almost magically transforms into sounding deeply sad. It makes you really feel the sadness and conflict within the singer's voice.

    This song incorporated instruments from an orchestra, like when they did songs with S&M. They really compliment each other and again it's straight up a Masterpiece. And hell yeah, that guitarlo was totally epic. So much feeling and change ups, then crashing hard metal. And James once again shows off his vocal ranges and sensitivity. Pure and utter GREATNESS!!!

    The original was my favorite because James really showcases some introspective lyrics for the second time in their career (the first being “Dyer’s Eve). Not to mention, it’s instrumentally perfect.
    I loved James’ voice on Unforgiven Too and I think the song was designed well.
    Unforgiven 3 was great, but the guitar solo of the first one sounds better to me.

      Indeed. Guitarlo. Guitar solo. Just having fun 😀. There’s also drumlo’s as well 🙃

    This song isn't as good as the first two. It has some great parts but some other parts is why it doesn't get as much attention. Also listen to "bleed well" by HIM. Same riff. (HIM was first lol)

    Metallica is the gateway metal band. Welcome, and up the irons.
