Since 2021 it is illegal to fly over 120m in the EU with all the hobby drones.
It is totally irrelevant if the firmware allows more or not. It is not allowed to fly higher anyway.
And yes, I always stay within 120m

I've just sold my Mini 3 Pro and have the Mini 4 Pro... I'm happy with my choice. I mainly did it for waypoints and omnidirectional avoidance... and I'm thrilled with it. The side bonus I didn't expect was how much better Occusync 4 is compared to Occusync 3. It's a huge jump like 1->2 was and not the tiny jump 2->3 was... this drone goes ANYWHERE and never loses signal. I'm very happy.

Get it in fcc mode if you use Rc- n2 with mavic 3 and rc-n1 with it I have 1000m limit and fcc power

I upgraded from DJI mini SE to DJI mini 4 pro and I found that mini se is much better in windy conditions. Mini 4 pro is struggling a lot with some wind. Is the same for you?

I sold my DJI Mini 3 PRO Fly More Combo for what corresponds to £673 6 days ago. Now I'm the proud and happy owner of a DJI Mini-4 PRO. And with features like the omnidirectional obstacle avoidance, advanced and easy to use active track, advanced Waypoint planner and precision landing I finally have the missing features of Mini 3 PRO. The extra money I had to throw in is completely worth it, also I have .1 year and 5 month newer drone with fresh batteries and warranty

Can you please do a video on the gain and expo settings to get smooth cinematic shots? I am struggling with this new m4p. Everything is just so jerky when I am filming. I had some good settings for the m2 and m3p but there were only 4 simple settings to adjust for pitch and yaw. Please do a video for the best setting for smooth cinematic shots.
Hi Darren - wondering if, like the Avata, the drone stops you landing in water? There seem to be extra sensors at the bottom, unsure if they are ONLY for precision landing.
And from the looks of it, the much-loved recent feature "put 3 batteries in the charger, then put all availabel charge into one" isn't on this drone?

The rules state closest point to ground (crucial point: in any direction), so it is perfectly legal to fly off of a cliff even if the height below the drone then becomes more than 120 m. However, that is of course much more complicated for drone manufacturers to implement (they'd need a reliable, built-in height map to go by), so they probably will just stick to AGL.

I wonder if you don't update the Mini 4 will it still be affected with these limits... I bought one this week and tomorrow I go on a trip for 2 weeks to test it out and hopefully make awesome stock footage. Unfortunately the ND filters are still not available here in Holland. Have a great weekend!
Have you compared the ND filter options for the Mini 4 Pro in terms of ND accuracy, sharpness, and any color shift? It looks like the only choices are DJI, Freewell, and Skyreat.

The Mini 3 (non pro) will receive this update as well I guess? If so, I will not update my Mini 3 anymore as I first want to check how the drone behaves in the mountains (Switserland) when I limit the altitude to 120 manually
Kan You tell what number the last not restricted version is? There is an update knocking on the door but why update when the system does what I want it to do?

I have wondered this. If your take off point is on top of a 120 meter hill, and you fly 120 meters higher, are you in violation if you fly laterally over the ground 240 meters below?

Where can I see all these videos, where drones legally flew higher than 120m? In my opinion it is an absolutely rare case. The fact that so many people are complaining about it is probably the reason why it is required. ;)

That really makes sense. But, I even havent sold my mini 2 or even tello. Considering mini 3 being almost similar to mini 4, I will definitely keep it as a spare drone if I buy mini 4.
When people break the rules (120m / 400ft), it affects the entire community and forces the rules to be enforced strictly - software updated due to new laws being introduced. While I understand that sometimes you need to go slightly higher than 120m to get a quality shot, it's essential to play by the book for the good of the drone flyers community. Regarding drones, upgrading from M3P to M4P is nice but not a game-changer. Investing in a second drone like the Air3 or Mavic3 is better + A2 CofC or other drone certifications. As someone who part-time creates videos with drones for a living, I recommend this approach. Wishing you safe and enjoyable flights! Peace
Ye i agree and did that. Mav 3 classic and now the m4p as really wanted the dlog-m and waypoints for seasonal transitions over cities. Nothing wrong with the min 3 at all. I got the cofc but i find it’s still a pain if a busy area and that 50 meters distance. I find just using a mini is so much less hassle. Mavic classic for better photos and jobs in the sticks lol

Hi Darren, volks, good argument but there is one more drawback which disappointed me when I received my M4p two days ago. It does not support 2.7K video resolution anymore. Same seems to be the case for the Air 3 as well. But as my use case (M3p) is to capture almost always in 2.7K video mode only and render for YT in 4K finally which delivers excellent results (you can have a look at my videos) I'm going to return my M4p to DJI soon. I contacted DJI's support yesterday and they stated to forward my request to their development department for the wishlist for future firmware updates, but they could not promise anything. With recording in 2.7K only and upscaling to 4K later, which I practice for my DJI Pocket 2 as well, I can handle the smaller file sizes much better as I just use my tablet computer for cutting and postprocessing. With all in 4K I have to give up this and need to invest in much more expensive hardware. So, if there are others out there wanting 2.7K back, please let's join our forces and approach to DJI as well! Thanks & Cheers from Germany, Bernd 🎬
Upscale to 4K? Why would you waste people's bandwidth like that? Always post it under native res.
But they should have retained older rec profiles.

I bought the mini 4 pro, but I decided to keep the mini 3 Pro. At first to have a spare drone in case of a crash of the 4, but now also because of the height limit of 500 meters. I know it's not legal, but sometimes I want to get an overall shot of the terrain I intend to film and the 3 is great for that. Of course I never use this option near airfields.
If it does go up in price i might sell my m3p, but still loving it so not in a rush.
The value might increase but doubtful, because as soon as the DJI firmware updates I would presume it will restrict all older models too.
you missed the point. The mini 3 pro has mature firmware. You don't have to update it.
I did have the Fab Mavic 3 and Mini 3 pro. Reducing weight I carry on hiking started with selling Mavic 3. Age has its effects …. I sold my Mini 3 Pro (got a good price😮) and bought Mini 4 Pro ( weather awful just now so not yet used😢).
Regarding flight restriction of 120 m / 390 feet for me isn’t a problem. I think like many initially I thought that a high altitude was what a drone was all about. I’m an amateur photographer and a drone is for those awkward shots just out of reach. I very rarely now fly anywhere near 390 feet; a lot of the time I’m near ground level ( over a river, under a bridge, that odd view I’m not able to get to etc).
A totally different subject question if I might ask regarding VLOS? My understanding is that I should constantly keep my eye on my drone ….. in this case how? Since the controller screen is the tool to enable use of a drone. Regarding the use of DJI’ AVATA and FPV use ~ how does VLOS work?

I wanted the waypoint function and opted for a Mavic 3 classic. Keeping my mini 3 pro.
That's my plan as well.
It would be good to keep us updated re firmware on mini pro 3. I will want to upgrade to 4 but not selling my 3 yet.

I live in the highlands of Scotland and am not able to walk up those mountains. Mini 4 pro is not for me.
If you update your home point when flying, you won’t have issues with the 120m restriction while climbing altitude. Take it from someone who uses his new mini 4 pro in the mountain of BC. Cheers

@@swilson317 it would return to the last updated home point, which is what you would want if hiking or driving anyway. I wish it had an auto mode for that.

120m limit will also limit the range of mini 4 pro, making O4 moot point. I frequently fly at 500m to maintain signal.
The two things are not connected or dependent on each other.

Ground Control to Pilot Darren. I plan on traveling to EU countries and have my FAA Remote Pilot Certificate from USA. Does the 120 meter height rule apply to licensed pilots? What is the advantage of having my certificate in EU? I have a DJI Mini 3 pro. Also, please keep us informed on software update that will limit the height. Thank you.
Good information! So how does this 120 meter limit work if you have to fly over a building that is taller than 120 meters?
In the eu it will be irrelevant, it’s a lock so you cannot increase the height slider over 120m in any situation
Would not be surprised if this is applied in Australia as well as the 120m(400ft) rule has been in place for quite a while enforced by the aviation regulator.
In Australia it is 120 meters down. So it's a downgrade basically.
The height limit issue on the mini 3 is pretty irrelevant anyway. As the range is so bad in ce mode, you'll be lucky to get to 120m anyway.
Always said from the start the last thing you want is a C0 drone. It was clear in the regs that the ability to c9nteol max alt would be removed.
I will just get a Air 3.Job done.

It would likely stay C1 as long as DJI can legally do so, but that's entirely their call.

Excellent explanation, if I had the Mini 3 Pro I would never have bought the Mini 4. Coming from the mini 2, a huge difference, and I'm loving it.
Something nobody ever mentions is the stick mode on the drone, default stick mode 2. In this mode I always had to concentrate on the sticks. But if you're a gamer - like me - whack it into stick mode 3, flying free, full automatic, don't even have to concentrate. This is obviously in my case of course!

That's exactly my approach! Although I bought the Mini 4 Pro for its benefits, I will keep my Mini 3 Pro for “special operations.” I froze the firmware of the M3P and its RC controller. It works well and will do in the future with exactly the firmware that allows me the “mountain option” up to 500 meters. I just took the M3P with me on a road trip through the Dolomites and it fulfilled my scenarios very well, even just before dawn. The M3P is a great tool that is small enough not to scare anyone and doesn't take up much space to carry. I'm even thinking about buying another M3P just in case the first one fails, but also owning an Air 3 that could come to the rescue this would be kind of overkill in my opinion.
Keep your M3P. You won't regret it.
mini 3 pro needs a hack
No Problem if the new regulations beginning in Jan 2024 may set the max. height for me Mini 4 Pro again back to 120m only (my 'Mini 4 Pro' has currently been put back to 500m limit by a recent firmware update). Then I won't do the relevant firmware update putting it again on 120m. And as the 'Mini 3 Pro' is also going to be upgraded to the C0-limits, there is actually no more advantage to keep the 'Mini 3 Pro'. I've also sold it since I have had the 'Mini 4 Pro'.

Another fine mess from our European friends!!! I was in France this year and the no fly zones were so fine detailed and complicated and the punishment so harsh that I decided to simply not fly my MP3. We had an Air2S come over the campsite one day and it caused a big ruckus amongst people so just not worth it in the end. Apparently France have drone detectors/destroyers now and have them at the Rugby World Cup venues. Not sure how true that is?
An interesting question might be can you get round this by using different software or is it hardware locked?. It would probably mean having to use your phone again but I do worry that the drone could get stuck if you're in a valley of some nature?

I got $1085 USD for my Mini 3 Pro. on Ebay. That's including a Freewell Bright Day kit (6 ND's) a DJI Wide Angle Lens, and a few accessories that I won't re-use. We aren't affected by the C0 restriction, but I was only out about $180 to upgrade. I am okay with it.
I'm in this camp too. I sold before most people even knew a Mini 4 pro was coming, so the value was still good. I needed to sell fast so i couldn't get a super high return but certainly higher then if i kept it after the Mini 4 came out or had i skipped a generation. Waypoints and the transition improvements were enough of a reason to upgrade for me.
Now that is a good deal!

You already take it as God-given that as of January 1st, 2024 the current 500m max altitude will be reduced to 120m above the starting point. Could be DJI will introduce a smart solution: keep 500m, but with a disclaimer like the current one with the 4pro. That would also make sense and a serious pilot can also maintain the 120m/GND, but is not restricted in hilly terrain. When they launched the 4pro, I decided to keep my 3pro and not do any updates because I now have the features that were previously missing from the 3pro on the 4pro.
How would they calculate the height above ground level. As far as I know it calculates its height based on the small changes in air pressure as you go up in altitude. I don’t know if it does this using a barometer or if it measures the torque required to spin the motor. If they put a laser tape measure on the bottom to measure the distance to ground people will just put opaque tape over it so the drone thinks its always on the ground.
@@grizzlybear2702 yep, but.... the regulations say crystalclear: "max 120m (400ft) over GND" (and NOT abv startingpoint!).
The drones height is measured by means of satellites, not barometric pressure, which is less accurate. 1 hP (or millibar) e.g. diff makes 27ft (approx 8.3 m) height diff.
Acft on an instrument approach into an airport are measuring the height abv GND in the very last segment of the approach by the means of radar (ground proximity warning). This is very accurate but out of budget/weight for small drones.

They should let us fly to the maximum service ceiling at our own risk. I honestly never knew that gps could also calculate the distance between drone and ground. There is a FCC hack to increase radio transmission power so someone will come along and unlock the max height

Well, in the same manner, you can say that at the moment, the DJI Mini 4 PRO is allowed to fly up to 500m in EU. so if you don't update firmware next year, you have the same advantages as the proclaimed Mini 3 Pro plus all the extra functions .. so this video makes no sense. 😀
Gutted I was hoping nobody was going to do a video on not selling their Mini 3P as the value will sky rocket without any software update with height restrictions etc. I’m sure they’ll add cruise control & waypoints to dangle the carrot for people to update their software.
