I’d often wondered that I might accidentally stumble across him one day, and never pretend to understand his creations but still be very grateful that what he produced was inspiring, ahead of its time and touched me in a way that I cannot explain. Yes! I worked in a club called Fahrenheit 101 in college from Thursday - Sunday. My shift was 9-2am. Alcohol had to be pulled at 2 but after house went on til 5am. Thursday felt like OMG let's GO! Friday & Saturday were off the chain hype! Sunday were the true partiers who wanted their last call for hearing the DJ spin & getting their groove on! Let's face it, we were all drenched in sweat with the smell of Drakkar in the air. 🤣
I was a teenager in the 80s and we definitely lived through this! These were the songs on the radio and the LPs (and then CDs) we bought. I always regretted not growing in the 60s but the 80s were fun too… you would’ve liked it.
I was 17 in 1984 and the music was far better than what passes for music now. The 80’s were a much better time (the weed was fantastic and everywhere), but the most of the hairstyles and clothes were absolutely hideous.

As an '80s teen I wished I could have grown up listening to groups like The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Association, and The Mamas and the Papas, but now I wish I had really appreciated what we had a little more than I did. I really took the amazing music we had back in the '80s for granted.

Beautiful, beautiful band. They had a few hits, but emmersing yourself in their albums, from start to finish, is a whole other trip. Next time it snows, listen to Spirit of Eden. Also Colour of Spring. Those albums are not Top 10 friendly, but so atmospheric it hurts. Lex makes total sense about her commentary.

Talk Talk's music was ethereal like, beautiful and with a very good, strong message. It's a mainstay on my playlists and this song was also covered by Gwen Stefani and No Doubt. Check out some of their other classics "Talk Talk", "Life's What You Make It" and the epic "New Grass"

Recommendation to track down Talk Talk Live at Montreux, Mark Hollis' intensity shines like a beacon. It became even more powerful when I heard of his passing. I still think we missed so much when Hollis retired so early.

Lex's "dreamlike" ability to imagine music from other eras set to everyday, mundane events is actually a great way to conceptualize these videos. For instance, I grew up in the 70's and 80's and I never set foot into a dance club. I grew up, like a lot of Midwestern kids, during this time and these songs conjure a lot of memories with friends, at the swimming pool, at school, at work and at home.
In 1984 it was impossible to avoid hearing this song everywhere, and the video was on MTV all the time. This was back when MTV stood for “Music Tele Vision” and they played music videos and concerts 24/7.

When you picture the 80s, give a thought to the cats whose parents couldn't afford cable for MTV, and spent their time after school listening to the radio on their tiny boom boxes with double cassette recorders, just waiting for the right song to come on. Hitting record fast enough to not cut off the first good bits required both talent and luck. Mostly luck.
Yes he is the singer & writer and it’s approx 1982. One of the greatest of the 80’s. This came on and you HAD to dance, your body moved. No night at the club was complete without this song playing.
The man in the video is the singer and main songwriter. I don't know why, but 4 of the 5 Talk Talk albums have animals on the cover. They started off in the beginning of the eighties making great pop rock songs, and on the last two albums switched to more ambient post-rock type songwriting. Great band, haven't made a bad record and ended up being incredibly influential.
A great song. One of my favorites. In the 80's the world was limitless. The creation of the personal computer, Beepers/cell phones, new sound of music from punk rock to new wave/alternative rock. The birth of hip hop/rap music. It was today but in the simplest form.

I’d say from 1981 to maybe 1987 each week it seemed there were class tunes such as this being released. We truly were spoiled. Then it became cool in the 90’s & 00’s to dismiss the 80’s - I think primarily from an album point of view but that’s all in the past now & it’s great to see the young ones today appreciating the great music we had in the 80’s Btw- Lex is absolute joy, Brads a very lucky boy indeedy.
Their third album, The Colour Of Spring, is one of my faves. Some of Mark's best writing. I can still listen to it on repeat. Life's What You Make It will always be my #1 from this band. Such a cool groove. RIP Mr. Hollis. ✌️
I loved this song when it first came out. 20 years later No Doubt did a cover. My daughter bought their cd. She played it and I recognized the song right away.
The reason the video shows birds and animals is that many of the sounds used in the track are from samples of animal and bird calls. Listen to it again and try and identify which animals/birds they used. Talk Talk did a lot of ground breaking experimental stuff like that and made it into beautiful music.
This was a huge popular hit as well as a dance club hit. The video was in constant rotation on MTV (which was a big deal in the 80's). The lyrics don't have anything to do with the video but the video is so great to look at and the song pulls you along, building to three crescendos.
Lex, you are tuning into the 80s!! That image of getting ready in the morning and hearing the radio on the car was exactly how it was for me. A lot of the "new wave" or alternative type music of the 80s is what is considered quintessential 80s but actually it wasn't what was on top 40 radio. Here in San Diego there was a radio station, 91X, that played "rock of the 80s" and had all this new-wave, alternative type stuff. I was a teenager during the 80s listening to all this new music. It was a time of huge variety and changes in music. It was the era of moving from the baby boomers to Gen X! The first big change was punk which sort of blew up the old ways, then post-punk and new-wave, alternative, etc. It went in many different directions. A big part of it was the new technology too. Synthesizers, drum machines and all that stuff. Getting back to the foundation of synth new-wave, pop, punk check out Kraftwerk, Gary Numan and Devo - pioneers!

The Lee Harris of Nick Mason's band is the guitarist, a completely different person than the Lee Harris drummer of Talk Talk. Nick Mason is the sole drummer in his own band.

They started off in the beginning of the eighties making great pop rock songs, and on the last two albums switched to more ambient post-rock type songwriting. Great band, haven't made a bad record and ended up being incredibly influential.

Talk Talk's Pop hits are great but their real musical masterpieces are the 'Spirit of Eden' and 'Laughing Stock' albums. Mark Hollis RIP. Much missed.
Both of those albums are underappreciated masterpieces. I really with they would both get new remastered and extended releases.

A great song. One of my favorites. In the 80's the world was limitless. The creation of the personal computer, Beepers/cell phones, new sound of music from punk rock to new wave/alternative rock. The birth of hip hop/rap music. It was today but in the simplest form.

The 80s had many great songs. This is one of those songs for me that I shouldn't really care for, but it haunts me then. It haunts me now. I don't know why. RIP, Mark.
I’d say from 1981 to maybe 1987 each week it seemed there were class tunes such as this being released.
We truly were spoiled.
Then it became cool in the 90’s & 00’s to dismiss the 80’s - I think primarily from an album point of view but that’s all in the past now & it’s great to see the young ones today appreciating the great music we had in the 80’s
Btw- Lex is absolute joy, Brads a very lucky boy indeedy.
Their third album, The Colour Of Spring, is one of my faves. Some of Mark's best writing. I can still listen to it on repeat. Life's What You Make It will always be my #1 from this band. Such a cool groove. RIP Mr. Hollis. ✌️
Gwen Stefani's hit cover version (with her band No Doubt) from 2003 is quite good and the video is well-produced. Worth a listen and look.
I loved this song when it first came out. 20 years later No Doubt did a cover. My daughter bought their cd. She played it and I recognized the song right away.

The reason the video shows birds and animals is that many of the sounds used in the track are from samples of animal and bird calls. Listen to it again and try and identify which animals/birds they used.
Talk Talk did a lot of ground breaking experimental stuff like that and made it into beautiful music.

This was a huge popular hit as well as a dance club hit. The video was in constant rotation on MTV (which was a big deal in the 80's). The lyrics don't have anything to do with the video but the video is so great to look at and the song pulls you along, building to three crescendos.

That image of getting ready in the morning and hearing the radio on the car was exactly how it was for me. A lot of the "new wave" or alternative type music of the 80s is what is considered quintessential 80s but actually it wasn't what was on top 40 radio.
Here in San Diego there was a radio station, 91X, that played "rock of the 80s" and had all this new-wave, alternative type stuff. I was a teenager during the 80s listening to all this new music.
It was a time of huge variety and changes in music. It was the era of moving from the baby boomers to Gen X! The first big change was punk which sort of blew up the old ways, then post-punk and new-wave, alternative, etc. It went in many different directions.
A big part of it was the new technology too. Synthesizers, drum machines and all that stuff.
Getting back to the foundation of synth new-wave, pop, punk check out Kraftwerk, Gary Numan and Devo - pioneers!
