  • Adding mica powder to your 3D printer resin is a great way to add a unique shimmer effect to your prints and give them some extra depth. Longer reached out to me and asked me to test out their standard MSLA photopolymer resin and I knew this would be the perfect experiment! MORE BELOW -------↡↡↡↡

if you want to achieve layered 'marbeling' you can pour in a different color half way through the print and you kind of get that effect!

These are cool prints, Andrew! I was surprised your blue and pink didn't end up more purplish rather than gray, but loved the shimmer and sparkle of that print. I use mica powders in my paper crafting on
occasion - wish I had added to your birthday card, but maybe next time 😉

Aww, thanks Marty! I've got enough mica glitter on me right now to last until at least next year, so I think you're good!

Awesome! Please do try this with a clear resin; that's pretty cool.

it works insanely well in clear resins and you get a tiger eye effect with most micas

Good experiment and well documented too! I think I might try just leaving the powder UNMIXED on top of the resin int eh vat and see what happens. My concern is that the part will fall off the build plate. (I'm making a large part, so that's a concern anyway.) Good job!

Thank you foe making this video Andrew! 😃👍
Do you have any suggested settings for making the black resin on the market more opaque using black mica powder?

Great experiment!! Thank you! I want to print my bjd's but experiment with glittery skin. These glitters are a tad too large for my liking...wonder if there is a finer glitter to use. Thanks again!

Just tried this because i wanted to print in color but only had standard grey resin. i mixed in quite a bit of blue mica powder pigment and had 1 semi successful print on the first attempt. Next 2 prints failed horribly. found out pigment settled (despite mixing) and more or less cooked itself to the FEP. FEP is ruined and i need to replace my screen protector as well because of leakthrough resin. My advice is dont try this experiment, it isnt worth it. It puts extra stress on FEP and will cause it to fail eventually. Also they sell resin in a variety of colors SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED for printing, just pay the extra $ and spare yourself the pain and headache that i experienced.

Hi. Very nice helpful and interesting video! Is mica powder magnetic? I ask because I usually use a magnetic flex plate on my resin printer

No. There might be specific magnetic pigments out there but in general, no.

Most of what I've seen says a 1:4 ratio of powder to resin to get a really saturated color

I think it's a nice effect, but it begs the question what else can you safely mix into it?

I was just thinking that exact same thing!

I know it's been a year since you posted this but do you think this would work with glitters? Temped to try it with a clear resin so I can print ghostly shimmery characters that stay translucent.

Give it a shot! It should work, and I’d be curious to hear how it works for you!

Yes, but here is the real question. Can you add super fine sand to resin in order to increase its volume at little cost?

    You didn't use enough.

Next time I'll fill the vat with glitter and toss in a few drops of resin!
