Does the Tory Party hate young people? Home Secretary quizzed on LBC

- Опубликовано: 25 май 2024
- James Cleverly has said a proposed new National Service for 18-year-olds is "compulsory" but those who refuse will not receive "criminal sanctions".
On Saturday, the Prime Minister announced the new election pledge and confirmed all 18-year-olds will be made to enrol in a year-long military placement or spend one weekend each month volunteering under the plan.
Mr Sunak has received backlash to the proposal but said he wanted the changes to instil a "shared sense of purpose” in youngsters.
The Home Secretary has defended the idea to Lewis Goodall on LBC on Sunday and said he hopes the scheme will help fix social fragmentation.

As a Gen X I can honestly say that young people do NOT live in 'their own little bubble', they are literally the most diverse and inclusive generation we have ever had. They also have to work harder than any previous generation and for an awful lot less. It's the boomers who absolutely live in their own little comfy bubble with little to no understanding of how others think or feel, or indeed, the challenges they face. Perhaps its time we looked at how the boomers could make an actual contribution to society instead of the current condition wherein they are the beneficiaries of everyone else's hard work. These tories are absolute crackpots and clearly in full troll mode now that they know they will lose at the next general election.
Thanks for saying this. It needed to be said. Fellow GenXer with young adult kids.
Same. Also GenXer. I've found them, on average, more open and curious than we were at that age - and certainly more than our parents' generation
I certainly agree that this suggestion by the Tories is ridiculous and pointless. However I also see that as a Gen X you get a lot of your frustrations out by blaming the baby boomers of which I am one. Please do not tar us all with the same brush. Not all boomers are wealthy and living comfortable lives. I am 70. I have worked as a nurse all my life - at times, when on call, working a 24 hour shift with no sleep and for a fairly low pay at the time. The government changed our pension ages by six years without informing us in time to make provision for our old age. This lost me approx £45,000. I live in a terrace house in Barnsley - when I bought it the mortgage interest rate was around 17% - and due to ill health had to leave work when I finally got my pension. I now volunteer to walk dogs for elderly and people with terminal illnesses so they can keep their pets at home. I help raise money for local theatre which has a very active youth group and I volunteer to help raise funds for our local hospice. I litter pick every week and help with litter bins on our local walking trail. I would not say that I am in my own little comfy bubble. Lets not get angry with other generations - lets get angry with the governments that put us in this position.
@@sadies2820 I agree, and my Mum has already corrected me on this. character building is a problem for you
They try to get people on job seekers to work for local companies without pay all the time. If people refuse they can have their payments cut, they talk quite openly about people needing to work for benefits that would mean working for who they are told to not who they choose to for way less than minimum wage. Its has been happening for years and this is now the second election they have been pushing the concept to be more widely utilised.
extending this aside, one could raise the objection that 'slavery' refers to a way of living - or not living - & that the entity being forwarded is very different owing to the fact it's undertaken only periodically, & then by arrangement, with - no-doubt - significant latitude as to the terms of that arrangement to which the doer is allowed to contribute

If this shows anything it is that the Tories are fighting to survive an election not win an election. Normally they would propose much more moderate things to appeal to moderate voters but they are losing their far right base of voters to Reform or not-voting. Normally they can just take them for granted but they are actually having to try and appeal to them so they can survive the election.

I haven't listened to Lewis Goodall before - which appears to be a gross oversight on my part. Hearing the HS questioned about the tory National Service Policy my first impressions are that Lewis is a very astute interviewer, well armed with relevant facts at his fingertips. His tone is polite and respectful whilst being able to strike right to the heart of the subject to expose and challenge flaws, weaknesses and absurdity of the policy. You can see the HS start to flounder when faced with the logical challenges resulting in him resorting to a personal attack - a sure sign of defeat. It's such a valuable public service when media can effectively call the government and politicians to account. It's something that doesn't happen often enough elsewhere. Well done Lewis and LBC.
