'We're going back to 1947': Tory MP pressed on Sunak's mandatory national service plan

- As Rishi Sunak plans to bring back mandatory national service if he wins the general election, Paul Brand wonders why we're putting this 'burden' on the younger generation.
18-year-olds would have a choice of either joining the military full-time for a year, or volunteering for a weekend every month carrying out a community service.
Speaking to Tory MP, Tobias Ellwood, Paul Brand asks: 'Why are the Tories claiming that Labour would take us back to square one, yet they're taking us back to 1947?'
In response, Elwood says it's because we've entered a 'grim chapter in our history' that we simply must prepare for.
Brand also interviews Naomi Smith, Chief Executive of Best for Britain, who stresses Sunak's plan 'smacks of desperation' and 'feels like a punishment for the young'.

As a former soldier and recent reservist, national service is ridiculous. It's emotional nonsense of the Tories thinking we live in the past. Build a better military for the future, don't break international relationships with our neighbours, stop wasting money on corruption with your friends. The army does not want unmotivated people. David Cameron tried this with his volunteering scheme in 2010 to get elected then did nothing. Plus why young people, oh they don't vote. Try doing it with older people you Tory
Exactly - also, don’t they realise that the UK is a vastly different place to how it was 64 years ago? Society is fragmented, that’s not necessarily a negative per se - it’s just indicative of a more diverse and complicated (and more progressive) society.
You talk the truth.
Feels to me like a desperate political stunt for the election. It could backfire.
Agreed I remember when cameron tried the same thing...
I'd also be worried about things like national security. Forcing people to join the military against their will probably isn't going to fill them will a patriotic sense of duty towards the government that has put them in that position. It's also going to be inevitable that is will reinforce class divides as you can bet the people with money and power will be able to get their own children out of it.
Better pay and guaranteed housing or a significant reduction in mortgage payments may incentivise some.

We could, but the political choice is not to. Same as things like de privatisation and adequate funding of the NHS or local councils, social housing and on and on. All political choices and not a question of funding. Government can create and spend as much money as it wants. Just look at where the Government borrowing is now compared to 2010. They spaffed that money on themselves and their mates in a wealth transfer from the future taxes of the people. Probably do the jobs of porters, cleaners and kitchen staff which means they can cut the hours of current workers doing the especially as it is weekends when they receive a slightly higher rate or is overtime for some.
@@lizdocherty3067 A lot of these staff are paid minimum wage. Cutting hours would be devastating to their family incomes. Someone I know works as a Band 2 operating theatre assistant told me that her daughter gets paid more than her working at Aldi. She is seriously considering leaving her job.
Most porters and cleaners are band 1,weekly paid, £22K a year, and some of those are zero hour contracts
Project fear campaign up and running i see .
We dont have a housing crisis, if we have no young people. Problem solved.
What a horrific thought!
The Tories have done so much to bring about this 1930's situation (Russian money for Brexit)...
The EU army .
@@francesbrown5116 if only there was one because Tory Brexit Britain hasn't got so much as a penknife for defence 🖊 🤡 🇬🇧
It's wrong. It's disgusting.
Do you remember when bojo put the son of a kgb into the house of lords? It's great to hear someone who supported that being concerned for what is best for the nation.
That nation presumably being Russia.
Also refused to publish the report on Russia.
Keep the army professional.
Tories are really out of sensible ideas.
Rishi sunk 😂
Who’s going to train them? Oh yes the overstretched army🙄🙄🙄 pathetic policy 🤬🤬🤬
Every MP and Lords children need to spend 18months in the armed forces no exceptions, short of disabilities. Then we can talk about national service
Without automatically getting into officer training
No officer's just privates like everyone else, let then earn rank
Take away all opportunities and hope for the younger generation then expect them to do "mandatory" volunteering in order to provide an unpaid boost to the underfunded public services. WTAF...
If you think il put my son or daughter through that you’ve got another thing coming
A 1930's feel? Who was around back then to confirm this now?
He's desperate for this because he got beaten up by a group of kids he told off in the park
So we’re going to train them with even better fighting skills 🙄🙄🙄😂😂😂
You read my mind !!! LoL😅
It's insane. As a French citizen, I completed my national service in 1996. I was in one of the last contingents as it was abrogated in 1998. (1) Those with connections either did not do it or landed in cushy jobs. (2) Graduates were treated as cheap, educated labour by professional NCOs, most of whom did not even have the baccalaureate (3) Those graduates who expended their national service by 3 months for officer training were considered as worse than privates by professional NCOs. (4) That one year (it was 12 months at the time) delayed entry into the world of work. (5) who would want to serve for an institution that serves greedy politicians who wage illegal wars? There is no such thing as society anyway, who knows best than the Tories!
Naomi Smith 👏👏👏 thankyou for talking sense.
Legalise recreational cannabis in the UK.
Yet there are hundreds of people who have tried to join the army but have been turned away because of this company who are doing the medical assessments, it’s not always done correctly and I’ve witnessed a healthy young lad be turned away because of an illness he doesn’t even have. They carry out the assessments more like how they do pip assessments. You have people willing to risk life and limb for king and country yet not be allowed to sign up because of failed medical assessments. Then there’s young kids going to be forced into it. It isn’t right.
