    this is so great. Not only are your painting and drawing beautiful but you are also a fantastic teacher. This cleared up so much that I have been struggling with.
    On a side note I have been trying to teach myself via RUclips and many other websites how to draw. One day I came across an incredible sight, saved the site to my home screen, and began to use it exclusively to learn from, but I never thought to check for RUclips videos from that site. Today, in a frantic search for knowledge and understanding of how to paint with layers and glazes, I stumbled across this video. And wouldn't you know it the Creator this video and the Creator and teacher on my favorite website are one in the same. So grateful for you. thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world.

    I've looked for a lot of videos for doing under painting videos especially with acrylic and this is by far the best and most well explained video. I find that besides the advantage of setting your values with indirect painting it also give you a great "road map" to work thru your painting when you get to adding color. Amazing and very educational video. Thank you.

    I started painting with watercolor and for some unknown reason I’ve thought acrylics need too many supplies and I don’t know how to layer them and never cared too, but this method just sings to me!!! I often use grisaille& Brunei underpaintings in watercolor. Now I’m excited to try acrylics, bcuz this is the method I’ll be using.

    Thanks so much for this video!
    I was trained and self taught in art school, direct painting in sort of using a palette knife and using a brush to pull paint from the mixes.
    I could never find an artist demonstrating "color glazing" as you're showing here.

    I am new to painting and was told to glaze but wasn't sure what it is. Found this a great help in explaining. I used burnt umber and white for the underpainting. I will try glazing tomorrow using water.

    So a glaze functions similarly to watercolour? You just add a little bit of paint to a lot of glaze and mix it up into a thinned out substance? It would have been helpful to see the mixing process in action.

    you mentioned using carbon black is there a reason for this ,or can other blacks work,tfs

    • @thevirtualinstructor
      @thevirtualinstructor  8 лет назад +3

      Other blacks are fine too. Ivory black works well. You can also use Raw Umber and white for warmer undertones - or blues for cooler hues.

      You still going with it? If so Ive learned that no matter how much u practice if u continue making the same mistakes the whole time u don't get better, so if you notice for example ur images are out of proportion focus on that, for ur next pic, so look at the loomis method if it's for faces or something. Or if it's a shadow problem look at how to identify the values, Steve proko is good for this or drawpaint aswell they're both on RUclips!

  • @selftrue670

    Isn't there a limit to how diluted you can paint with acrylics? I understood that, at some point, the diluted paint would become unstable in terms of pigment and adherence.

    • @annansubuga8307
      @annansubuga8307 5 лет назад +1

      If ur using a medium then it's fine,since the medium is just a colourless binding agent, it's when ur diluting with thinner or water, that it becomes an issue

    Just so you are aware: grisaille is pronounced griz-eye, not grease-a-el. It is french in origin, and I think it is important for everyone to know how to pronounce it correctly.

    It would be more helpful to show the still life you are painting. Otherwise, we can’t observe the original source so it’s counter-productive.

    I thought glazes are supposed to be done with transparent colors. cadmiums are too opaque. crimson for that cherry. it looks too much like a tomato.

    • @thevirtualinstructor
      @thevirtualinstructor  5 лет назад +2

      Glazes do perform better with transparent colors, but you can use opaque colors too. Thanks for your opinion, but I like the red I used.
