The BEST glazing instructional video I've seen. Everyone else seem to "cut" throughout, giving (a novice like me) the impression that critical steps and transitions are being missed when that's not necessarily the case. Thanks for removing my doubts and making a seamless presentation!
Glad it helped you Rachel and I wish you much fun and the best results!! This method will work for 'simpler' projects such as the one I did or coloring larger areas. If you want to dive deeper into that like what to do when painting your own Mona Lisa there are a couple more steps to look into...especially more layering and such but if you are into oils have a look at my playlists, they are a bit more organized with many more realistic artworks.

Just getting back into the re-exploration of painting. While I only use acrylic at this time, much of what you taught today is still valid for that medium. Thank you for teaching in a way that is peaceful, concise and full of information. Glad I came across your channel! Keep up the wonderful work!
Thank you so much for your lovely words DeAnn!! And really glad you liked the video!! It works kind of similar with the acrylics when thinning with water or a medium. As a plus....it works quicker as you do not have the drying times :)

Now that's the secret for still-life painting! It doesn't really need a lot of paint colors at all! 😱✨ This greatly helped me and I would love to apply it for my project 😆✨ Thanks so much ❤️
glad you liked it!! And yes it does not need many colors. Actually it only needs a blue, red, yellow and white to mix all colors that you need. and glazing is a fun thing ^^
Hmmm, I thought I was looking for a demo of Grisaille but this is what I actually had in mind. I love this technique and have a still life all set up - this is what I'm going to use. Very rich and has a lot of appeal to me for reasons I don't quite understand. Thank you.
Thank you for your comment :) Well the Grisaille is basically the underpainting in monochromatic colors which I assume you know already. Here I wanted to show rather easy way to color a black and white painting helping those transitioning into color. If you have questions, please let me know and I will try to answer them :)

My pleasure. This all made also so little sense to me in the beginning and once I figured it out I decided to make this rather simple and by far not complete video for those starting as well. Glazing pretty quickly can sound scientific and here I think covered the very basics:)

Thank you for this video, Michael. I have been searching for a tutorial on glazing as the old masters did and your presentation was perfect! Very pleasant to watch and listen to. One of my favorite artists, Maxfield Parrish apparently painted several layers of glazes to create the vibrant colors he desired.
Excellent. I now better understand what glazing is. I like the black and white base with the color glazing on top. Absolutely beautiful painting! Thank you. And I subscribed. Hope to see more easy to understand instruction in your videos.😉

same here. If you like to see some more realism tutorials of mine you can head over to my playlist section and find them there. Judging the values works best when working on a toned canvas. I usually make a print of the original photo and make little color tests on the print to get as close to the color I need. One of the best oil painting teachers is the 'drawmixpaint' channel. I really like his way of teaching :)
This was a great demonstration on glazing. I have always wanted to try this technique to allow the values to really "pop" through on the piece. Great job.
Thank you! This morning I watched your presentation. It was truly remarkable. Your insight and wisdom helped me understand the layering techniques like no other. I would like to watch the one on the old masters.
Desiree Cromwell-Kraft thank you so much for your lovely comment Desiree ❤️❤️ very much appreciated :)) I plan to make a glazing tutorial as well for a realism portrait for those wanting to try that :) if you still have any questions unanswered about the glazing just let me know :))

Wow! I think you really made this look loke the old master's style yet you made it seem easy enough that I would like to try this method. I also love how you sped up the video and voiced over the explanation of steps. Thank you for sharing this! I look forward to watching more of your videos.:)

MKL GRM Fine Art Great!..I'm anxious to start this technique..I was just looking for information about what materials to use and HOW to use them in this technique.I am amateur, I want to show my talent in this too (so far I painted in watercolor and acrylic);)
magda markides don’t be anxious :) I was afraid of oils for so many years and now I love it way way more than painting in acrylics :) it is not that difficult just make sure each layer is dry completely before you glaze over it :) Glazing also works for acrylics if you want to try that there first :) You can do it :)) sure if it!!! 🤗🤗
MKL GRM Fine Art "make sure each layer is dry completely before you glaze over it :)'The very important info.from your video :)..Got it and keep it ! :) .I m afraid of oil too ,hahaha! ..I chose to experiment in acrylic and then switch to oil painting. It's difficult with mistakes in oil....so from now on I choose you as my teacher. I never had one.
magda markides welcome to my channel then 😅😅 and of course feel free to ask anything. Honestly oils is easier than acrylics :) especially when it comes to blending and the working time along with the opacity of oils. I really really love painting with them AND nothing will stop you in making your underpainting in acrylics and make the final layers in oils :)) Here is the tutorial playlist for my other realism stuff ruclips.net/p/PLz9Uk7TW2lvEaz5XVSE3YYcLPXNucT9ri
Just enjoyed your video & will be taking a look at the others. Been looking for ways to add depth to paintings I've done in the past, improve them as I learn more. I appreciate what you are doing.
my pleasure and thanks for leaving me a comment Michael. Most of times it is a question of having the darks dark enough. When I look at my earlier paintings it almost every time was the case...I was happy with the result but it would have been much more realistic when I were brave enough to add more darks :D
Thanks Susan :) As you watched the realism one...I also have plenty of abstract pouring and resin works...to not get flooded head over to the playlist section of my channel, it is a bit more sorted there :)
That was a great introduction, thank you! I'd very much like to learn more. I did my first glaze yesterday with my art teacher, and it worked!!! Fabulous! Henry Bedingfeld (UK)
Henry Bedingfeld hey Henry :)) first of all: congratulations :) glad that worked for you :) I plan to make another one on a portrait painting this summer going more into details. In the meantime I can recommend a channel called draw mix paint. Just type it in RUclips and you find him. He is a very instructive channel but he does that very well and clearly structured :) he covers a lot of topics about oil colors and painting in general :)
Charles Bell and by the way...my realism tutorials are bundled in a separate playlist via the playlist tab on my channel :) that makes it easier to find :)
this was just a small excursion into this technique as a beginners version. Of course when added layer over layer one can achieve even more realistic results :)
Thankyou so much for this ! I struggle very much with oil paint and realise now, why ! I so want to capture the depth in my work ...and overwork in colours and it is never as I wish. I am going to try liquid and be patient with drying times! Perhaps have two on the go ... Thankyou ! You explained this so clearly . Rosie
Glad the video was of some help Rosie!! it is one my oldest though ;) Glazing in fact is a great way to increase deapth in certain areas and also to correct values and tones in general. I am by far no master in it but hoped this video is kind of an easy approach to the entire topic :)
MKL GRM Fine Art I have had such a great day painting today ! Yesterday I did a tonal underpainting using Liquin , ( it’s of an egg in a turquoise tin bowl ) today I applied a thin ( ish)! Layer of transparent colour. And , it’s looking good 😊👍🏻 tomorrow I will continue . Is there away of sending a photo ?? Rosie 😊

I usually make a print of the original photo and make little color tests on the print to get as close to the color I need.
One of the best oil painting teachers is the 'drawmixpaint' channel. I really like his way of teaching :)
I loved your technique. Thanks for sharing.
Amna Mohamed thanks dir watching Amna ❤️❤️
This was a great demonstration on glazing. I have always wanted to try this technique to allow the values to really "pop" through on the piece. Great job.
Thanks so much Jeff and give it a try!! I wished I knew this when I stepped into colors...this would have made my life easier back then :D
Wonderful tutorial! I’d love to learn more about this technique. Thank you so much for sharing the video.
thank you for watching and leaving me a sweet comment :) So far this is the only video with this method that I have but when you watch my playlist - I have a couple more realism drawing and painting videos there organized :)
Thank you for this video. Very interesting and informative.
Thanks for watching Susan :))
Just what I was looking for, thank you so much.I am doing a portrait at the moment, and will now go ahead with confidence. ❤️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you!! I have just uploaded a new video planning a step by step group project on painting...if you like...join in or follow along the videos once they are uploaded :)
Thanks for the demonstration. I find it very interesting. I hope to see more demos and thank you for sharing!
marujita411 thank you for watching :)))
Wow! I think you really made this look loke the old master's style yet you made it seem easy enough that I would like to try this method. I also love how you sped up the video and voiced over the explanation of steps. Thank you for sharing this! I look forward to watching more of your videos.:)
deejo 2 glad you liked it and even better that you got inspired :) I have a lot of abstracts also on my channel but if you are into the realism artwork it is easiest go to my playlist section, I have bundled them there :)
Thank you very much for this demo...easy to understand the technique...waiting for more.Good job!..Keep doing it!
magda markides thank you Magda :) I do have a separate playlist with my realism paintings and drawings if you want to check this one out. I also plan to do more of these glazing demonstrations in the future :)
MKL GRM Fine Art Great!..I'm anxious to start this technique..I was just looking for information about what materials to use and HOW to use them in this technique.I am amateur, I want to show my talent in this too (so far I painted in watercolor and acrylic);)
magda markides don’t be anxious :) I was afraid of oils for so many years and now I love it way way more than painting in acrylics :) it is not that difficult just make sure each layer is dry completely before you glaze over it :)
Glazing also works for acrylics if you want to try that there first :)
You can do it :)) sure if it!!!
I really really love painting with them AND nothing will stop you in making your underpainting in acrylics and make the final layers in oils :))
Here is the tutorial playlist for my other realism stuff

Just enjoyed your video & will be taking a look at the others. Been looking for ways to add depth to paintings I've done in the past, improve them as I learn more. I appreciate what you are doing.
my pleasure and thanks for leaving me a comment Michael. Most of times it is a question of having the darks dark enough. When I look at my earlier paintings it almost every time was the case...I was happy with the result but it would have been much more realistic when I were brave enough to add more darks :D
Ah, I can see why you suggested this for my project! I'll give this a try on the background for my dragon! Thank you so much for the tip! ♡
;)
I really enjoyed your video and look forward to watching more.
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL TECHNIQUE ....THANKS 4 SHARING....nOW I UNDERSTAND THE TERM ABOUT GLAZING, THIS IS AMAZING...DANKESCHOEN:)
my pleasure :))
You are a great teacher Michael. Thank you
Good one. I’d love to see your old master techniques!
Great tutorial, love glazing you make it very fun
And fun it is Rosa :) Thanks for wazching and glad you liked it!!
Wonderful teaching, you really have a great way for explaining the technique, looking forward to more training.!
Thank you so much Charles!! Very much appreciated :)))
Charles Bell and by the way...my realism tutorials are bundled in a separate playlist via the playlist tab on my channel :) that makes it easier to find :)
This is wonderful...thank you so much...I very much wanted to learn glazing.
this was just a small excursion into this technique as a beginners version. Of course when added layer over layer one can achieve even more realistic results :)
Very nice, I will definitely try the technique. Thanks
Thank you for this demonstration it really simplified the technique!
thanks for watching :))
This is EXACTLY what I needed to see - thank you!

The luminosity created through glazing is amazing..thank you for this brilliant video
Brilliant...youre a real master painter...gracias
thanks so much :)) Glad you liked the glazing video :)
Rosie 😊
Wayne & Rosie Sharman well if you have Instagram you can text me there. Or on Facebook but i am not there much often :) instsgram is quicker. All my social media links are in the video description:)
