The underpainting adds a depth and richness that the other painting lacks. Excellent video presentation. You've made me a true believer. Thank you for the insight.
I have never been to art school and all of my endeavors have been based on the tutorials available on RUclips. This video has explained succinctly the importance of doing an underpainting. I have done watercolor, oil pastel and acrylic. Now I am venturing into oil paints and this has to be one of the most useful videos in terms of technical content for a beginner like me. Thank you so much.
Your under painting version is much more beautiful but I also feel that you favored it throughout the process. There are artist like David Leffel, Jeff Legg, Sherry McGraw and so many others that paint in a beautiful way and achieve spectacular results without going through the under painting process. That is one of the wonderful things about art, painting, we all do it our own way and hopefully find a way to achieve our goal and vision.
I absolutely agree wholeheartedly. There’s more than one way there are many many ways. This works well for me and it’s good to share that. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for commenting it’s appreciated.
Excellent video! I’m trying the underpainting method now on a couple of paintings, and this is very helpful. Thank you for being so generous with your time and knowledge 👍🏼👍🏼
Tim, You talk about "going through the underpainting process" as if it were onerous. It is easier, largely separating considerations of value and colour and the results can be truly beautiful. It also saves on expensive pigments and achieves a beautiful deep glowing colour. I am about to tackle to tackle my version of Klimt's Woman in Gold with acrylic underpainting, size 24x36 inches, substituting my wife's face (because she asked me) in indirect method with oil glazes. The relief swirls will be done in acrylic from a syringe and needle of the type used to refill ink cartridges before overpainting with metallic gold. Have done that before - it works. The same method can be used for jewels and jewellery. Have yet to decide upon acrylic/oil for the rest of the painting. Acrylic might be easier but oils would give a better painting.
I know some artists don’t like doing an underpainting because they feel the colours are more vibrant when painted straight on a white canvas and you can see that’s true here. I think underpaintings lend well for some paintings and not so much for others. It all depends on what you’re painting! I do them sometimes and not at other times 😌 great video!
Absolutely. It’s great to see this comparison so people can decide. I like to mix things up so do different techniques BUT I do always come back to underpainting for pets/portrait & still life I just love the look. Thanks for commenting and glad you enjoyed it.
As a new painter, this demonstration was immensely valuable for demonstrating how to apply an under-painting and the reason why an under-painting is valuable. The difference between the two paintings is striking.
Both versions are splendid! The visible difference is in the mood that underpainting makes. If trying to imitate the old master's style, the underpainting seems more appropriate. If we want a more modern or faster approach, the bright clear colors ( colours) of the direct method is beautiful too.
I have been painting for a good few years now but this is the first demonstration I have seen not only showing under painting but comparing results. Extremely useful. Will be giving it a try at art club tomorrow. Much appreciated.
Tonal values are so important that they can make or break a painting. I love your underpainting techniques and tools, to establish tonal values. I like both images, and would like to try both in a landscape, where I will try the underpainting areas in the foreground sections for "body", and no underpainting in the far background aspects, where tonal values are much less apparent/evident, (more flat, lighter and less detailed) to enhance a sense of depth/distance. Thanks so much, I loved this. The oiling out with glazing is awesome to know about.
What a great way to show and teach the underpainting method. You convinced me that this is how artists I know get the classical look of the masters. I know it is never too late to learn. I am still working on watercolor painting and enjoy that medium, but this has convinced me to watch you, learn and hopefully will get the courage to expirence oil painting with underpainting. Thank you so much for the enlightment. Nancy L, Maine USA
Thank you for your expertise. You make the ideas approachable for novices. Would underpainting work with watercolor? I'm just learning and watercolor feels safer than oil, but one day.....😃@@MazArtStudio
I like watercolor underpinning, than acrylic and finally water mixable oil. I get all the strength of these mediums. Canvas must be prepped w home-made watercolor ground. Watercolor layer, fix it. Than mid range colors w acrylic first lean w watermixable oil medium and water mix1 to 10.1 part medium, 10 part water.Golden acrylic play beautifully with this mix. Dries within hours to a day. And finally, the wamo oil paint. Some parts just medium over the watercolor or acrylic layers. The final result is a truly deep 3D painting. I know this is lots of work, but the result is well worth it.
Thanks to you after years of trying to understand what an underpainting does I now I can see the difference and understand more what my paintings lack to be more effective!! Thank you so much for this tutorial!
love this it not only teaches about underpainting it is teaching me where and how to hold the brushes for different strokes and thicknesses as i feel i have always been to heavy with the paint. when i can get back to painting i am going to practice the way you hold your brushes and how far up or down the brush you hold them. thanks a million.
Watching you paint I learned a lot. I have been so afraid to use oils, tho I want to. You showed me ways for it not to be overwhelming. I liked both versions of the painting. One seemed the underpaid Ted one seemed heavier than the other, and of course more structured. I had never come across so clear a teaching of underpainting. I like the way you paint and teach. Thanks.
You are my Angel! At last, an artist tells me/shows me how to do the underpainting. I'm so grateful to you - waited 71 year's and I've finally got it. Thank you.
I haven’t painted with oils in a few years and I’m jumping back in this week. I was stoked when this video randomly crossed my feed. I needed to get “back to basics” and admittedly never heard of underpainting with burnt umber before. It’s going really well! Thank you for such a great video! It’s great for beginners and for folks who have oil painting experience but need a refresher, or even to have their minds changed on “to underpaint or not to underpaint!” So again, HUGE THANKS!

Wow! This is such a great exercise. I love the idea of seeing the going-that-extra-mile-in-the-preparation-stages manifesting in such an artistically rich way. Yes, your pear without the underpainting is beautiful. But your pear with the underpainting is luscious and almost holy. There is an unspoken connection, comfort and peace than comes to the soul when it's touched by the brilliance of an artist's full circle process. Thank you for sharing these moments, broken down into super understandable bite-sized chunks. And thank you for all the bonus material in the links within your description box. Huge bonus!!
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this tutorial! As a beginner painter, I have to admit I prefer the undercoated one. IMHO. You are the first one I have found on RUclips who takes the time to actually teach each step of the way in a fashion that we can keep up with! Otherwise, it's really no use to us as far as helping us to learn the who's and what's, where's and how's! Thank you!💕
I've been an artist for years but never tried oil paints. I went off another youtuber's guide who essentially only teaches alla prima, and I found it to be so extremely frustrating and difficult. The method you've showcased has been so much more satisfying and less frustrating! Thank you.
I have been looking for a video on this for several weeks. I didn’t really understand why it was important to do an underpainting. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain and show the difference.
Finally a tutorial that really describes well how you put on the colour to an underpainting! I couldn’t understand how to put on colours and not work with many glazing layers. Well done!
So nice to have a very detailed instructional video again on here. The underpainting technique is something I had never heard of before I discovered you. Love it. Thanks x
This is an exceptionally well made and informative video. My thanks for sharing it. The richness and depth the underpainting is remarkable. I shall certainly give this method a try.
I am amazed by the difference the underpainting makes. I also love that you use such thin layers - a very appealing approach for me. I am a pastel painter just venturing in to oils and always use very thin layers to build up the painting. In fact, yesterday I made my first oil painting - very rudimentary - so I can't wait to find an approach that works for me.
this has definitely helped me see the differences with underpainting! thank you for this in-depth explanation, i’ve definitely learnt from it and will apply some of these fantastic techniques :)
Thank you for this lesson. I have never used underpainting but I will now in the next one. I am 85 years old and my whole life worked as an free lance illustrator with Acryl and now for 15 years with oil mainly portraits. I had several exhibitions with success. Greetings from Hungary. Jan ten Hove
Wonderful! I am so glad you found it useful - its always nice to know that with art we can continue to learn new things - I still do every day. wishing you lots of luck with your next portrait
What a great tutorial. Makes it look so very simple & for me, I do like the under painted style. However, I am surprised at the look you can get even without it. I can say there might be rare times I might want to try a painting without it. Thanks for such a great demonstration, clearly done. Lovely studies!
Absolutely spot on!! I love underpainting but I also love painting without it too. I tend to use underpainting for pet portrait and portraits when I want to be more exact of for something classical like a still life. But I love painting wet into wet (alla prima) too. It’s great to change things up and have these tools in our tool kit right ? Thank you for your comments they are truly appreciated 🥰
I really appreciate your style. I could never understand the reason for a blobbed on underpainting that some artists use. I understand now how an underpainting with your style can enhance a painting! Thank you for showing me how to apply an underpainting. You are very thorough in your explanations, and I appreciate that very much.
I have never tried the underpainting with the tones. What a difference. I agree that it looks much better with the underpainting. I will be trying that next time I paint. Thanks for the tips.
This is so so relevant & full of amazing information for all beginner & intermediate artists. Just love how U did this & I know what was involved. Really good job. Gary 😘
Thank you so much madam.. it was a great learning. I am learning from youtube tutorials and been meaning to explore underpainting and its importance. This lesson explained it very well. Thanks again.
Thank you for this fantastic tutorial! To be fair to the poor no underpaint pair, if you were painting it in one go (alla prima?) you would mix the colour differently to have more like tonal value. But I’ve always loved doing washed with acrylic but have never figured out how to do it with oil so thanks! The underpainted pair really does have a nice translucent quality in the skin that just I don’t know could be achieved with straight up colour matching
I totally agree alla prima would be done differently but mostly this was to show how simple underpainting can be and what a difference it can make. I’m glad you enjoyed the lesson (I’ve a few alla prima on my channel which is an exciting way to paint but I do love me some underpainting ☺️)
@@MazArtStudio I finally got around to trying the technique 🤸♀️ Did I listen to that part about using fixative on my pain stakingly enlarged pencil drawing (I used a grid and spent a whole evening on it) …. Nope I figured I’d still be able to faintly make it out underneath. I cannot believe that it COMPLETELY Dissolved my pencil 😂 so like turns out there was an ala prima element to the painting anyway because I didn’t have the patience to start over. It’s just my technique test painting not my one portrait that I want to get done so I can enter it into a competition so it’s ok :) I’m hoping I didn’t abuse my treated paper canvas too much by erasing and going over certain spots too often - think I might have but that’s another reason I’m glad this is a test piece. I swear if the oil gets through and eats the paper I might call it quits and just use acrylic - at least for the tonal layer anyway Thanks again!
The underpainting tutorial is just amazing. I haven’t painted for over twenty years, and have been afraid to start again. I think this method will help greatly. Thanks, JIM
Thank you for your generous free teaching. You have skill. It seems to me that an underpainting or at least a toned canvas provide a unifying of the different areas of color and also provide temperature variation within an area of color.
Just came across this video and want to let you know my appreciation for showing the effects on underpainting or not. Very helpful. And to add, great skills you have. Beautiful.
I love both paintings. I suppose by seeing them in isolation, one would never be able to say which is better. Even when comparing them it will take a while to actually decide which is better. Thank you for sharing ❤
You are welcome. There’s no right or wrong you are correct it’s all personal interpretation. I do think underpainting in general helps beginners and breaks the process down
I loved the one with the undercover it gives it depth softness it's so beautiful the other do as a quick painting but do the undercoat well it's worth the time
I so enjoy watching and listening to your wonderful instructions. The under painting is remarkable in its depth and strength. Worth every effort! Thank you!
Thank you so much. Underpainting definitely has more depth and this is so useful to me as a beginner of about 18 months. Thank you so much for showing what colours you use as some online tutorials do not give exact colours and talk only about lights and darks. I will be watch8ing all your tutorials👏👏
That was VERY helpful. I've been totally confused about underpainting and you clarified it greatly. The side-by-side demonstration was eye-opening. Thank you!
Wonderful tutorial! I can see benefits to both sides. The shape and structure is so much better with the under painting but the colors seem to pop more without. I guess it depends on what you are painting. Thank you for your help!

I like to use under paining colors (usually a red/brown) for anything where I don't have a sky.
Some artists use both methods in their painting but I do think you get more texture and transparency in paintings with an under painting.

Thanks again!
Underpainting is clearly a very good technique to begin a painting. The result is far too much stronger and lively!!
Yes indeed it does give a strong and vibrant result. Glad you enjoyed the lesson
The underpainting tutorial is just amazing. I haven’t painted for over twenty years, and have been afraid to start again. I think this method will help greatly. Thanks, JIM
You are so welcome!🤗
those dry surface noises are making me cry lol
I am brand new to oil painting. (from watercolor) Looking through different beginner techniques. This video is very informative! Glad I found you.
Glad it was helpful!
I agree the underpainted work has more depth and strength. Thank you for this demonstration.
You are so welcome!
Thank you for your generous free teaching. You have skill. It seems to me that an underpainting or at least a toned canvas provide a unifying of the different areas of color and also provide temperature variation within an area of color.
Thank you very much!
Just came across this video and want to let you know my appreciation for showing the effects on underpainting or not. Very helpful. And to add, great skills you have. Beautiful.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for the comment ☺️
Thank you so much for the excellent tutorial on underpainting...I really enjoyed your relaxed and informative presentation!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I recently started doing under paintings and I prefer it. I can focus on value first and then later on color. Much easier. Thank you.
You are welcome 🤗
It’s so much richer with the underpainting!
Thank you ☺️
very interesting work. Thank you for the explicit and comparative demo!
You are welcome!
Absolutely lovely!! I think the under painting is much strong and more believable!
Thanks so much 😊
I love both paintings. I suppose by seeing them in isolation, one would never be able to say which is better. Even when comparing them it will take a while to actually decide which is better.
Thank you for sharing ❤
You are welcome. There’s no right or wrong you are correct it’s all personal interpretation. I do think underpainting in general helps beginners and breaks the process down
Best underpainting demo I've seen. Thanks.
Thank you
Great demo. Useful to see how much paint to mix and apply, color string mixing, underpainting comparison....and I'm only halfway through so far.
Glad it was helpful!
I am taking a class at a local university and this has clarified the whole process. I appreciate the new non-toxic version now available as well

Amazing how you make your ‘chain’ of colours…fantastic idea…Appreciate your sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it. I like to “puddle “ paint a lot and work with these strings from that one puddle.
This is amazing! Thank you for showing it! I am convinced!

Thanks so much. ☺️
Thank you so much. Underpainting definitely has more depth and this is so useful to me as a beginner of about 18 months. Thank you so much for showing what colours you use as some online tutorials do not give exact colours and talk only about lights and darks. I will be watch8ing all your tutorials👏👏
Glad it was helpful!
I am inspired to try the under-painting technique. Thank you for the detailed and patiently rendered video. Kudos.

You are absolutly right ! Underpaining looks better ! Thank you very much for your tutorial.
You are welcome 🤗
Thanks for sharing of your underpainting process , especially as a beginner having small room I was looking for non-odor medium.
Glad it was helpful!
Wonderful tutorial! I can see benefits to both sides. The shape and structure is so much better with the under painting but the colors seem to pop more without. I guess it depends on what you are painting. Thank you for your help!
Yes it’s a personal preference definitely!
Thank you! I wish this info was taught to me years ago… Thank you for explaining “why,” and not just “how.”
Glad you enjoyed it
