Although glazes are usually used to enhance areas, they can also be used to dull down areas. For example - turn a bright blue sky into an evening sky?....use an orange glaze over the blue to slightly darken the blue and desaturate it.
Thank you! I've inherited a lot of random acrylic paints and mediums from Dad when he died. I have never painted in acrylics and am scared of them! So I will take heart and watch some of your videos and see if I can work out how to use them. Today I found some glaze mediums and had no idea. Now I do.
I've heard of glazing before but this demo really helped me understand the application of the technique. It definitely adds a depth and contrast to the painting. I guess the danger is picking the wrong colour to glaze with. Practice and play music be the answer!
Very informative video, Richard. And, beautiful examples of your work. Just a suggestion: If possible, maybe add a "love it button", for those people who didn't know how to do what you show them and are super glad to learn how to accomplish the techniques. That said, Cheers Mate! Be safe.
Excellent presentation...I'm an oil painter who's finishing his first acrylic painting... I've been washing a great deal but this glazing technique is a game changer for me...
What a great tutorial! I think I’ve used way too much medium when I’ve tried to glaze & that’s why it’s never really been very successful. Thank you so much 😊
Thank you for sharing this video. I was wondering, when you add the aliz crim with the glaze varnish medium, is the aliz crim a transparent color? Also, does the glaze varnish medium have a strong odor (like regular varnish)? I have used spray varnish on my completed acrylic paintings before and the smell is awful, even when doing it outdoors. lol Also: After you use the varnish glaze, can you then go over it with more acrylic paint? Or will this cause peeling?
Newbie. Thx for the simplicity of the video. Very useful info. I’m a watercolorist, usually. Think I’ll grab some highly pigmented acrylics. Have you ever tried to use only transparent with a wet brush for an entire painting? Lol.. Get that water color look? Thx.
This really helped me today, just what I needed, thank you! Your work is beautiful and the difference the glaze makes is striking to me - I would never not do it on pieces like this (:
Thank u so much for sharing your glazing techniques...it was really really insightful and an amazing tip... i really needed this help with my art works! 🥰♥️♥️👍🏻
Can you explain why you used red to darken? Does the color you glaze with depend on the color you're painting over? Or do you always use red to darken no matter what is under the glazing?
Such a helpful video. Can i ask what is the difference in using Glazing Medium and the Gloss and Varnish Medium you used for this. I have both products but it one better than the other? Thanks
Glazing medium has more retarder and leveling agents added to it, this improves working time and helps reduce brushstrokes as they tend to flatten out. The finish, if you are using the correct brush and amount of paint, will yield similar results. If you are working on very large canvasses probably using glazing medium would allow better edge transitions (where you last left off)
Fantastic as usual Richard, well done! Have you done a tut on the painting of the dunes (@10:00). Would love to see the process. Some palette knife used? Blessings, Louis.
It’s a mid grey plastic panel about 4mm thick. It came with my soltek easel but any glass/plastic dealer could make you one to suit. Or simply paint the underside of a glass sheet grey. (Sand the edges smooth).
May i ask...using a glaze, is it like putting a varnish over the top? Or is it to add/intensify areas of the painting...does it add a sheen? So would it make the area added shiny? Would you need to do the whole painting? Or can u do just a small area?
i wonder.. have you tried with synthetic oil like cleaned and cooked transfat? i also heard they are making the acrylic transparent lack with 12-24 hours dry out time. maybe you can try it too?
@@RichardRobinsonStudio Hello Richard, appreciate the demo. I'm surprised that you use this varnish for glazing. Wouldn't you use a gloss medium when glazing and then add the varnish to the whole painting when dry? If you could explain why you use the varnish to glaze, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
Daniel Wetzel as far as I know it doesn’t matter. It’s all acrylic which is very flexible and doesn’t have the same cracking problems as oils. For oils I’d use walnut oil or liquin for glazing, and wait a good amount of time before glazing.
Why not just glaze with thinned with water, what's the disadvantage? And what do you do to finish (varnish) an acrylic painting if one want matt finish?

Beautiful paintings and a straightforward lesson on glazing. Thanks!
What a gem u are! I never would have thought of that! I only wish my art was as beautiful to begin with! Gorgeous painting! My eyes are so happy!

Beautiful. Your paintings, teaching style, advice, eyes.... haha. Thank you Richard.
Thank you so much for this demo! As a beginner I’ve been looking for someone to explain this process!

Very nice, helpful! Thank you! Beautiful work.
Thanks Richard. I have many paintings that need glazing. But always worried about what is the best product to use. Very nice painting to

Just in time to use on a beach scene I’m painting now! Thanks
Thanks! U r generous. How can I push back bright color? A opaque paint & glaze medium?
Thank you so much
Excellent, practical, Thank you
Lovely painting too
Good video. Have you ever heard of painting in black and white first, and then glazing in colour?
Excellent!!! Thank you!
Thanks again, Richard. Always useful information delivered in an understandable, friendly way.
Wow this is really cool, thanks for sharing. It's the small tips which make for amazing art.
This is GREAT!! Thank you
Great, thank you so much😻
Amazing video, thank you for putting in the time and effort to show us 🙏🏻
Love your instructions and your honesty. This helps me, can I use with abstract art?
Very helpful thank you!
Thank you...very clearly + concisely explained.
Wish I’d seen this before I put protective varnish on a couple of my favourite paintings. Is it too late?
Thanks.
Thanks for the tips...do you cover the rest of the painting with glaze ? Or leave it without?
beautiful.....always love to learn new techniques!!! Thank you!!
Hello Richard, we have to glaze with water medium rather than varnish, have you created this as a video. We used charcoal for the drawing.
So beautiful!!!!
Do you varnish the whole thing after everything drys with gloss varnish ?
Thank you

idk if anyone will answer since this was made years ago, but does it have to be a gloss varnish? will a matte one work ok?
Great demo, watched a few others but yours shows all the tips, love it thank you.

Great video Kiwi ! many thanks for the help keep those videos coming .
So helpful, and I love your art. Interestingly, your name is the same as my dad was named. Thank you
Great tutorial, and lovely paintings! Are most of your works this small?
just each side or the whole painting and how do you know the right color paint to use....
Wow that’s clever !
I subscribed!
great video.thanks. do you prefer acrylics or oils
Painterly Brushes bit of both.
Nice!❤️
Thank you
Wow im an idiot i have a whole bottle just laying there thanks mate😎
Thank you for information. Great paintings. Just wonder: Did you use gloss medium with the colours instead of glazing medium?
Yes that was gloss medium. Works the same as glazing medium.

can i use water instead of medium
Can you roll the canvas after it was glazed? Will it crack?
Is that a gray Mat that you use to blend your paints? What exactly is it and where do I get a large one like that? Thank You! Dawn

Hi , did you Glaze on a oil painting or acrylic painting?
I like to glaze over acrylic with oil colours. Just find theres a tad more pop ! Thanx for the video Richard.
You can make Acrylics pop the same as Oils, you just need to correctly varnish it after it has cured.
Great thank you

Have you considered using an actual glazing medium? It’s much smoother.

Loved the color, what did you call that white transparent acrylic sir?
Thanks, that's Gloss Medium Varnish by Atelier.
