His playing and tone on Headmaster Ritual are jaw droppingly good. Holy crap. It sounds just like the album, and it's not easy singing and playing that at the same time. I'm so glad Johnny is getting some recognition these days. His playing is absolutely legendary.
Johnny Marr is the best! I've spent the past 35 years OBSESSED with the Smiths and his solo projects as well as various collaboration projects. He is such a down to earth guy, almost like he's not aware that he is a guitar God. I never get tired of the melodic unique playing style. Truly one of a kind!
Johnny Marr is my hero, a well balanced artist and humble human being ....but super kudos to the host ..respectful and well thought out questions Johnny never looked bored. Really enjoyed this
'The headmaster ritual' for sure is one of the best songs that have ever been written. I've been listening to it for almost forty years now and it has never lost its power. 💥
Saw him play a show in May 2019 in Huntington, NY. My buddy is a huge Smiths fan so we went for his birthday. Got there a bit early so we could be next to the stage. He played an awesome show. Afterwards, we went around to the back of the venue and there were a couple of people waiting. He came out and spent a lot of time taking pictures and talking with everybody. My buddy got to tell Johnny that he was the inspiration for his learning the guitar. He signed our albums too. Awesome, down to Earth dude.
Not only can I listen to Johnny play guitar constantly, I could listen to him talk. He's so fascinating. Love his outlook. Great performance & interview! Thank you.
Give his memoir/autobiography a read if you ever are looking, set the boy free. It’s FANTASTIC insightful witty behind the scenes of his projects it’s awesome
That version of The Headmaster Ritual though... My favourite Smiths song and always will be. The performance of it here is just sublime. I can't stop watching it!
Great host. Intelligent , warm and with a real love for the music. I can tell Johnny Marr enjoyed the interview and the genuine appreciation she had for his work .Cheryl Waters . Must check out more of her work on this show and with other artists. “Call the Comet” is one of the best albums of the last year.
Johnny was the heart and soul of the Smiths. His music carries on the legacy. What makes him and his band unique is that their music has adjusted to the times, and sounds better than anything else out there.
I love Morrissey's Viva hate , Bona drag And Kill Uncle Albums and Of course The Smiths All albums But I have to admit I'm very happy for Marr after all this time he is getting his just dues He deserves it He is a one of a kind brilliant music composer. The best.
I really like listening to Johnny talk about his music and background. Always refreshing hearing a world class musician like Johnny give insight into his life and music. Great stuff.
This is such a fantastic interview! Cheryl obviously knows her stuff, and it's adorable to watch her intelligently fangirl Marr. He seems quite impressed with her level of knowledge and her appreciation for his amazing art. As far as Marr goes, he comes across as such a relatable and nice guy - I am totally head over heels after watching him in this exchange. Thank you KEXP!
What a fantastic performance - and I say again, its presenters like Cheryl Waters that make things like this work. You cannot put a price on a well informed, well researched and clearly interested presenter. I live in the UK but thanks to KEXP for putting together a great piece of work. Thats how you do it.
I was lucking enough to get in to this show with my friend. We were three feet behind him for the whole interview and performance. It was a religious experience I love this guy and all of his bands so much❤️very special day thank you KEXP and Johnny Fucking Marr❤️
I had the privilege of seeing Johnny Marr and the other amazing musicians that make up his band in Belfast a few days ago, they totally rocked the Ulster hall xx
First time i heard Johnny in my life i got here by listening to another guitar players infuances and one of his was Johhny Marr . Iam glad i looked him up firstly i grew up in the 80s and his music has that sound and forgive me but while i closed my eyes and listend to him i heard some David Bowie es vibe, sound kind of feeling . Well iam newest fan at age 50 but like he said being a fan and i have to agree its totally normal . Today i have to drive for about 6 hours on the freeway so i guess ill have enough time for his great music ! Thanx ....
As always a quality session aired by KEXP. You could see how special it was for the presenter Cheryl Waters. A great performance (and wonderful interview too) by Johnny and his band. I have seen him twice this year in Dublin (and got the chance to meet the man, and the legend too), as he was in Athy in Kildare, Ireland for the unveiling of a plaque in tribute to him (as his parents are from Athy). He is such a sincere, and humble artist.
I came to this video after watching Johnny Marr play Rory Gallagher's guitar. Great quality video, lighting and audio recording. Great interview too. Thanks. Appreciated.
Excellent performance and interview. Johnny keeps pushing his sound and the new LP is very creative. Thx KEXP for posting this performance. :-) thanks to Cheryl for asking great questions too.
This is the new smiths as far as I'm concerned. Why see Morrissey play with a bunch of hacks when Johnny can sing as well and still be Johnny? What a crackin' band - cheers fellas
Watching this for the 3rd time since Friday........great songs, great band, great performance......and of course the lovely Cheryl using her extensive knowledge to ask the right questions
Johnny is such a unique talent and sound, I’m so happy that he’s been able to find a niche for himself. I also love his band, they’re so tight, it”s hard to think of Johnny Marr nowadays without also thinking of his bandmates. Killer EBow.
This is marvelous. I love how his music is rooted in the 80s sound, but not at all stuck in it. The sound is both current and reminiscent at the same time. Wonderful stuff. Hasn't left the #1 tray of my CD player in the car since I got it.
Saw him live recently fantastic show and really tight band. He is a kickass musician loved him for over 30 years. Hope he manages another 30! Plus Cheryl is a great interviewer
I’m so grateful Johnny Marr and his band, came to Buffalo New York, he was phenomenal. I’ve been to a lot of gigs in my time but this was the best! Thank you 🙏 Johnny Marr you are a Legend! Thank you so much for coming to Buffalo NY. Top Night! (What a performance, what passion still after all those years) much, much, much respect forever, I will never forget!
Love KEXP so much, if you ever have him back, could you just film what his left hand is doing for the whole fifty minutes? Thanks, from someone who plays guitar!
It's mostly what he does with his right hand that gives it the sound I think! The picking, rhythm and the tremolo. The chords are fairly standard with minus the flourishes
Johnny Mahr is the best guitarist! When I first heard The Smiths 1985 I was hooked. I went to see The Smiths perform at Irvine Meadows (Orange County, California) for The Meat is Murder Tour. Mahrs music took me to another world. Mahrs sound is like no other!
Johnny Marr continues to prove he’s a genius … and was the backbone and the John Lennon of The Smiths his song “Hello” and now this is “Somewhere” is pretty much as good as any Smith’s song…. without the angst from Morrissey ….I put him up there a few notches below Brian Wilson…
love wen you said, wen playing live is the now!! and to plug a guitar to a whole bunch off speakers is one off the greatesst blessings!! and yes art and music are love and unity!! SAVE ART Be Kind® ✨✨✨ love you
I do love Johnny. In the case of this set I particularly loved the fact that he slipped an ebow out of his jacket pocket, played the end solo, and quietly slipped in back into his pocket at the end. Brilliant.
This was a great performance AND interview. She always asks interesting questions and stays engaged with the artist and doesn’t over talk whoever is there.
Can't really say that i have ever been a big fan of The smiths, but for some reason, all this Johnny Marr stuff is blowing me away. This band sound so great.
Tsunemi I think it’s Morrissey’s voice. Lol. If Johnny sang instead, I’d probably love all of their songs in their entirety. He doesn’t have that annoying whiny twinge to his voice that Morrissey does. Plus, he’s just a dope musician who seems to be humble even in his accomplishments.
Never ceases to amaze me that he wrote another there is a light that never goes out, that hi hello track is absolutely beautiful and stands on par with the best the Smith's ever composed
"I am very fortunate for a living I plug my guitar into a bunch of loud speakers and people want to listen"
Johnny Marr
What a humble statement 👏
A wonderful musician. Have always enjoyed his music.
He's some musician....

His playing is great not going to dispute that, but as a smiths fan I’d like it if he sung the song like the album and not the second verse twice 😂
The Headmaster Ritual is a serious tune.
Yes. And so fun to play (even if I can't make it sound like Johnny!)

One of my favourites too. Yes, totally agree, sounded great.
Marr is like the crown prince of indie music, or at least a duke; Cheryl must be inwardly ecstatic.
I think she's pretty starstruck but you'd barely tell, she's such a pro. Can't blame her in the slightest - I'd be jelly.
I agree dude, hes been making subgenre music since the early 80's. He has such an established style that evolves in a good way.
He’s like the godfather of indie lol
and also the amoeba of groove.
he's the headmaster ;)
