      busi magen That’s completely beyond the point and irrelevant. This video is not an advanced Mandarin pronunciation lesson, nor does it even feature Chinese phonemes on the more complicated side, for that matter. There is no way that most of the world, which of course contains Indo-European speakers, cannot pronounce the “ts” phoneme as it is pronounced in the name Cao Cao-not “kao kao”, not “tao tao”, but “tsao tsao”. It is one of the most common phonemes in all languages. That’s an example of bad pronunciation that literally has no excuse. Any half-assed Google search for the right pronunciation should have prompted you to pronounce it competently if not fluently. Instead, from the way the narrator pronounced it, he almost had to have gone out of his way to purposefully learn a wrong pronunciation to get it wrong so bad-that, or, as I suspect in most cases with most Western narrators, he was simply too lazy and used the excuse of “hard language to pronounce”.

    Why does Liu Bei hold a halberd? I think you may have mistaken him for Lu Bu. In the novel, Liu Bei uses a pair of long swords.
    Technically, Cao acted with or I would even say under Yuan Shao after the coalition for the quelling of the Black Mountain Bandits, against Yuan Shu and Gongsun Zan. Only when he gained the control over the imperial court, Cao goes on his separate way from Yuan Shao, but even then he had to appease him by giving him a higher court rank than his.

      Well, if we're talking about the actual history, below is something from the South Song Dynasty Annotations to the Records of the Three Kingdoms, 《云别传》Records on Zhao Yun.
      During the battle of Changban, when Zhao Yun charged into the Wei army, the Records on Zhao Yun had this to say: 先主之败,有人言云已北去者,先主以手戟擿之曰:子龙不弃我走也! The late lord retreated, and when someone said Yun has went North (gone over to Wei's side), the late lord threw his hand-halberd at the speaker, saying: "Zi Long will not leave me!".
      The hand halberd was about the same size as a one-handed Norse battle axe, usable for both close combat and throwing. Liu Bei, however, like most commanders, would've most likely used a spear or a full-sized halberd on the battlefield. He would've definitely had a sword, but just as a symbol of status, as Chinese swords (jian) were rarely used practically on the battlefield.
      (Apologies for blabbing and intruding on your notifications two years late to the party)

  • @ribiagio98
    @ribiagio98 2 года назад +16

    Liu Bei wasn't a peasant at all, he was son and grandson to 2 governors and his uncle was rich enough to send him to "university".
    The reason a lot of people called him poor was because after losing his father at a young age he and his mother made a living by selling sandals, but they were still part of a family rich enough to send him to study from a very prestigious teacher.

    I've been waiting for this video.
    Just to add in. Emperor Ling's "older brother"(the General against the eunuchs) was actually He Jin, the older brother of Empress He aka the Emperor's consort. Dong Zhuo was actually "invited" by He Jin and Yuan Shao to the capital to kill the eunuchs, though after He Jin died, he had plans on his own.
    After his death, Dong Zhuo's corpse burned for several days when lit, because of the amount of fat he had.

    Love this episode:
    I am actually glad that the coverage gave Sun Jian the credit he deserves, he was quite a daring commander, unfortunately a lot of his achievements were retroactively accredited to Liu Bei's band.
    2 quick little points: Cao Cao did not declare his faction as wei just yet. I know a lot of works describe the era by labeling Liu Bei as ruler of Shu, Sun Quan as ruler of Wu, and Cao Cao in turn as the ruler of Wei. But he never dared to depose the Han Emperor and elevate himself in their stead (seeing the bloody results for Dong Zhuo and Yuan Shu) instead he ruled as the chancellor of Han and the power behind the throne. It was only after Cao Cao died that his son Cao Pi did away with the pretense and declared the kingdom of Wei and retroactively put his father as the ancestor of the royal dynasty.
    Another is that Dong also killed the 1st young emperor (Emperor Shao) he laid his hand on
    * Also props for making the eunuchs all Varys 👌😎

    • @alexanderchristopher6237
      @alexanderchristopher6237 5 лет назад

      Cao Cao did established a feudal kingdom within the Han called Wei. Which was a big no-no at the time since only the Liu family can be feudal kings. That was as far as he can do to be the emperor without really abdicating the emperor and incur the wrath of everyone.

    • @Dragons_Armory
      @Dragons_Armory 5 лет назад

      @@alexanderchristopher6237 No no I Mean that at the time of Cao Cao absconding with Emperor Xian, he was not a King yet, he was a noble, then a Duke, not it was not until later that he was a King, so "Kingdom of Wei" is a bit premature

  • @jeffreytsao5710
    @jeffreytsao5710 5 лет назад +1

    . Cao Cao was a warlord when he took the emperor in, but this is decades before he named his territories “Wei”. He didn’t take that title until well after Yuan Shao was defeated at Guan du.

    Romance of the Three Kingdoms was one of my favorite games for a long time, and the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history is one that fascinates me. I am really hyped to see the Total War franchise's take on it. Also loving this series as well, although for the most part I was already familiar with the wide brushings of this saga. I hope Extra History finds some time in this series to reference Cao Cao's role in editing, commenting, and preserving "The Art of War" book for modern audiences.

    A while After watching this video I continued reading a manga called wortenia senki about a martial arts expert getting transported to another world and slowly conquering that world. There was a reference to this part of Chinese history in the chapter I am reading right now. It’s crazy how often and quickly recently acquired knowledge comes into play! It happens to me all the time, and I can brush off the stuff that’s occurring around the same time due to special events or situations, but most of my “eureka” moments happen with completely unrelated situations.
