Hell yeah they took it too far. I had to jump out of myself to find a place to listen to this album and love it. Usually I didn't have to go so far. But it's rooted enough in lore for us to be familiar with it in such a way that we don't feel bad about leaving our comfort zones.

I often fantasise about how fucking great Centipede Hz. would sound if it had a less noisy, clearer sound. I still really like the album, but the noisiness makes listening more tiring for me (as with most Animal Collective albums). Still an AnCo fan though :)
