Every time I've witnessed Animal Collective in concert the band has been bathed in colored light, with shapes and patterns floating above the members' heads, often mirroring the unpredictable and mesmerizing journey that defines its music. Yet here, the band is brightly lit for its Tiny Desk (home) concert - which it filmed at MASS MoCA (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art), playing new songs from its 11th studio album Time Skiffs - and the band's musical journey remains transfixing.
The four members known by their monikers Deakin, Panda Bear, Avey Tare and Geologist are joined by a silent "time skiff rider," dressed mysteriously in a hooded robe, who cuts paper shapes at a tiny desk as the band's music unfolds.
The set begins as Animal Collective's new album opens, with "Dragon Slayer" morphing into "Car Keys." The abstract words ping back and forth between Deakin, Panda Bear and Avey Tare, resembling a secret code to which only they hold the key: "I saw a red kite fly / Was it held by an anchor? / I saw a red kite burn / I saw a string gone astray."
The final track "Kings Walk" is for those truly dedicated to the collective. It's an unreleased, vocal-heavy song that Animal Collective has been performing since 2019. With lyrics as abstract as Mary Lum's Assembly (Lorem Ipsum), the artwork filling the MASS MoCA walls behind the band, the music feels challenging, not always welcoming. It's a path in music that perhaps you've never taken, but may want to take again once you do.

That person on the construction paper just killing it all set.
It's Avey's sister who does a majority of their album art/visuals.
Cardbordians don't believe in killing. Only scissoring.
@@kzoohardyboyactually? that’s so cool lol
@@kzoohardyboyI freakin’ knew it was Abby!
These guys felt like such an obvious choice for so long that I thought I'd never see them here.
Is Noah still living in Portugal! Wow I haven’t seen them in years
@@hellodolly2551 Yeah and he's got a new album coming out with Sonic Boom in a month
Bro seriously. Been waiting for it for years.
I love Animal Collective, they changed my life.
Same for me
How?
Same
absolutely same man
@@Kaisersozze for me, I could just stay on the surface layer of that answer and say that since they are by far and away my fave band of all time and likely will remain so until I die, I could never really get tired of them, and they always seem to be there for me when I need them/the music.
now, if I ever REALLY need a treat, I always get a big lump of feels when I read the lyrics along with some of my faves (and since I don't hear/follow/comprehend lyrics very well, at least not automatically/naturally, it's always usually a rather emotional eye opener to read the lyrics along with the sounds that speak so directly to my heart strings and soul reeds..
What a beautiful thing to wake up to.

have a wonderful day, on purpose!
Man, I jut woke up at around 4:30 this sunday, made some tea and found this. I'm very happy.
I thought as a nyc kid, i heard everything by the time i was 30, then i heard animal collective's Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished...I was totally smiling.. life does have new things in store for us.
This is so perfect. I feel this way with every new release from them. It always feels fresh.
panda is such a great drummer
It Always blows my mind how musicians are able to play an instrument and sing at the same time.
His drumming style reminds me of the drumming on Can's Future Days. Feel like their recent music has been super inspired by that album in a good way
Panda Bear - Perfect Percussion. He even claims it on their first album. and delivers
The drums on April and the Phantom changed my perspective on what can be done on a kit creativity-wise
So happy to see him on the skins
My favorite band... Changed my life so many times over. So happy to see this upload
Animal Collective is my baby blanket - like a musical manifestation of my comfort zone, haha. They have meant SO much to me for SO long, both as Animal Collective and separately in solo projects. It brings me so much joy to see them here.
I would love to hear Interpol on Tiny Desk.
@@ElectroghoulSpeaking of...Grizzly Bear are way overdue to release new stuff. Just sayin' haha.
You had me until Interpol, lol. For some reason, I think that Animal Collective is too hippie sounding now. Or for lack of a better description, this isn't as good as their earlier stuff. But that's just me.
Same!
@@skyhigh_butterfly pretty sure they're not a band at the moment. Daniel addressed it when his album (great record. kinda scratches that grizzly bear itch) came out. I wouldn't rule out the possibility that they'll come back at some point, but it doesn't sound like anything is in the works at the moment. Also I think Ed went back to school to become a therapist so that's kinda cool
These people are literally some of my favorite humans on this planet - Kings Walk is such a cool throwback to their Sung Tongs and Feels days, I fking love it
YES
For real, a band that will stand the test of time. So joyful. You'd want their music with you if the world is ending and not much is left. An outstanding group.
i love this so much but all i can think about is how warm they're all dressed
This was recorded in northern Massachusetts back in winter (March 11) at Mass MoCA. I was at the show there that night!
I love them so much. My friend introduced them to me during detention when I was in high school back in 2010. Magical memories.
I’ve seen a lot of incredible bands but there’s something magic about AnCo that just stays with me.
After all these years, watching them live still feels like witnessing sorcery
@@Olhado256 it really does. The experience of seeing them live is like they cast spells on you. You walk away feeling different, but it’s not like every other show I’ve seen.
That Dragon Slayer/Car Keys transition is so smooth I didn't even realize it was a new song
Time Skiffs grew on me. After realizing how many vocal patterns they had to memorize, it became an easy favorite.
It's definitely finely layered and an interesting work. But it doesn't give you that hippy chaotic manic dopamine rush like their older stuff does:1
Live the songs are vibrant, but the album is hollow for the lack of a better word, Passerby in particular lacks any sonic magic. I really never thought I would say this about these guys.
They have such a dense sound that they had to put them in the Big Tiny Desk room.
It's so weird seeing AOTY users outside of AOTY
exactly what i said to my pal that sent me this ahahahahaha
I can’t believe they found this with the Webb telescope

Heard /watched this band last week on Alabama Public Television. Almost instantly found my new favorite band !!!
They're definitely one of the greatest artistic bands of this century. Not talking about popularity, but consistent artists of their craft and broad scope of material. Who really challenges them? Been going on for 23 years.
@@zach5381 I can only think of Radiohead, potentially. Not a lot of groups can think outside the box and cook up fresh ideas like them and AnCo. That said, I'd still lean towards the animal boys in terms of pure inspiration, originality and variety.
i'm dying at Abby just sitting there doing crafts mysteriously
Who is abby? That's the time skiff rider!
i guessed it was her under the mask, til i realized it wasn't a mask! heh
@@dragon-id5uj Same! That was kinda trippy.
@@SanMann11 Avey Tare's sister!
All too relatable ...
bro imagine if they performed songs from sung tongs on the tiny desk office, please make it happen npr 😭😭
I don't think anything can beat the pitchfork sung tongs video
sweet road and leaf house would sound great omg
@@FickleWid for real..
Legitimately my favorite album by them hands down.
Yeah the Pitchfork wasn't enough for me, NPR can make it happen again.
SUNG TONGS, IN ITS ENTIRETY, WITH ALL THE WEIRD FIXINS, PLEASE AND THANK YOU!
I don't think NPR controls the setlists...
I've long resisted their charms, and I am chastened. Lovely.
✨👏
Every time I can get to an Animal Collective show, I have a glow that lasts for days after
Animal Collective, thank you for making music. I think you’re great.
stay weird AC stay weird
🔥
Every two or three months I remember this comment
Me too. It’s nice words to live by.
I’m in my 30s this band was constantly on repeat on my psp back in high school, helped me through tough times and moments
Same! I remember listening to AC every morning with my best friend on our way to the bus stop freshman year of hs. Then I'd get home and listen to them again nonstop while I painted/drew alone in my room. Still one of my favorite bands ro this day.
Experiencing Kings Walk just now was a spiritual moment for me. Why did I ever stop listening to Animal Collective? I've been going back through the music I loved from over decade ago.... They are still one of my favorite live shows I've ever seen back in 2009 in Tucson, AZ. Thanks for continuing to keep making magic.
I guess King's Walk will be the closer of their upcoming album. Pretty killer closer tbh. I can't wait to hear it mixed.
This band means SO MUCH to so many people, my self included. They are criminally underrated.
I've been waiting for an AnCo Tiny Desk concert for what seems like forever-what an absolute treat to wake up to this morning!
these people are unjokingly the saviors of music.
Avey Tare sporting a Mononoke pin on his hat. 💛
It took too long for me to find a comment that said this. That was the first thing I noticed.
@@dwezel thanks for being one of the rare people who reads before posting.
Great surprise 😀 have watched-listened three times today. Love AC in all their stages forms of sound pallettes.. ❤

LETS GOO!! Been waiting on this for a long time❤️🔥
Animal Collective and a couple of it’s individual members have had an immeasurable impact and influence on near all modern music and music enjoyers. Their presence is inescapable. Though I all but stopped listening long ago, I’m so glad theyve continued on and have nothing but appreciation for their work.
The latest album brought back my desire to listen to and explore their music again!
Check out Time Skiffs! As a long time fan I was a bit disappointed (though I still enjoyed them enough) by some of the recent releases since Centipede HZ, but Skiffs is an amazing album.
Love that they did Kings Walk. Thank you boys 🙏
Saw them at the Beacham this past saturday. It was my friends first concert and it was AWESOME.
I had never heard of this group before today. Indeed, I’m intrigued. ((Thank you for including a credit to the artist whose works adorn the set. That’s actually what caught my eye first!! 👀))
They're good about giving credit on Tiny Desk.
Listen to their albums! If you like guitar and folky stuff try Sung Tongs, if you like psychadelic electronic pop stuff then Merriweather Post Pavilion is also great.
@@AAARREUUUGHHHH thanks for the tips. I’ll have to check those out. My interests in music run the gamut…I like a bit of it all.
@@tiffanybluetarot Same here, highly recommend!
The vocal harmonies…💕 miss you guys! So reminiscent of Tomboy for me.
13:16 Panda doing what he does best..... I love it.
Out of all the instruments I wish I could play, drums are definitely top three. The simultaneousness and precision it requires (though some drifting and non-perfection is always nice to make it more alive) is beyond my ability, let alone to sing at the same time. Love Panda Bear and Animal Collective
Dropping in to say I love your mirth spell profile pic haha
@@ellliottter haha thanks man! You got that Expert Eagle Eye going for ya 🙃
More Bassoon!
My favorite band on my favorite live performance series? Why the universe so nice today

This is the best description of Animal Collective I have yet seen
Panda Bear - Perfect Percussion
0:00 Dragon Slayer
4:12 Car Keys
10:20 Kings Walk
It kinda blows my mind that these dudes are still making music because I associate them so heavily with mid- to late 2000s (aka the best time in the history of popular music). Not many bands from that era are still making vital music but somehow AnCo aged like fine wine.
Edit: It also blows my mind that they were always better live than on record and it's still true!
Animal Collective transcends time. Skip through it, if you will.
I bloody love this band
Feels wild to still hear them sound so rad, got into them via the Skate 3 soundtrack, and wow it's been a blast
The first 20 seconds of kings walk literally brought tears to my eyes almost instantly
"This old world is getting cooked. This old world is tougher than it looks."
Animal collective es alimento para el almaa
verdades
abby should be another band member that vibes and does arts and crafts
isn’t she already?
No way that is Abby under the cloak.
dave and abby are the craft gremlins already
She is, she does the lights and visuals for them most of the time.
@@cactaceous yeah I saw five o clock shadow on homie
I feel so blessed and fortunate that these guys exist so I'll never have to have another favoritest band/music artist ever.
funny how all fave bands felt like that in my life, progressing up to the point when Anco took over my heart and soul.
but it's just different this time, id bet everything I own that in 10-20 years, I won't have discovered anyone else that so wholeheartedly speaks to my goosebumps and guts..
I've had the exact same experience! Fav band for life
I was 17 when I first heard Feels.. im 36 now and they still spark a specific frequency of joy for me
Could someone let NPR know they did not accredit the instrumentation properly though? Deakin very obviously is playing keyboards/electronics for the majority of the show...
ya i’ll send him a text
@@davidino1236 thanks homie I appreciate it
Doesn’t say Avey is on bass either
HOT ANCO SUMMER IS HERE 🌞
Panda bear doesn't seem to age :D looking good noah x
It helps that he wears the same clothes for decades. I saw him at a show in May wearing the same hoodie he wore on Letterman back in 2009.

I was so excited to see your concert in NYC when I was 16 and then ya'll canceled because someone got sick.

WHAT?!?!?!?!??!? Wow, thank you so much NPR!!!
Get me back the car keys
Go in my back pocket
Rob a quick one
Send a spell and
Come and get me sharply
Give me the once over
Ready the weapon
With a ringer in the hand
And one stuck up in a bush
Get me
Come and get me softly
Enter the right chamber
Sap in a rush
Wrinkled paper on the sidewalk
Mess when it blows over
Fault of no one
And how are we doing now?
How are we doing now?
How are we doing now?
How are we doing now?
How are we gonna know?
How are we gonna know?
How are we gonna know?
How are we gonna know?
(A Hole in the ground)
And the minutes can't make up their mind
(And on a holy ground)
Just how long they'd like to be
(A show of gratitude)
And the hours are wondering
(And on your way)
Why are we in such a rush?
Go and hold me tightly
Give me the once over
Ready the weapon
(A Hole in the ground)
And the minutes can't make up their mind
(And on a holy ground)
Just how long they'd like to be
(A show of gratitude)
And the hours are wondering
(And on your way)
Why are we in such a rush?
And the bluest mood isn't blue
(And on a holy ground)
Did you ever meet your dark side?
(A show of gratitude)
And the raincoats are retiring
(And on your way)
Even they need kinds of sun
