- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Hazel Cills | March 15, 2022
The first shot of Bonobo's Tiny Desk (home) concert is a little disorienting. What looks like the official Tiny Desk at NPR's Washington, D.C. headquarters is actually an eerily accurate miniature replication. Fit with scaled-down vinyl LPs and Bob Boilen's knickknacks, it was created by Cheronda Scott of CSpykerMiniatures and Kat Williams of Real Life Miniatures. "We couldn't be at the NPR desk, but we have brought it with us," Simon Green, aka Bonobo, says, gesturing at the tiny desk, perfect for a doll.
The British-born, Los Angeles-based DJ and artist Bonobo is known for his chilling, minimalist electronica. Performing from a warehouse in Nashville, Tenn., where he says he has been rehearsing for an upcoming tour, Bonobo's digital, synth-driven sound gets rounded out with a full band, who bring a new warmth to the music.
The artist's latest album Fragments was recorded in the first years of the pandemic, and inspired by the stagnancy the Grammy Award-nominated artist felt isolated at home. He performs three songs from that album here, beginning with the quiet "Tides," featuring the breathy guest vocals of Hundred Waters' captivating singer Nicole Miglis. He then segues into "Shadows," performed with vocalist Jordan Rakei and the album's "From You." To bring it home, he ends with 2016's "Break Apart," originally recorded with the singer Rhye but with Miglis here on the mic, for a set that hits like a series of quietly arresting lullabies.

Thanks to Bonobo and NPR for having me!
Insane performance man, super stoked to see you collab with Bonobo
Absolutely brilliant Jordan!!
super voice!
Great performance, Jordan.
👏👏👏
Unexpected surprise seeing Bonobo on here. Lovely way to start the morning
Couldn't agree more!
why unexpected?
@@johnadams8371 The channel seems quite American focused and didn't think Bonobo would be this channels thing.
Pleasantly surprised also
Jordan Rakei has an incredible voice! Wish they had more songs featured with him
see Jordan Rakei on his own Tiny Desk Show
Jordan Rakei is the man.
Check out his albums!
Yep, he always brings the vibe, so good live.
He really is awesome
When “electronic” music is actually played on real instruments. I love “Shadows” and Jordan Rakei.
This is exactly what we need these days, thanks Bonobo, thanks band, thanks Tiny Desk. Love and peace!
Falou tudo
Go ahead and do your thing
Jordan Rakei is a carbon copy of studio recording. Very impressive
That bass line oh my
It was such a pleasure to make the miniature desk for this series💜 this is amazing ♥️
Best TinyDesk ever! Yea!
You got the acoustics right 😅👍
you're amazing
@@femto___ thank you so much 😊
Bonobo is my favorite artist of all time. Simon has evolved his musical style so beautifully over the past 20 years. I love how he partners with other musicians to bring his albums to life on tour- and the vocal partnerships are just *chefs kiss*. True talent and respect all around.
It's been an absolute joy watching him over the years
Couldn't agree more. Personally I am a sucker for his very early stuff (animal magic, dial 'm' for monkey, Days to Come and Black Sands ... but I always love to see an artist evolve and somehow stay true to their style; and Simon's has just keep so much consistency.
He's such a phenomenal talent - I feel like he's pushed the envelope for what it means to be a producer/musician with each project he does. That live recording from the early days is still my favorite!
0:00 - *Tides (feat. Nicole Miglis)* (3:49)
4:50 - *Shadows (feat. Jordan Rakei)*
9:29 - *From You (feat. Nicole Miglis)*
12:59 - *Break Apart (feat. Nicole Miglis)*
[17:23 - Tiny Desk team]
Thank you
Jordan Rakei is so underrated LOVE him! What a soulful voice xo
Fragments is a brilliant record, but Nicole Miglis' voice here really transports me to a completely different plane of existence!
I looked at the title like "Bonobo, Bonobo??!!"
I finally saw him live at Red Rocks last year. Literally one of my favorite artists. North Borders is the best album imo. Love this dude.
Yesss North Borders was the ish
Her voice sounds like she is channeling spirits from an unknown universe.
I love how his style is evolving from album to album, but you can still hear this particular Bonobo style all along. I get some Black Sands vibes from the 3rd song, and the second one reminded me of St Germain, with their album Tourist.
Thank you so much for this comment. I’d never heard St.Germain and I just took a second to peek into his album From Detroit to St.Germain and this is 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼.
totally...la French touch!
Love the Black Sands influences, loved that album to pieces!
I highly recommend listening to Fragments from start to end. The intro for the album is reminiscent to Black Sands- Poly Ghost into Shadows / Prelude into Kiara. Love the new album.
This performance of 'Break Apart' is just perfect! Thanks Bonobo for this gift.
I been a huge fan of his for years. One year he performed in Miami and I had broken my toe a few days before... I showed up in crutches and chilled in the back. I was not going to miss him. ❤️
Was that the show with Chet Faker opening? If it was, I was there too. It was beyond epic. Simon is an inspiration to me as a sound engineer and bass player.
Bonobo is my all time favorite, just absolutely gorgeous music. You can see his progress as an artist across all his albums. He's purely focused on the music, there's never ever any drama with him. Much love, this music's gotten me through many, many rough times ❤️
YES, this is exactly what the world needs right now! In my humble opinion Bonobo has really reached Legendary status. He's been an inspiration for me since the release of 'Animal Magic back in 2000. I love how his music has evolved over the years, and the new album is amazing!
Jordan Rakei’s voice is flawless…
Loved Bonobo from way back, and Jordan killed it with his "Shadow" performance.
I wish there was a tiny desk concert for every song in every album that Simon ever made.
Less war & more Bonobo, please.
I just saw them Live. Was expecting just Bonobo himself, but we all got a full band. Would definitely recommend them Live. This is awesome too.
Why would you expect just him? The only time it’s just him it’s listed as DJ set. Which this tour was not.
@@Just.A.T-Rex From anytime I see him on RUclips, it is just him. Most dj's are doing solo dj'ing and no backup band. Imo if you creating your own music, I call them a producer.
That’s awesome! At some point I thought he announced no more Live Band shows, awesome he’s doing it again.
@@alvaro4k Thankfully the wirlds politicians have started open us up again. It's nice to see bands live again.
The new album is sooooo good!! Seeing them next Tuesday in Seattle!!
Real talk though, did they do a full band Kiara or nah?!?!?
Bonobo is truly something else. I saw them on tour this year and it was hands down in the top 3 best live performances I’ve ever seen in my entire life. I’ve been fortunate enough to have attended hundreds of concerts over the years spanning a diverse array of genres, and seeing them live was nothing short of absolutely astonishing. Bonobo is now one of my favorite artists 🥰
what are the other 2? :o
I am a brand new fan of Bonobo. My young son introduced me to his music in the last year or two. We had the absolute pleasure and experience to see him on his Fragments tour at the Rialto in Tucson this last week. I am blown away by the absolute creative talents of this musician and all his guests and band! I hope to meet him in person one day! The live concert was incredible to say the least!
I saw him on the same tour in LA! Really great show. Bonobo and his band are amazing. One of my all time favorite artists. Always glad to hear about new fans. :)
Just saw Bonobo live in Burlington VT. I have been listening to him for upwards of a decade now and never was able to catch a show until now. Literally the best concert of my life. Got front row with a buddy of mine. Incredible experience.
I just bought tickets for when he comes to Sydney. Was wondering what band he has when live on this tour?? Last time I saw him he had a 12-piece band with strings and brass and it's gotta be one of the best performances i've ever seen
@@lachyc4356 wow that sounds absolutely incredible. His group wasn’t that big because of the size of the venue but he’s touring with the same folks he’s performing with in the tiny desk.
Obsessed with Nicole's vocals with these songs. Her voice fits so perfectly!
Nicole Miglis is wonderful. What a voice...
Bonobo ages beautifully, like a tree.
Jordan Rakei is like a cheat code.
I love Nicole's voice. I like her version of "From you" more. :)
Nicole Miglis singing is soooo sweet! I love it
Bonobo live is somehing else!! 🔥. Thanks Tiny-not-so-tiny-this-time concerts 🙌. These new voices collaborations are crrrrazy good 👏. Wish you the best in the tour ✨. Catch you in Amsterdam!!
Don't get me wrong, Bonobo is brilliant, but how on earth is Jordan singing so flawlessly? What a beast.
By being a great singer?
Bonobo is a musician, not a singer lol ... he plays flawlessly, and wrote some great tunes, so maybe more of "a beast"?
@@MSFSFreeware butthurt much? Lol
@@MSFSFreeware if you think Jordan Rakei is just a singer I really urge you to have a good listen to his stuff, both under his name and his other alias 'Dan Kye'
And effortless!!! He is absolutely a monster! 💖
Man break apart is perfect arranged and executed, it's incredible. That moog sounds so good
For another great LIVE version, look up Bonobo Break Apart KEXP. Soooo good.
Howard Moon killing it on the bass
How come nobody is talking about Nicole on the first song, otherworldly
Greatest musician alive right now.
Never expected a Hundred Waters x Bonobo performance ❤🔥
Bonobo x Jorden Rakei 🙌🏽✨🔥 Also, that miniature Tiny Desk set is so cute. 😁
Absolutely incredible. Fantastic musicians, amazing sound quality. Stoked to see Nicole; what a voice. They make it look so effortless!
Any Bonobo release is truly an amazing gift. Literally!
Gorgeous!! Both vocal performances sublime, Jordan as always but this is the first I have heard of Nicole. Her rendition of From You is stunning, as much as I love the track with Joji. Ahhh what a treat!
nice to see familiar faces, still together
I can't describe how talented and professional these guys are.. Everything is more than perfect
finding your music definitely changed my life.
This video feels like a warm hug.
Jordan, I can’t stop listening to you sing this song. It’s the only song I play in this video. I think you’re at the peak of your vocal abilities. Performance of a lifetime.
Stupendi, meravigliosi grandi atmosfere .Non pensavo che la musica discotec potesse avere questo mondo così pulito e cristallino.Ben vengano le grandi novità che ti fanno sognare.
I love the mic placement on the clarinet. So you can hear the keys clicking..
Also this girl sang "Surface" from his Migration album if i'm correct. Ahhh memories
Please more clarinet on studio albums, that was amazing.
One of my favorite bands. Been a fan since the Era of Black sands.
This is such a stunning surprise.
Never expected to see Bonobo on Tiny Desk Concert.
Cool!
Nicole has one of the most tender voices i know
Give the drummer some! 🔥🔥
It would be awesome to see Bonobo live in a Latin American tour (Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, ...)!!!
Please send a video then. Would like to see that crazyness.
YES, YES, A MILLION TIMES YES
Ever since I wandered towards Walla Crag near Keswick and realised I was looking a real-life version of a cover of a Bonobo album, I’ve delved back into my collection and am re-listening whenever I get a chance.
Thank you for your smooth and soothing noises!
The drums on Break Apart are just mind blowing...
For another great LIVE version with lots of drum close-ups, look up Bonobo "Break Apart" KEXP. Soooo good.
I think that Nicole is the best vocalist Bonobo has worked with and is in a complete harmony with Bonbo's style.
Bonobo’s music can heal the world. Let’s play it on the world’s speakers for everyone to hear. ❤️
Sounds good.
I've been a Bonobo fan since 2008 or so, what a treat to get this!
Just saw Bonobo at Brooklyn Mirage and that was the single best concert Ive ever seen. Nicole Miglis is an absolute powerhouse, lit the entire room up. I really hope they tour again. Cheers Bonobo, you've out down yourself yet again.
You can always rely on tiny desk to introduce you to new artist you never heard, that are pretty dope.
And this one has an EXTENSIVE catalog to dig through with tons of variety to be found within. 😊
Enjoy!
Bonobo siempre sorprende.
Tiny desk has officially peaked. You can’t ask for much more than this.
Jack Baker is a legend. So funky with so little.
simon's grin when jordan starts to sing says it all. beautiful record and performance!
In love with Nicole Miglis' voice
This is such a heartwarming, ineffable performance. Amazing, truly amazing
Incroyable voix... Cette musique nous transporte... Quelle créativité incessante depuis 20 ans que j'écoute Bonobo sans aucune lassitude
Merci.... 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🎵🎶🎶💖💖💖
The best Bonobo songs! Jordan and Nicole i love you.
I cannot tell you how much admiration I have for Simon, having been a fan from the early days and seeing what his music and all around talent has grown into. With artists like this it almost feels like their music has matured at the same pace as my tastes. That being said, I feel the same way towards Jordan Rakei. The man is a true talent so their colab makes every ounce of sense.
Simon and crew, thank you for this!! The tiny desk we've been waiting for!! Nicole Miglis voice is like a cool breeze on a hot summer day!! Love the live performance, the woodwinds, the drums, the keys, the guitar and bass. All so lovely, thank you 🙏
I think she sings like angels sound....
Awesome. Just discovered Bonobo within the past few months. Love it.
I go and look up "bonobo live" rn and this gem just happened to come out yesterday. What lucckkkkkk
I'm having a perfect moment listening to this❤
It's like 4am and I'm having the most wonderful time right now
Deeply ❤️ Bonobo’s music!
Man its so evident this music was made during lockdown - so somber its like each song is singing into an abyss
Ugh 🥺❤️ excellent call, NPR tiny desk team. Such a beautiful performance, Bonobo has most certainly reached Legendary status and this intimate taste of that is the nourishing soul soup.
sooo good to see something sooo fresh now...BONOBO da bomb!
That drum line on ‘Break Apart’ is insane
This definitely is the better version of Break Apart! This is how it should have been on the record.
soooo glorious!! thanks Simon for the music you've been putting out for so long. Very excited to catch you in Amsterdam!
What a surprise, Jordan Rakei. Wonderful!
Thank you!
Experiencing your music live on your North Borders tour is to this day one of the best things to ever happen to me. I love everything Bonobo has created throughout the years, and this album is the theme to the welcoming of Spring time back here in the northern hemisphere for me. Love to you all
One of the best renditions of “Tides” I have heard, love the acoustics in this venue Bonobo.
Best news of the year so far ...
This is awesome! The sound of the snare on Break Apart is heavenly
"This is the first time we've been in the room together, or played this song together"... IKYFL🥵
Guys, greetings from fans from Russia! I still cherish memories and autographs from your concerts in Moscow. Thank you for coming then! And thank you for your new music! Sending love 🖤
So moved💜
방송사 계정인것같은데?…
Beautiful! Thank you.
Thank you tiny desk, bonobo, the band for this lovely gig ! My tiny round of applause alone in the studio while painting 😍🙏💫
Break Apart is such a great piece.
Bonobo and Jordan Rakei have quite a following in South Africa
Gorgeous set…mellow organic vibes🤟🏽
Liked them immediately on my first time listening to the band. NPR always brings the heat on the musicians and sound quality!
