I just got one that looks almost pristine externally, but has some super narly battery corrosion and rust, as well as what looks like.. some rust in the cassette bay. Hoping to get it to work..
Yes you can rewind and fast forward but it's not instant, once you finish one side of a cassette which is often about a solid 20 minutes, you can either completely rewind that said (Which you would probably NEVER do because it would take a few minutes of just rewinding) or you would stop and eject the cassete, flip it over, put it back in and start the other side, and repeat.
Some Portable Audio Cassette Players, typically referred to as Walkmans, had a repeat function known as Auto Reverse, which meant that you could go from playing Side A to Side B at the press of a button of the flick of a switch instead of having to eject the tape to flip it over. It's great for looping tapes and hopping from one side to another with ease, but not that great for looping songs. Not unless the tape was designed so that a particular song could be played back to back by switching sides when it ended. However, if you really wanted to loop a particular song, then your best bet is to make a custom tape that loops the song in question. While Endless Cassettes do exist, they're not as common as the usual Not Endless Cassettes. If you decided to have a tape play a song multiple times in a row, then you would have to record it play multiple times in a row onto the tape. Although some tape decks are capable of recording audio from your phone and CDs, not all tape decks can. Looping a song might become tedious if you're recording from another cassette, vinyl, or the radio. Whether or not having a song on repeat on cassette is worth it is up to you. But let's say that you're an incredible engineer who's thinking about rigging a custom Walkman that can play tracks from a cassette on repeat. In fact, I think I saw a Walkman or tape deck with the ability to do a track skip function of some sort, so it's not entirely science fiction. The main issue would be how the machine would detect the start and end of a song. From what I recall, the machine could tell that a song had ended by checking to see if there were about 5 seconds of silence. You might be able to make that time shorter so that the tapes don't need a long time in between songs, but then you have to worry about when a song has actually ended and when is the song just taking a minor rest. Then again, I'm sure this problem can be overcome if someone was determined enough to have a repeat function on a Walkman. Also, some Walkmans had a built-in radio, so technically you could stream music.

I remember scrubbing that rewind or ff button and listening to the chipmunk noises to get to those songs i wanted to hear. If your batteries got weak, your music sounded low pitched and stoned. A lot of times the input jack got messed up and u had to hold it just right to get sound outta both headphones. If you made a mixed tape, that empty space towards the end that wasnt enough for a song made you decide to either record song anyway to autoreverse to the next side, just start recording on the next side or squander that space for something dumb. Sometimes cassette decks would eat tapes so u used a pencil to rewind several feet of tape back into cassette. Why a new generation wants to revisit this... I dont know.
