Now THAT’S a french overture! And the fugue played at a breathtaking clip! Marvellous. The prelude was used as the processional at my wedding. But that’s the sort of thing happens when organists marry.
this video should have 35 million views not just 35,000. It’s now one of my two favorite renditions of this masterpiece along with Michel Chapuis. The pedal voice is perfectly balanced with the others.
I was almost five when I first heard the St. Anne. My mother was in the kitchen, humming the last part of the fugue. I listened to her , then the recording by the legendary Biggs. Shortly after, I picked out the melody line on the piano, which set my career in music in motion. Today, some sixty years later, t 13:04 his seems to be my signature piece, always requested for a recital. I am soon to finally retire from Church music. I started taking organ lessons in 1969, and was playing in Church by twelve. It's been a good run and it's time for me to give the reins to a younger artist. Thanks for an amazing performance Jonathan!
Well I don't know what made Jonathan decide to make the trip to that wonderful Marcussen organ and record what for me is the most majestic of JSB's organ works but I'm profoundly grateful he did and that Tom recorded it and uploaded it for us. Thank you.
@@jeffjensen27 Bizarre comment - I know he lives near Manchester and is an Artist in Residence (Organist) at the Bridgewater Hall and does a regular lunchtime concert series on that organ and that he no doubt can access the organ quite easily if the hall is free. Over the years many commentators have asked Jonathan to perform and upload BWV 552 as it was 'missing' from the large number of JSB works he has uploaded on this channel and now suddenly here it is! So my comment was more philosophical wondering what made Jonathan decide to perform and upload this masterpiece to his collection. Whatever it was I'm grateful,
@@epincion My guess is that he was at Bridgewater Hall, rehearsing for his recital with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, next Saturday in Singapore, so took the opportunity to record this video , as he'll likely be away for a week. This will keep his followers from 'withdrawal symptoms' until he returns home !!
People seem to have misunderstood your perfectly reasonable comment, taking it too literally and not appreciating the very English understatement in its phrasing.
I must have heard this splendid work hundreds of times in my lifetime and yet it never fails to thrill, especially when played by an organist as capable as Jonathan. A brilliant work played brilliantly. Thank you for sharing!
You always thinking of us. You never disappoint, we expect a lot from you and you always offer more and better. It is always a pleasure to listen to the sounds of the wonderful Bridgewater Hall. I am glad that you are home, especially now that you are about to embark on that long journey to Singapore. Enjoy the moment in Manchester and above all take care of yourselves. Thank you very much for sharing, you know how to brighten one's day. ❤💖😘😘
Oh Thank you so much, Jonathan & Tom for that wonderful Bach. "Goosebumps"? I should say so!! I can't get to many concerts around the country these days, so yours are always such a delight! Being the widow (27 years) of another international organist/composer ( also from Manchester), I miss hearing brilliant organ music, so your concerts keep me 'topped up', and the memory of my late husband's playing alive.
The majesty of this piece has never left me since I played it during my college years. Ralph Vaughan Williams loved it so much he requested it be played at his funeral. Bravo, Maestro Scott, you had me tearing up at the first chords of the Prelude.
Glorious!! Wonderful rendition of this Bach gem! Lovely to see you at the main console of the Bridgewater Hall organ again. That must have felt like a proper workout!! Thank you so much for this.
My all time favourite piece, beautifully played by the Maestro. Interesting to see the wonderful pedal work, especially in the prelude. Bravo, and thank you (both).
BWV 552 was the very first Bach organ work I ever heard. I was 13 and had a vinyl LP of E- Power Biggs pounding this out this work on the Flentrop at Harvard. Yes the Christmas of 1974 was wonderful indeed. Jonathan's performance here even beats out the old master--I'm certain somewhere E. Power is nodding in approval. Great Job guys!
Jonathan’s wonderful talent and execution often brings tears to my eyes. The brilliance of Bach is sometimes overwhelming when played by this great musician.
Thanks, Jonathan (and, obviously Tom) for such a magnificent performance! I've known and loved this Prelude & Fugue (BWV 552) for over 25 years now - and have listened to many recorded and live performances ever since. I have to say, though, your performance on this wonderful Marcussen instrument is truly amongst the finest ever!
Oh, thank you so much Jonathan & Tom. That was absolutely splendid. And "goosebumps'.. .. I should say so!! I can't get to many concerts these days, and being an international organists widow, I miss hearing brilliant organ music, so thank you for keeping it, and my husband's memory alive!! Wonderful playing, as always.
Brilliant Bach. One of my favorite organ pieces. (Another commenter mentioned ordering CDs from the Brothers online store. I was unaware they made CDs and that there was one). From Chicago, U.S.A.
I first heard jonathon play bach on the organ on the short tv snippits in the ukand have akwanya been in great awe of the pipe church organ a majestic instrument intil i had not realised how good jonathon was as an organ instrumentalist when i dae him on utube playing Bachs taccatta flugue pure genius touch and pure love and respect for the king of instruments, is outstanding mayɛ you continue to play for us for manya year to come a priviledge beyond belief The Toff,
Such a stunning performance Jonathan. Truly amazing. I enjoyed every single moment of this piece. Thank you for sharing. Special thanks to Tom too for sound and vision. Brilliant as always. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Let's enjoy a bit of music for champions, celebrating the Chinese New Year and using such remarcable performances as best gifts for the new year to come, you guys keep on spreading good vibes because that's what we need the most, you are doing a great job indeed, long live Bach lovers forever
Across time, I can listen to Bach’s “St. Anne” and tears come to my eyes just like when I first heard it, it’s so profound. A human being wrote that. Wow. There’s no comparison to that in any other form.
Thank you so much for posting a new video despite commitments in Singapore. I'm thinking that you are already there in the country of Singapore and adapting to the time difference, which is almost 24 hours different from the UK, in addition to the climate too. Wow... how crazy. 🙃 Hope everything goes well on the trip. Curious to hear their organ which has bamboo flutes. What will be the piece you recorded?! (Debora alwayscurious) 😎😂🎵🎶
I have just ordered 7 CDs from the Scott Brothers Online Store and the process was quite painless. In the Old Days (pre Brexit) there were no formalities involved when purchasing from England but now I am very worried about customs and import fees. Books are VAT and duty free but I don't know if this applies to CDs.
Please tell me if it is my sound card which is inflicting so much compression on this audio? I would want to hear this beautiful piece and magnificent instrument as if I were in the hall with you. Please advise me so that I can enjoy your performance at its very best. Sit in the hall maybe?
All organists need to listen to Schobberg's orchestration of this work when they are choosing their registration. So much is blurred here, especially in the prelude, where instead of hearing motifs clearly, we hear a sort of muddle.

Wonderful!
I'm in awe of how amazing this sounds. Is it as hard as it looks?
Hello, Jonathan! May I suggest performimg Bach's BWV 546 or Elgar's Organ Sonata in G? Thanks a lot

NOT fstr.. 1/3 of fuga, Remarkbl. Instrument, some, Marcuss. Is still. making Breath-taKING Organs/voicing, Bravo 🥇
You can just hear the mathematics in any work by JS Bach.
Wonderful organ and performance. But sad to see that your signature wrinkled toe organ boots are no more. Very sad. Mike in Oz
Admirably detached, even the 16th notes. Now cut the 16' from the manuals and mike it better for more clarity.
Try it without 16's on the manuals.
