Wow!! I am always lost for superlatives when commenting on these videos! The Basilica, the organ & the work by Bach, the videography are all glorious but Bach's works somehow bring out the absolute best in Jonathan & his performances seem to go up a level (as if that were possible!!). Jonathan this was absolutely outstanding!! I'm sure I will come back to this video again & again. Thank you both so much for uploading it & giving us such a treat.

When I listen to this performance:
I can't help but think of
Simon Preston, Peter Hurford, Marie-Claire Alaine, Helmut Walcha & E. Power Biggs:
I am not competent to know where Jonathan Scott should rank amongst them,
but I do think that he belongs right in there alongside them.

    • @JSB2500

The emotions induced by performing this piece are indeed beyond imagination. The great Peter Hurford once said about his recording of this piece at Our Lady of Sorrows, Toronto, something like "I well remember the occasion. I couldn't speak, let alone play anything, for upwards of an hour afterwards". I play the piece myself and experience similarly strong emotions, especially when playing without the score: a really intense experience that significantly enhances the depth of meaning of my life.

Excellent tempo to let the music breathe and imaginative registration. I always look forward to the Neapolitan sixth chord climax in the fugue (at 11.58). The Rieger restoration of this period Baroque (?) instrument is interesting in having the Hauptwerk (Great) on the bottom I manual and two tuba stops, a French récit, obviously for modern versatile use.

A very fine performance, however, the tempo is a little quick. I would prefer less contrast in volume between the manuals. Sometimes I think the reeds overpower too much. This is just my opinion. I must emphasize I did enjoy this performance though. Listening again, I think the tempo is fine.

Waaaaaaay too fast for a church like this with 6 or 7 seconds of reverberation. The beauty of this piece is not so much the theme in the pedal as it is the cathedral of counterpoint above it, one astonishing variation after another. With more than just a few stops drawn, it all turned to mush. Technically impressive, but not very musical.
