      i hear u but that thing (rhopoint doi meter) is much more than a gloss meter. It provides a numerical value for clarity/haze too. There is a video that Todd at Esoteric did on this item which explains and covers a lot in the diff between this and just a gloss meter. But yeah...pretty pricey.

    I would love to think every car fresh out of the factory had near perfect paint, but they don't. They try to use the least amount of paint to look reasonably good at the least cost in order to maximize profit. I think it would be interesting to see a comparison of factory fresh paint and see which auto maker has the best finish. BMW, Porsche, Audi, Mercedes Benz... Paint hardness/softness, thickness, clear coat...
    Sure you can make a fair paint-job look amazing with a lot of time and effort polishing, but you get to a point of diminishing returns you know?

      so imagine matt leather with a tiny bit of gloss thats like 2 GU image really old nakered dull paintwork with clearcoat. thats about 20 gu. average paint 50-70 gu.
      good glossy wet looking paint 70-90gu. The base color can effect GU readings. black for example seems to give higher gloss readings.

    £3090 is a bit out of the home detailers price range though. I can understand why because it’s a scientific instrument but honestly not really relevant to us meet mortals.

    • @ForensicDetailing
      @ForensicDetailing  5 лет назад

      exactly what you say its primarily used as a developement QA tool by companies that manufacture products where surface appearance is important and they need to be able to measure and test that. But more and more of these will be picked up by industries that also refinish surfaces to high standards. Detailing is one sector.

    Hi Jon. I'm trying to put together a video, inspired by your Garage Tour one, on my new home based Detailing Studio. Any tips for doing it, can't decide on "walk around" or "static" with pictures???

    • @ForensicDetailing
      @ForensicDetailing  5 лет назад +1

      Hey Dave, prolly the best way to do it is shoot dialogue of what to cover and then shoot the walk around stuff seperately and then you can cut the walk around footage over the dialogue as appropriate and edit out all the sort of bad bits of the walk around overlay like moving from place to place and setting up the shot. You could plan the dialogue just roughly from bullet points about what you want to talk about and allocate say 30 seconds to each bullet point so you have an overal time thing going on.

    • @DetailingandtheBeast

      @@ForensicDetailing OK yeah got ya! Hadn't thought about doing it that way. Time frame I had definately thought about. I'm not a fan of vids that go on too long. I've done some of my "build videos" by photo slideshow as I didn't capture any video footage.

    Have you ever come across any product that will actually improve the gloss on a factory clear coat in good condition.

    • @ForensicDetailing
      @ForensicDetailing  4 года назад

      its too complicated a question to answer faiz without an essay. but fresh mint refined polish new clearcoat. You will typically lower gloss when you put product on it. Do me a favour and just keep that to yourself because I get misquoted a fair amount nowadays. Or lets say its a bit more complicated than this.. but to keep it simple. Do not buy protection products to add gloss, hmm even thats misleading.. but try and get high physical gloss on your paintowkr and keep it by cleaning the car safely and often.

    • @ForensicDetailing

      Its an R&D tool used by companies developing surfaces where gloss and surface quality monitoring is important. Rhopoint are pioneers. In terms of customers think Microsoft, think Samsung, think mobile phones and tablets and laptop surfaces, that sort of think. think high end furniture making, think military, think car manufacturers. So they sell thousands to lots of large companies in various insutries. And theres nothing else like it out there. the other gloss meters my by the chinese are using a handfull of diodes etc.. rather than arrays. we all see the price and think wowzers, but its because dont understand the context and the market of the people that buy it.

  • @SuperDuncan67
    @SuperDuncan67 5 лет назад

    Interesting video but the meter is overkill for Joe public detailer. As you’ve said in some of your other videos you can’t see the difference in gloss between several polishes with the naked eye. If the finish looks good and you need a gloss meter to distinguish the better finish is it really worth it.
    We all know the difference Detaling makes to a car especially the difference when the car comes in swirly.
    From a scientific point I can see the use of the tool and why you would want to use it on your channel, but I’m not going to buy a polish because it has 0.2 units more gloss than the next brand. I will probably lose or gain more than that with technique and environmental factors involved. Even my LSP choice could affect the gloss. Still using old school waxes myself.
    Just my weekend warrior 2p input.

    • @ForensicDetailing
      @ForensicDetailing  5 лет назад +1

      Yo dunc this is not a product for average joe defo. this a R&D tool and something certain high end detailers might want. different between 2 hours quick polish and 5 days of polishing could be half a percent.

      yer its expensive, its a specialist machine really for R&D. But I think if your in product developement, or high end detailing its something to be aware of. I first got introduce to these type of tools in Autoglyms lab as well as color spectrometers as well.

  • @JoeJoe-xl4ef

    That thing is Matt moreman’s at obsessed garage kryptonite. He is deathly afraid of it and the things it would unveil when used on anything he might work on. He has even gone so far as to try and discredit tools like this because he know what it could possible do to him and the false image he has been trying so hard to portray even though he has finally acknowledged his fake use of not actually being OCD. Don’t believe me? Ask him what he thinks of the doi meter. I’m sure he’s much smarter than all the people who have worked on and are behind this tool.

    • @ForensicDetailing
      @ForensicDetailing  4 года назад

      I doubt he is afraid of it Joe. The main thing continued use of this tool will reveal is that the protection products dont really do that much in terms of how good the cars look. In fact I dont say this too often. But if your paintwork is in top condition these products can actually lower surface appearance indicators.
