    Great video Pan, When checking paint thickness I was told the panel edges are always thin so you should do these parts by hand, not with a DA Polisher. I suppose this should be based on the age of the vehicle's previous owner care and model.

    • @PanTheOrganizer
      @PanTheOrganizer  2 года назад +2

      That's not quite true. You would have to be careful around edges with a rotary type polisher (mainly used by professionals) as they could burn the edge at high speed. But for 99% of people, a dual action polisher is recommended and totally safe even on edges. You would really have to do something stupid for 15 minutes spinning on the same exact spot before being worried of burning through the clear coat.

    Hi,
    Thank you so much for your helpful video!
    I did paint correction to my 2022 Altima recently and the guy told me ,after he's done and used the gauge, that the thickness in the corrected area is bigger than the other parts of the car, saying that's because during the first correction, that a dealership did for my car, they probably repainted the damage area. Do you think that makes sense?
    Another question if you don't mind: does the gauge only measure the thickness of the clear coat, or the paint as well? Does the higher number mean more thickness?
    Thank you so much in advance!
    Sami

    • @PanTheOrganizer
      @PanTheOrganizer  2 года назад

      It depends if it had paint correction done on it before. If you owned this brand new since 2016 and never polished it, it's safe to assume that you can go ahead with your 2-step correction without measuring the thickness. If you bought the truck used and are unsure if it was polished before, then yes you should get a paint thickness gauge to be safe.

    Is there anything that can read the clear coat on plastic or fiberglass

    • @AlfonsoReimundedeAlfaro
      @AlfonsoReimundedeAlfaro 9 дней назад

      @@chrisramos937 yes,there are. BUT those are very expensive: from about 3k up to 20k or even more depending on features. Some can even read individual layers but they are overkill unless you work in the paint business and have lots of customers to overcome the cost. Cheaper ones like the one shown in the video are fine for most people, even most detailing professionals that do not have a large amount of customers. Usually plastic or non metal panels will begin with more or less the same thickness as the rest of the car, give it .5 to 1 mil difference. Just be more careful and register everytime you do corrections. Testing a less visible part or at least a portion where damage will be the leasr noticeable will be the way to go. If its not your car ask the owner about history, repaintings, previous detailing work, etc. If in doubt, either don't correct it or ask a paint or detailing pro that has one of those super expensive probes. In any case, always inspect paint visually first for signs of clear damage, repaints, etc. Most pros can infere paint state visually even before actually measuring although they will still use a gauge to measure overall thickness to be safe.

    Would you say its necessary for a new detailer?

    • @PanTheOrganizer
      @PanTheOrganizer  Месяц назад +1

      No, unless you are doing many paint corrections. It's not mandatory to have one as soon as you start a new business, but eventually, as you gain more customers, and perhaps do more and more paint corrections, it's good to invest in tools that help you, and a paint depth gauge definitely allows you to understand how much total thickness you are working with, if there have been areas with repainted surfaces, if there are areas where the paint is soooo thin that you won't be able to do a heavy correction, etc. It prevents you from running into issues.

    • @Abiiiid3819

      What about polishing lights, is that necessary?

    • @PanTheOrganizer
      @PanTheOrganizer  Месяц назад

      Define "necessary"? Nothing is ever necessary in detailing. Detailing itself is a luxury right? So as a professional, you do what your customers are paying you to do. If they want their headlights to be restored because they are faded, yellowed and oxidized, then yes you would polish the headlights. Perhaps start with a water sanding step, then compound, then polish, etc.
      Detailing is all about addressing issues on a vehicle, correcting the issue, enhancing the finish, and protecting the surface. Clean, enhance and protect.
      If the headlights are only moderately faded, you can use a headlight restoration kit like in my tutorial here: ruclips.net/video/sqpXsBcVako/видео.htmlsi=NH3njGMTOLc1C8G9

    Hi Pan, another great video. Quick question - I've been asked by a potential client if I could machine polish his 2005 VW T5 white van. The vehicle is white and the paint is very flat - feels like there is no lacquer left on some of the panels. The owner has been using Stardrops and a soft brush to regularly clean it, plus it lives outside all year around. Would the depth gauge still help me work out if there is enough paint to polish? I've been very honest with him and said that there might not be much room for improvement and want to make sure I set the right expectation. Cheers, Neil

    • @PanTheOrganizer
      @PanTheOrganizer  Год назад +1

      It's hard to say from a distance without even seeing the vehicle. And white vans are usually single stage. You can still polish them. So yes a paint depth gauge would still let you know how much paint thickness you have to work with, but if the lacquer or clear coat is completely gone, there's not much you'll be able to do to it.
      A full respray might be needed. Paint correction (machine polishing) can't bring back failed of missing clear coat. Paint correction is made to remove oxidation, scratches and swirls from clear coat.

      I don't have any thoughts, as it's not that important in the grand scheme of things. You're not looking for ultra precision, you're just looking to have an estimate of how much paint thickness you are working with. The tolerances are good enough that it will give you a good idea.
      Keep in mind you're not just getting a reading of the clear coat thickness here. You're getting a reading for the thickness of the entire paintwork, from the primer, base coat and clear coat.

      @Brian-dj3ru 2 года назад

      No.its the total thickness and door jambs have the least amount of clear coat on any car.you barely wanna polish door jambs.just literally go over it with one pass and call it a day

    • @PanTheOrganizer
      @PanTheOrganizer  2 года назад +1

      No. I explained this in the video. You usually have approximately 2 mils of clear coat, but that has nothing to do with the measurements in door jams.
      The door jam measurement is simply an indication of the thinnest overall thickness of the paint (primer, base coat and clear coat combined).

    There was a weird edit at about 4:50 talking about this, but is the instrument measuring total coating thickness down to metal substrate or clear coat thickness only? You mentioned clear-coat is typically 1.5-2.0 mils, so is that really all you have to work with? How can you ensure you don't polish through the clear coat into the color layer?

    • @PanTheOrganizer

      The instrument measures total thickness of all the paint system up to the metal, meaning primer + base coat + clear coat.

    Salut Pan. Comment peut-on expliquer que les Tesla ont une mauvaise réputation sur leur peinture? Est ce lié à une couche de clear coat plus fine ou est ce carrément la qualité de la couleur en elle même qui est moins bonne que des marques premium allemande par exemple ? Merci pour ce tutoriel tjs aussi instructif

    • @PanTheOrganizer
      @PanTheOrganizer  2 года назад +2

      Ça prendrait une éternité tenter d'expliquer le tout. Il existe plusieurs versions différentes dépendant de quelle source d'informations on consulte. Mais ma compréhension est que Tesla est relativement une jeune compagnie lorsqu'on compare avec les autres manufacturiers qui ont des décennies (parfois plus de cent ans dans le car de Mercedes et Ford) d'expérience à fabriquer des automobiles.
      Aussi, Tesla a initialement racheté une vieille usine de montage de Toyota, avec probablement des équipements désuets ou du moins loin de la fine pointe de la technologie. Ce n'est pas seulement la qualité de la peinture qui est en défaut, mais la qualité de leur assemblage en général aussi. Ils se sont amélioré certes depuis les premières voitures (Roadster en 2009 et la Model S en 2012), mais il y a encore beaucoup de problèmes de "panel gaps" (espace entre les panneaux, alignement etc), qualité des matériaux, etc.
      Il y a beaucoup de vidéos de propriétaires de Tesla sur RUclips qui montrent tout ça. Incluant des vidéos de detailers réputés qui se sont acheté une Tesla et qui montrent tous les défauts de fabrication et d'assemblage et peinture (carrosserie).
      Essentiellement, ça ne fait qu'une dizaine d'années que Tesla produit de réels véhicules alors c'est vraiment tout jeune comme compagnie. Ils ont le désir de dominer j'en suis certain, alors ils vont mettre les efforts pour améliorer leur produit. Comme l'ont fait Kia et Hyundai. Il y a dix ans, tout le monde riait de ces compagnies. Maintenant, ils sont considérés comme des marques parmi les plus améliorées et font d'excellents véhicules dans leur catégorie respective.

    Merci Pan pour cet excellent tutoriel qui m'interpelle : j'ai une jauge d'épaisseur, j'ai fait une mesure avant polissage, une mesure après polissage et la mesure n'a pas variée. J'ai fait un autre test : mesure avant la pose d'une céramique en 2 couches, et mesure après : pas de variation. Même si les couches sont extrêmement fines, il faut que la précision soit supérieure à la marge d'erreur : est ce que ta jauge est en capacité de mesurer cela ? J'ai fait le test sur le capot d'une voiture neuve une Nissan Micra : la variation d'épaisseur est de +/-10%. 👍👍👍

    • @PanTheOrganizer
      @PanTheOrganizer  2 года назад +1

      Je ne connais pas quelle machine tu utilises, mais il se peut très bien que tu ne vois pas de différence avant et après polissage en terme d'épaisseur si tu n'as rien fait de majeur. Il arrive qu'une passe enlève seulement 0.1 mil ce qui est très petit. Et la céramique, bien que détectable au microscope, il se peut que la machine ne voit pas une grosse variance du côté épaisseur, mais encore là, trop de facteurs variables comme type de machine, type de céramique, quels polish tu as utilisés, etc.
      Meilleure façon de savoir est de tester une autre machine d'une autre marque pour voir si elle détecte une différence dans les épaisseurs (plus sensible, précise, etc).
