RIQ is used to quantify effects such as orange peel and surface waviness. This new parameter gives higher resolution results compared to Distinctness of Image (DOI) measurement and better mimics human perception of surface texture, especially on high quality finishes such as automotive.

I have debated on getting a gloss meter due to the concern of having a false positive/negative results but ultimately and out of curiosity bought one and through the years have benefited me, In any case i opted not for the single 60 degree gloss meter but instead went for the tri gloss meter to mitigate some of the variables as it hits 3 angles, also in any measuring device one must adhere to manufacturers instruction such as lighting, surface area and calibration of testing to alleviate any false results and a high accuracy result. Jason mentioned RIQ this a more comprehensive testing and imho unless the client is willing to pay a couple of thousand dollars then maybe, because RIQ involves more time and not to mention cost of instruments such as spectrophotometer specific for haze, a color measuring guide and a few more instruments including a gloss meter is needed. And as far as the gloss meter not being able to determine the quality of reflection? The gloss meter actually does (high reflection high result and vice versa) what it can't do is indicate the cause of defect and what not. All in all the gloss meter offers the end user repeatability, affordability compared to other measuring kit, portability and ease of use that gives out a general idea of clarity and gloss achieved other than visual but if combined together imho it offers the best use and result, again imho if you can afford one i'd say get one preferably the tri gloss meter if u have extra to spare.

I like to be able to show a client some concrete evidence of the work I did, eg gloss units measurements, I think most clients gotta see the before and after pictures to realize the improvement on the paint of their vehicle so being able to back up the pictures with gloss units can’t hurt us detailers

So gloss meters can measure paint super shiny but in my eyes the paint is hazy and the riq is very dull? So this would be considered a false positive?

Do Detailers remove scratches in side windows (from it going up/down so much over time)- how is it done step by step?

    • @jamesdawson3094

Those lines are usually just greasy streaks that can be removed carefully with isopropyl alcohol. You can polish waterspots and scratches with m105

@@jamesdawson3094 Don't I wish. These are scratches I can feel with a fingernail. F250 known issue: wiper at the bottom was discovered to trap small pebbles and crap, so every time you went up/down- it gets a sanding. Tried Grots harshest compound, next up cerium oxide- but I'm not hopeful and would like to see it first. New glass is $80/$200 installed, and I'd add a new wiper while they are at it.

@@T_210 Yes, it can be done. And yes, it's a Cerium oxide job. Regular abrasives just can't cut glass. I like CeriGlass because it's convenient but the powder is cheaper. Mask everything well because it will make a mess. Use a rotary and a felt/rayon glass pad. It takes time and patience, but it can be done.

These gloss meters just come off as a marketing ploy. Here is something we didn't have some five years ago, now, if you don't have one, you're not providing good service. Please. No thanks. It's like the home theater people showing up to tune your setup with $10,000 in equipment. It sounded fine before you got here and I can't tell a difference now that you're done.
