He resorted to the unstoppable " sky hook ". Champion with 2 separate NBA teams. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar !!! He earned all of his points. Unlike MJ who was placed on the free throw line due to other players breathing too hard in his direction e.g. check out the footage. Kareem had to resort to wearing protective eye gear due to opponents pounding the he'll out if him. Kareem was the greatest basketball player ever. Had a complete arsenal of shots vs a "sky hook". MJ was better defensively. MJ was better in the clutch when it mattered most (6 for 6 in Finals and 6 or 6 as MVP). All while being 6'6" and did not have the luxury of playing along side the greatest PG in history (Magic). Incidentially, Magic carried the Lakers to the 1980 title with a 42/15/7 game while Jabbar SAT OUT.

      Shut down no. Both guys gave each other trouble. Kareem was able to lead the Bucks to the 1971 title and Kareem and the Bucks ended the Lakers' 33-game winning streak in '72. Kareem wrecked Olajuwon in their initial meetings in Olajuwon's rookie year. It took Ralph Sampson's (the other Twin Tower) help against an old Kareem in '86 to beat the Lakers in the playoffs. And finally, Kareem was the Lakers' main offensive weapon/leading scorer until the '87 season (over half-way through Magic's career) when Riley asked Magic to score more to relieve their aging captain. Magic drove the team, but Kareem was their backbone/core. Go back and study young one.

    Love this video, I have for years felt that Kareem is one of the greatest if not the greatest of all time. But my favorite Kareem moment and there are many but this one stands out above the rest;
    Beating the Celtics in the Garden in Game 6 of the 1985 NBA Finals, up to that point the Lakers had never beaten the Celtics in the Finals and had lost the previous season in 84 in 7 games, so this one was huge, and Kareem himself said when asked what was the best moment of his career he said: "Without a doubt beating the Celtics in the Garden in the 85 finals." Nuff said, Great Video.

    • @johnfu3850
      @johnfu3850 8 лет назад +14

      +Mick A, I know your comment is foolish. So don't make it. Instead, find me another player who scored 38k points and you will earn your right to speak against Kareem's achievements. Also he lasted 20 years while playing at a high level and reaching 38k points practically without the help of a 3 point line. No one has done that ever. Kobe was breaking down in his last four seasons and was practically harmful to the team. Jordan was able to play at a high level past 40 simply because he had taken time off from the game. Otherwise he would have been like Kobe at the end. Wilt played 14 years so we would not know how good or bad he would have been had he played. Parish was warming the bench while he was with the Bulls in 1997. The only one who was somewhat effective and Malone did not have any championship rings, as compared to Kareem's 6. Last, my comment about Kareem being the best player came not from me but Magic Johnson and Michael Cooper. Mick A, I don't know how old or young you are, but you need to watch some old tapes with Kareem in a Milwaukee jersey, then you will know how foolish your reply to my comment is.

    The reason Jabbar is not marketed as the GOAT is because of his religious conversion and his radical politics during the 60's. He is in the same category as Ali except that he was humble and did not boast. If any of had a clue about how the establishment views people like Jabbar then you would understand. Jordan did nothing politically challenging and was the beneficiary of those greats who had put themselves on the line as true political activists beyond the game itself.

Because he was boastful and bragging. The establishment view of Jabbar? Ali was so hated that he lost his license, ltemporarily locked up and had to find other means to survive. @@johntompkins5379 I love how Jordan homers qualify an achievement like that. 6-4 means Kareem made it to the finals four more times than Jordan, and that's supposed to be a bad thing somehow? like losing the finals is worse than not making them at all? gotta love the logic there. What about the 1994-1995 season? I mean, I get that Jordan only came back halfway through the season but how was it that the transcendent MJ couldn't lead his team passed Shaq and the Magic in the playoffs?

    I don't even have to watch this to agree. From top to bottom, high school, college and pro, he's the best basketball player ever. NBA accolades: 6 rings, 6 MVPs, 38K points, still effective into his 40s among other things. Could probably played another year or 2 even. He's the most dominant HS player ever, yes. Greatest college player, yes. 3 National Titles, 2 player of the years and 3 most outstanding player in the NCAA Tournament honors. Greatest pro player, I'd say most likely. When you look at him from 8th grade until he was 42 or 43 years old, he was a dominant basketball player like no other. He simplified the game and dominated. Period. Boring to watch, yes but that doesn't matter. It's about results.Side note, got robbed of the 1980 Finals MVP. He was killing Philly the first 5 games and average like 35 and 15 or so. Then Magic has one great game and he gets that honor.

      Kareem will rack up stats in the regular season but when the playoff rolls around his career regular vs playoff avg. drops in points, rebounds, assist, blocks, & FG%. only his FT%(0.019) and steals(0.1) improves
      Hakeem's career regular vs playoff avg. improves in Points, rebounds, assist, blocks, FG%, & FT%. only his steal(0.01) drops
      Kareem was not as "unstoppable" as they claim. the secret was to play him physical and beat him to or push him out of his skyhook range. what would happen if you push Hakeem further out? kareem would play another great center about 4 times in 82 games but when the playoff started that 82 turns into a 7 game series. All the great centers knew this and this is why he played worse in the playoff vs old wilt (afterknee surgery) Nate Thurmond mose malone and hakeem olajuwon regardless of age or era.
      Why haven't anybody notice that the only time the lakers didn't make it to the finals in the 80s was when Kareem was matched up against Hakeem Olajuwon or Hakeem's mentor Mose Malone in the playoff. And then losing to Mose Malone again in the finals
      What dominate center did kareem beat during the years he won champs?
      beside solo old wilt (after knee surgery) when it was 2 against 1
      if you combine the top two greatest scorer ever to play the game 39 years careers (kareem+karl malone) only 5 years was the offense not being run by Oscar Robertson, John Stockon, or Magic Johnson. the same three that everyone considered the greatest points gaurd/floor general in the history of the game. how do you think number 2 Karl malone is above 3 kobe, 4 mj, and 5 wilt on the scoring list. kareem is one of the greatest scorer of all time but you can't look over the fact that he had help. kareem career was downhill compared to hakeem's career

    I was at a game not long after Kareem came to the Lakers. They were playing Kansas City, coached by Cotten Fitzsimmons, and neither team was very good that season. Sometime after half time and the game was getting sloppy there was a loose ball at the opposite end of the court when Kareem dove for it. He some how ended up on his backside, legs splayed out in a huge "V" as the ball rolled past him. He reached out those long spider-like arms, grabbed the loose ball and made the outlet pass to the guard who converted for the score. Crazy game punctuated by the "do everything" Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

  • @paysonfox88
    @paysonfox88 6 лет назад +3

    Kareem is an original. The Sky hook was a shot he was forced to practically invent to get around the NCAA's anti- dunk rule.
    Wilt Chamberlain said that Kareem was the only guy he ever needed help to guard. Wilt was mostly unsuccessful in his attempts to block or defend the sky hook shot.
    I say the only person who can call their shot a true sky hook would be a center at 7' or taller. At that height, the "sky" truly enters the hook. Also, it's necessary to have large hands to shoot the shot with the wrist like a normal set shot.
    I'm saying Kareem's stats don't lie. Longevity is a virtue too. He maintained 24+ pts per game for 20 years. That's crazy.

He was a scoring machine and the only player that could handle Chamberland. I would have loved to see those two match up when Wilt was in his prime. Wilt was stronger and a better shot blocker. Yet, those modern guys play with press, trap, double-teams, rotation on the defensive end and they space the floor. Which NBA teams lacked before the NBA merger.
      Don't forget that defense is a 5 men effort. Relying strictly on man-to-man defense -- like 60s teams did for season long -- actually hurt their defense.
      If you have ever experienced college games, you'll understand that. I played against great defensive schemes in college. Against a great zone, when you beat someone, someone else is right in your face. You don't need toughness and grit to play defense : you just need to move effectively your feet, efficient communication and teamworks...
      Plus, 60s teams grabbed 42% more rebounds (poor shooting and faster pace) and teams were able to score 118.8 PPG in 1962, while taking 48% more shots... in comparison with 2016 teams!
      Knowing the pace factor, no past athletes would grabbed over 16 TRB or scored over 30 PPG in today's game (except if they rely on 3 points shooting). Jerry West or Louie Dampier could have scored over 30 PPG today because they were deadly shooters.

    • @choward5430
      @choward5430 8 лет назад +6

      *****
      You're not the only one who played competitively. Zones are only effective only if you have no shooters in the gaps and you don't attack the zone from the inside out. The other way to kill any zone is to attack the gaps or step into the gaps and rotate the ball.
      But your points are well taken. Regardless, you cannot guard Kareem Abdul Jabbar with what GS had on the court during most of game 6 & 7.
      If you don't believe me, call Jerry West. Or call Pat Riley. Or call Phil Jackson. Kareem might not miss a sky hook for 3 days if you guard him with someone 6'8" 215 lbs.
      Today's game is weak. It's only stronger in terms of point guard ability i.e. ball handling and athleticism. Dennis Rodman lead the NBA in rebounding in the toughest era 7 consecutive seasons at 6'6 210 lbs. So don't tell me Wilt and many others wouldn't exceed that. Andre Drummond averaged 16 points and 15 rebounds last season and he is in no way Russell, Chamberlain, Nate Thurmond, Jabbar or Rodman.
      Do you know what you're saying sir?

    • @david.tousignant20
      @david.tousignant20 8 лет назад +3

      C Howard
      No defensive scheme is perfect. But, playing strictly man-to-man defense allow your opponent to penetrated easily in the paint and allow you to feed your center as often as you like. A man-to-man defense is probably the easiest defense to face for a quality center like Wilt Chamberlain.
      I'm glade that you're talking about Dennis Rodman's body here. At only 6'7" & 220 pounds as a rookie, he was able to outrebounded his opponents like a certain Bill Russell did. At a mere 6'9" & 220 pounds, Russell was able to led the league in rebounds per game in five different seasons. Thankfully, Wilt Chamberlain deprived Russell to led the league 8 more times despite being smaller.
      Bill Russell and Rodman were intelligent rebounders. They were always in the right spot in the right moment. They knew how to box their man out. Wilt Chamberlain rely mostly on his athletic abilities earlier in his career.
      That's why, Dennis Rodman is still to this day, the most efficient rebounder in the history of the game :

      C Howard
      About rebounding :
      Chamberlain set an unbreakable record of 27.2 rebounds per game in the 1960-61 season.
      *But, the typical game in 1960-61 featured an average of 147 rebounding opportunities.
      * During Rodman’s, from 1991-92 through 1997-98 (rebounding champion), the typical game featured just 84 rebounding opportunities.
      * Roughly, Chamberlain’s record 27.2 rpg would roughly translate to 15.4 in Rodman’s era - over a full rebound less than Rodman’s ~16.7 rpg average over that span.
      * Today, rebounding opportunities are almost the same, but since their are more threes taken, centers & PF saw their rebounding productions dropped significantly.
      It's just a trend, PF and centers didn't became bad all of the sudden. The league is a guard game.

    Most people have no clue how dominant Kareem was at every level. He dominated individually and his teams rarely lost. People like to make MJ and Lebron the GOAT because being a seven footer with an almost automatic Skyhook isn't as marketable as the flashier guards. I personally think that Kareem is the closest thing there is to a GOAT. He is the best blend of stats, individual accolades, championships, peak, longevity, and overall impact on both sides of the floor. A lot of players hit some of those check marks, but Kareem is among the best in all those categories.
