It's no like he is conscious or any sort when he do it, I read that it's just some part of his back when it's touched it makes him do it instinctively, but actually it's just linger for some days after he is born. It goes away after that and he wont try to kill any of the other birds anymore. It's just something that worked more for him to grow and survive, but nature is for the fittest sure.

It's for their best survival, so the ones that have pressure on their back that push back have a higher chance at survival (more food, less competition) would be the ones who do better. They're not trying to eradicate the host birds completely because if they did, they'd have no nests to lay in...
