  • This is the continued portion of the Coastal Southern Pacific Daylight. In my previous videos you've seen San Francisco to San Jose ( • UPDATED 1/3/17 E R MON... ).
    In this video, I have the Coastal Daylight from Salinas to San Luis Obispo to Santa Barbara and onto it's final destination at Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal. Stations are built and additives to follow up later in a future video. Maybe even a cab ride video...stay tuned.
    I will say that this portion of the layout began May 26, 2018 and completed in under 100 days. As with any model railroad, I look forward to adding details, welcome all creative ideas, and positive feedback.
    A very Special Thank You to the coolest guys/friends who helped make this childhood dream come true.

    Beautiful just beautiful. Love the layout and the daylight. Have the full set in n scale from kato. The daylight is worth every penny in any scale.

    Your the second HO outdoor guy I’ve come across this morning- amazing; count me subbed. I’ll be soaking in all you offer as I contemplate similar in O.

    • @blakrootz
      @blakrootz  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for viewing, I'm not familiar with O Scale, but I would check to see if they offer PECO Nickel Silver Track before you begin. I was recommended this same brand due to its ability to withstand the weather and my layout is holding up quite nicely after 3 years. Good luck...

      @@blakrootz Wow 3 years!
      Judging from your foliage looks like you’re here in CA somewhere as I am. My climate is extremely dry with wild temperature swings- nothing survives… patio furniture will decay before your eyes so not sure if I can pull it off.
      You’ve done a wonderful job.

    Beautiful! My dad would tell stories of riding ‘The Most Beautiful Train in the World’ and we were going to buy a full set in HO for him before he died.
    I model O scale but to do the same would indeed take up my whole yard and rent for several months to pay for it!

    • @blakrootz
      @blakrootz  4 года назад +2

      That sounded like an excellent idea. Sorry about your dad, I know he would have loved that idea. To pull 17 cars in O-Scale may be possible but check with other O Scalers to confirm. HO is only possible because MTH (mikes train house) made the cars extremely light. I'm sure I probably can pull up to 25 on a flat surface. When you decided to build it, please share. I would love to see your video.

    I assume that this is So. Cal. Love the greenery, esp. the huge cactus. Looove long trains. Look forward to more. I take it that it doesn't rain much out there but everything would survive the weather--except. of course. the rolling stock.

      Actually my layout is located in the the San Francisco East Bay Area and it is raining today and has been for almost 3 days.
      The PECO nickel silver track makes it all weather proof. I plan to put a video up of the rain and the after effect. Thanks for enjoying the video.

    How does the equipment hold up to the elements? I've been told for my entire life that it is the biggest sin of model railroading to run anything besides G scale outside because the smaller scales can't take the humidity, sunlight, etc.

    • @blakrootz
      @blakrootz  2 года назад

      As long as you buy Nickel Silver track you will be fine. I've had this layout since Memorial Day 2018. No sealer is needed. I'm in the Bay Area, California. We get our share of heat. I suggest you try a sample track outside for one year. Every month, clean the rail and see if your train will run or use a lighted passenger car. This is what I did prior to starting this project. I also did a lot of research on RUclips. This is the modeler who advised and inspired me. He's had his outdoor layout for 19 years and in the snow....OO/HO Scale. ruclips.net/video/KE_n7iDRleU/видео.html

    should follow your example for my HO . Have some HO but no room left downstairs.The basement is full of 027 and outside is G gauge. Is track powered and is it all brass, which means a lot of cleaning.

    • @blakrootz
      @blakrootz  5 лет назад

      No, the tracks are code 100 PECO nickel silver. Cleaning takes an hour before each run due to size. I use the leaf blower first due to the many fruit tree leaves, then the PECO track eraser/cleaner, then one more time with the blower from the eraser residue. If the weather is fine I can go about 3 to 4 days before I need to clean again. Forgot to mention, I also own the CMX track cleaning cars filled with rubbing alcohol. Running that with my regular trains helps a lot.

    Now that the layout has been up for awhile, as I live in Australia which has a very high UV component, have you had any issues with UV damaging the sleepers?

    • @blakrootz
      @blakrootz  3 года назад +1

      no issues so far. the hottest in this area is usually 102 degrees.

    • @brianwilliams9706
      @brianwilliams9706 3 года назад

      @@blakrootz Thanks for your feedback.
      Back in 2009 we had our hottest day at around 50 Celsius (122F) but our hottest summer days tend to keep below 40 Celsius (104F) but the UV component can be off the rails.
      The premier train store in our area mentioned that a number of modellers have tried to lay external track but after about 12 months the UV began to degrade the track.
      Where the track will be laid, the UV index can hit 12 but I noticed that in Kansas City and New York that the highest is 6, which probably tells me that in some areas plastic track is great but in others that other means might need to be adopted.

      Thanks for viewing. Here is an outdoor HO/OO layout that operates in the snow. ruclips.net/video/KE_n7iDRleU/видео.html
      This is the same person I got all my info on prior to me building my layout. Few tips....only use Peco Code 100 nickel silver flex track...your choice on concrete or wood ties...they're both safe.
      Only use Peco Track Cleaning Erasers to clean your track before each run, use stainless steel nails to bolt your tracks down, don't use ballast it doesn't work well with any outdoor weather. I used roofing paper it has the outdoor ballast (rock look) already on it and the tracks sit fine on top of it, and lastly if you use any lumber...pressure treated wood is the best.
      Happy Railroading.

    Ive always heard/read that HO track deteriorates from being outdoors. How long have you had the layout up and have you had any trouble with that problem? Do you use any type of sealer on them? Im in Southern CA. and with the heat we can have. Im afraid the layout would get ruined. Still a wonderful layout you have. Also love how its up high so no bending.

    • @blakrootz

      It's important to use code 100 peco nickel silver track as it is rust proof. I prefer concrete flex track for a cooler appeal. Be sure to buy the Peco track cleaners (track erasers), because you will have to deal with the elements. I haven't had any rain but I do have my share of fog from the San Francisco coast and my irrigation system gets both 2:40-3:40 and 13:00 - 15:00 wet each time. Some days depending on the wind I will have leaves, fruit, or pine needles fall on the track and I need to get my leaf blower to clean the track. As for the fruit, I use a regular toothbrush and a brand named cleaner "Zep Original Orange Industrial Hand Cleaner from Home Depot" and a little cold water and brush the track like you would teeth...it works wonders in getting grim off the track and wildlife poop. I have been following another user who has his OO/HO Scale model outside for more than 16 years to date. He has been a great influence on my creation.
