Wow, thanks! Just getting a response and compliment from you guys is far beyond awesome. I'm very familiar with the work you and your brother do in this hobby nationwide in building, helping, and motivating people into model railroading. Thanks so much for the positive words, watching, and enjoying this video. Blessings...
Actually it was a bit windy. A few of my stationary box cars were toppled. You can actually see it in the video when the Daylight makes it way back in the house.
Stunning! Candlestick is exactly how it appears after they installed ramps and elevators (but too small). Been going there since 1968. Yes saw them all and saw Willies amazing catch with Bonds. 2 year ago my son did x-rays on Mr. Mays sadly he was in bad shape, but he acknowledged my son's admiration and respect by squeezing his hand. What ya going model next, Bay Bridge in the days of lower deck being for trains? I would not be surprised you got the talent! When young that used to exite me from the Oakland side where I once again reside.
2 things great with outdoor railroading, long trains & big curves. Do your neighbors say something (complain) about the noise (sounds)? Some times mind do, but most the time their grandkids are enjoying the trains. I run On30 & F (1:20.3) scale, my HOs are run on a club layout. I have Challengers steam.
Now have it sitting in San Diego with a Santa Fe PA powered 'San Diegan.' I have put videos of San Diego and glendale on from my trips. So cool to see them modeled. Have a great 4th. Scott
This is the first video of yours I’ve watched and wow! Outdoor HO is amazing. That’s something you don’t see everyday. I really like that Silver bridge! Do you clear coat your track to protect it from UV rays?
Hello, thanks for the kind words. No, the tracks are not clear coated. The weather is pretty fair where I am and it hasn't caused any major damage to the layout. I can say with it outside l, the tracks do get their own weathering; but b/c they are Nickel Silver, they do not rust. Thanks for viewing.
Looks terrific, audio and visuals. Obviously all DCC. Where are you located? I am getting the idea you could be down south as the tracks don’t do well through the winter What supports tgd track across the door? Thanks for sharing. I subbed you and will check your site out later. Cheers from Charlie in Toronto
Hello Charlie, I'm based out of California (The Bay Area). I used shelf hangers to keep the layout going across the garage door. Here is a video that shows a closer look. ruclips.net/video/1m9PccNfg84/видео.html Be sure to skip to the first minute. Thanks for viewing. I just subscribed to your channel also.
This is such an amazing layout, you have gained a subscriber. What kind of wood did you use for the support? I see a lot of dimensional support lumber that has perforations in the edges, even the top rail of the fence, has it been treated for outdoors? Did you have to gap every rail section? Incredible layout in just 5 years.
Hello, I use all pressure treated wood. Anytime the wood needed to be cut it was treated for outdoors. As for rails, every two flex tracks are soldered together, but every flex track has drop wires connected to bus wires underneath. One of my videos shows a bit more detail in this. Thanks for viewing and thanks for subscribing.
Wow, super impressive. Tons of questions. Where is this located, what is the climate and what is the track material? I have thought about this for my yard in NJ and have some sort of hinged covering for nasty weather. I would imagine the temp changes in NJ would be too harsh for the rail and being on the coast near the ocean it seems as if the salt air would attack the rail. I know some of the G scale outdoor layouts use aluminum rail and batteries in the locomotive or trailing car. Beautiful job and congratulations on your anniversary of the layout. Jim
Located in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. Usually 60-102 degrees and that is only rain, sun, fog, hail, and frost. I use NECO Code 100 Nickel Silver track. I was referred this track as it holds extremely well in the elements. The guy I followed, his layout is many times under snow. www.youtube.com/@metadyneman. He has had his HO Scale Layout in the outdoors for more than 21 years.
Wow, sir! You are very talented and I love your layout! Couple questions, how do you get the custom stations? Do you order them from somewhere that custom makes them for you or are they a line that is out out there to the public or are they all scratch built (if this option, how do you make them if willing to disclose?)? Second, the buildings, cars, and figures all look fresh and untouched by the harsh elements, even just the good amount of sun Dan fade and damage them, how do you keep them so? Do you bring them inside and set them back up when running trains, some type of cover like tarp situation? They look great and if they are newly set outside, I highly recommend using some technique to keep them safe from the elements (seen such amazing outside layouts go slowly down the drain so to the harsh realities of the outside and the lack of maintenance or prevention necessary to keep the models from being destroyed!) Well again, so happy for you and your decision to share your talents with us and happy belated anniversary! To many many years more! (Ps love the huge parking lot around candlestick, one of those things so many modelers skip over but looks prototypical!)
Thanks for the kind words and viewing this video. My apologies for the late reply but I wanted to be sure to give you as much accurate information as possible. Some of the stations were purchased already assembled from eBay (San Jose, Salinas, and Santa Barbara Stations), one at a train show (Glendale Station), and two were custom built (San Luis Obispo and San Diego Stations), and one was ordered from KATO and I personally assembled (San Francisco Station). All surrounding detail was personally my attention to detail and imagination of what I wanted. I always bring the stations, cars, and trucks in the house after each run and set them up prior to. There's so much to clean and prep before each run and the weather wouldn't be friendly to them...just as you mentioned. All water towers stay outside and the material is working very well with the weather. I am truly happy to celebrate 5 years and I'm hoping for many more. A childhood dream that has finally come true to have a large layout before retirement. Lastly, I want to add my layout is 49 inches tall and saves on my back and knees😂 whenever I need to walk (not crawl) under it from time to time. The parking lot for Candlestick Park was created with a yardstick ruler and permanent white marker. With the newly added parking lights, it really brought it to life. Be sure to see that video process when you get a chance. Again, thanks for viewing and please subscribe to my RUclips channel for more video updates.

Have you noticed any damage from the sunlight or worry about it? I want to do something like this, but I've heard that the sunlight can cause fade and cracking on the plastic on HO trains since they're not designed to run outdoors. I thought of laying the tracks on shade only or using UV coating but I'm not sure how effective that would be. I love the layout though
Hello, I have not noticed any sun damage. I can say that I use PECO Code 100 Nickel Silver Concrete track. It was recommended by someone who I found has an outdoor layout for more than 20 years and he runs in the snow. He has given me so much advice. ruclips.net/video/DDjgGJKrsK0/видео.htmlsi=zuoZV-7r7l7oTzcT Oh and my area doesn't get too hot to cause damage. Please keep me posted when you get started.
Thanks for viewing. The entire fence from end to end is 240 ft (so a little more than 480 ft roundtrip). There are more than 30 switches on just the outside portion of this layout.
Bro! Can you still open and close that garage door? if yes, then my mind is blown! I love the SP Daylight. I have one somewhere in my garage. Did you have to order special HO Tracks for outdoors? Great Video!
Yes. My wife and I park both cars in the garage and use it quite frequently. No, I use Peco Code 100 Nickel Silver track. Here is a video when i had to repair the garage door portion of the layout. ruclips.net/video/1m9PccNfg84/видео.htmlsi=tBhFvrrykh2hVprZ
I love this layout but how is the maintenance for the outside for ho scale is it really bad do you have to replace track or replace buildings, scenery?
Maintenance is not that bad at all. My location is not bad when it comes to weather and besides wildlife residue and fallen fruit...it runs quite nicely. My buildings are kept in the house after each run.
Indeed a nice layout. I didn't read the part of it being HO. The smoke part threw me off making me think it was O scale. I have a question on location. What area is this layout located? And if it rains how well does the outdoor drain, handle the water flow?
Thanks for viewing. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Here is the video link of my layout in the rain and answer to your question on performance. ruclips.net/video/fOKF3TqwIHQ/видео.html
Unbelievable. How do you keep the track from oxidizing? Are you using something like in-ox on it? Even if you don't get "a lot" of rain there, you must get something, and dew overnight?
