I can probably see why they changed Spring Yard Zone’s prototype background to what we have now, it is very distracting to see these beautiful flashy signs.
The sounds around 19:00, it sounds like they were gonna add some sort of arcade things. There is the pac man background noise, some atari noise, and arcade sounding sounds

my speculation for those brick areas in labyrnith zone is that was planned for open areas without water so Sonic could breathe. they were probably taken out because the devs couldn't figure a way to properly work those sections in with how the water was coded. if i remember right, that's where air bubble locations were ultimately placed
When I was younger, I had this theory that suggested that Sparkling Zone was actually in the city in the background of Spring Yard Zone. I nicknamed it "Sparkling City."

Scrap Brain Zone Act 3 was originally rumored to be a full level instead of going straight into the "Final Zone" boss, as it looks like you were to climb up the whole thing until you got to Robotnik and fought him in the final battle.
We really need to find that 1990 Tokyo Toy Show build of the game, it seems to have been FAR different from the base game and could possibly have some groundbreaking secrets.
They should've included Sonic's victory pose atleast for the mobile port. 10:31 this background would've been 100% better The prototype background for labyrinth zone would've made the level less stressing

Fun fact:The Giant green hill ball remains unused in the Mobile port of Sonic 1 and can be spawned in using the debug mode...but theres a BIG difference in the mobile version:The giant ball actually works as intended and isn't that glitchy. The ball rolls around down slopes and when you stand on it...and it can crush badniks and crush you too! Meaning these was made more dangerous
Fun fact: the ufos can be placed in with debug mode AND they have a new animation where fade away as they fall from the sky, so they may be added again
Did anyone realize that the Chameleon Bot in Green Hill Zone had a different color ? Prototype remains blue when the Final Version remain green. As for those Chameleon Bot that chase behind you, their color in Prototype were Magenta

Oh, that thing where he sticks to the ceilings is probably a bug brought on by the physics. It's been demonstrated that the physics in Sonic games allows you to stick to ceilings when looping around the OUTSIDE of a rounded corner, which is something the classics rarely gave you an opportunity to do (but later games frequently made a point of doing a lot). Sticking to the ceiling was probably a result of early physics programming not being able to properly tell when Sonic had made contact with a surface out of a jump rather than a run/roll. Fascinating little glitch.
Green Hill Zone, the first second of Marble Zone, Sparkling Zone, Labyrinth Zone, Clock Work Zone, Continue Screen, Ending Sequence, and the End Credits music actually features a much different drum snare than the final version did. This snare was also common in early Megadrive/Genesis games and was even used in Sonic Spinball!

Very happy that this prototype was found and excited to see all the differences between the final game, one of my fav videogames of my childhood
After starlight, when the game fades, you can see sonic's victory animation turn into a jumbled mess
His tile data gets overwritten before he gets rendered useless which makes his victory jump animation a jumbled mess
The music for spring yard zone goes better with the sparkling zone background.
