Well, when you consider that Flying Battery Zone was supposed to appear after Carnival Night Zone, it's normal that it's the most "complete" stage from Sonic & Knuckles (also Sonic was supposed to use one of the door of the Flying Battery as a Snowboard in Ice cap Zone)
Magolord not only that but flying battery being not really erased here is good as is in the final game every sonic and knuckles zone you can get sonic 3 via game genie codes crash the game, but flying battery actually does not crash in the final game but the graphics are erased so flying battery is able to survive the erasure.

1:07 While Sonic 3's final release date was February 2nd, 1994, the game's final _build_ date was November 20th, 1993. This places the prototype 17 days before its eventual completion, not 3 months. 1:55 Honestly, I think this is much easier than having to press ⬆️⬆️⬇️⬇️⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️ during the opening animation mixed with frame lag. 2:24 While it seems that the invincibility stars are absent, they're not; Instead it loads the graphics of the last shield Sonic has gained, as well as Game/Time Overs, if any had occurred prior. 2:31 The glitchy title card is only in Angel Island Act 1, since the waves left by Surfboard Sonic overwrite the zone card graphics. And even then, parts of said waves + the Surfboard itself get overwritten by art used for the monitors, springs and spikes. 2:55 Well, nifty except for one thing; If Tails enters flight mode after making some kind of jump where you can't control the horizontal movement of a character (like a roll, or a jump off a ramp), Tails can't move left or right; It's an absolute bugger in one part of Marble Garden Act 2, where there's that decoy spike enemy instead of regular spikes, and nothing else harming Tails, so if he spindashes, enters flight, and hits the wall, he'll basically be softlocked if you have debug mode turned on. 4:06 It doesn't seem overly glitched, rather the transition palettes weren't finished yet, so it reuses the ones from Sonic 2, which results to why Sonic, when submerged, uses his Chemical Plant water palette. 6:28 If I recall, tcrf.net says that these audio bugs (and stuff like certain missing music cues, and the speed shoes playing the invincibility theme) are due this prototype's unfinished audio engine. Save select music, Act clear jingle, and Left-speaker Ring sound are present in the Sound Test. 8:02 On the opposing side, Jackson's music was composed from around August - September 1993, entirely acapella. From what I gather from BlazeHedgehog, the acapella demo tape was sent to Sega, while at this point, the PC collection music sat as a placeholder until the SMSP recreations of Jackson's tracks were done. Jackson wasn't happy with how it sounded and wanted his name off the music credits. BH described it as a 50/50. 9:05 Again, 2 weeks and 3 days from completion. It would be 9 weeks until the cartridges were produced and put on shelves. 11:06 Why d'ya say it like that all of a sudden? "Sonic Three~" 11:38 I know it's mentioned later, but Flying Battery and remnants of Lava Reef are fully accessible in-game; The latter just needs some modding to function. 11:48 Said music also still exists in the final game, having been completely finalized and sounding exactly as they do in Sonic & Knuckles, and by the time Sonic 3 was finished, even (except for the progressively lagging echo in Flying Battery). On a similar note, some S&K tracks are different here than in the final, most notably Sky Sanctuary and Mushroom Valley. 13:07 Possibly, but I think by this point, Surfboard Sonic was only here just as a placeholder to prevent Angel Island from crashing, by calling a removed object ID. Coding for the object first, and then changing the Object ID call later, I believe is how it was done.. Seems to very well explain why it's still there in Angel Island Act 1's debug list in the final release of Sonic 3. 13:12 I know there's a picture on tcrf.net, but this looks fine to me. 14:00 This can also be done in the final (and in Sonic 3 & Knuckles) by enabling debug while in Angel Island. If you spawn a checkpoint before the camera lock, and die, you'll come back to where that checkpoint is. The garbage + graphically incorrect tree stump still exist. 14:13 & 14:32 Again, accomplishable in the final (except for Sonic 3 & Knuckles, starting with the 0408 proto) 16:19 This is something also in the final; While most zones like Hydrocity and Carnival Night can vertically loop endlessly, their level layouts don't go below coordinate BFF, so everything from C00 - FFF is mostly emptiness/garbage level layouts, never meant to be seen in normal gameplay. 17:15 I'm pretty certain that Sonic running instead of snowboarding was just a placeholder, and not the intended gameplay; According to Sonic Jam, during the time of development when Flying Battery was inbetween Carnival Night and Ice Cap, Sonic was meant to snowboard the giant hill by using the door he busts out of after the Egg Hangar boss. At this point, said snowboarding hadn't been coded yet. 18:57 You can break out of that Egg Carrier with the right objects in debug mode, but you still won't be able to face off against the bosses, since the camera is vertically locked, with no means to land on the red platform. 20:42 Lava Reef's background is fine, this is just a bad rip.
Here’s a theory I have about the music: Maybe MJ and Co. were still working on the music so in the meantime, SEGA just kept on working with the game that had the old music. After they finished with the music, they maybe put it in the game in some later build of the game, and by the time they found out about the allegations of MJ, SEGA couldn’t do much to get rid of any involvement of MJ because they were too close to the release date to be able to swap back to the old music. Which is why we were stuck with the new music.
And of course, further adding, to clear his involvement in the PC rerelease in the 90's they used the music used in those later builds as MIDIs instead.
That’s kinda what I was thinking. I was thinking that the last few weeks were the time frame where they started final testing and inputting the finalized music and that’s why it’s still the old music.
The reason some of the music MJ composed was retained in the final version of the game was because he never requested it to be removed and Sega didn't want to remove all of it. The removal of some MJ music in Sonic 3 wasn't because of the false allegations made against him, it was because Jackson was dissatisfied with the Sega Genesis sound chip. Brad Buxer confirmed this.
Makes sense that Flying Battery is the only "complete" S&K level since that level was meant to be between Carnival Night Zone and Ice Cap Zone in Sonic 3. In fact, Sonic's "snowboard" was meant to be a metal door from the Flying Battery that he uses once he breaks out of the airship. I'm pretty sure this is recreated in Sonic 3 & Knuckles COMPLETE

My take on the music change: Chances are that Sega had first tried to cut Michael’s music altogether, but due to not having enough time to finish the new music, they decided to keep the original and just scrub his credit. The prototype Hidden Palace found was in the middle of the creation of the replacement music.
My thoughts are that the prototype music is what they wanted to use when Sonic 3 was one big game, but they changed the music to make those zones have darker music since they're going to end the game rather than be the midpoint.

18:09 Patience is the key, the tower doesn't colapse but the timer is still programmed to allow the player to move to the next section. Not to mention that the gravity section from Death Egg Zone is used in this boss fight, but I don't think it's the same feature.
Weird how there would be so many differences and unused/unfinished content when the game was just a few months from being on the shelves...I guess cartridge games didn't take long to fix up
Games used to be simpler... though they had to work with much more restrictive hardware as consoles and the development tools weren't an iota as powerful as they are these days. Tech has come a long way in a very short time. If you're interested in some of the development tricks that some teams used at the time though, there's a channel called GameHut, the owner of the channel (Jon Burton) puts up videos every so often from projects from back when he used to work on Sonic 3D Blast.
Distilt They often had small teams, and took much less time to finish than newer games, but it still took huge dedication And time from programmers. Megaman 7 on SNES was completed in just 3 MONTHS.
Fun fact: Angel island wasn't the name for the entire island itself until Sonic adventure. The original name for the entire island was "the floating island". Angel island was only the name for the first zone at the time.
There is one other thing. Selecting IceCap Zone Act 2 takes you to just before the act 1 boss and dying in act 2 without a checkpoint takes you to just before the act 1 boss. So you have to fight the boss either way.
HOLD THE FREAKING PHONE! That PROTOTYPE Knuckles theme was TOTALLY in that PC Sonic Collection i had back in the day... DID THEY JUST NOT PORT THE GAME!? Even the Boss theme was different in the Genisis version
Yeah they used this soundtrack from I think before Micheal Jackson got involved with the soundtrack. Basically, this soundtrack is before Micheal Jackson. The final game has Micheal Jackson soundtrack. They used the soundtrack from before Micheal Jackson (this prototype soundtrack) in that collection.
14:07 I'm thinking that "garbage" has to be a remnant of something, could either be remnants of a longer version of one of the existing intro sequences or perhaps a third option besides "surfboard" and "Tornado" was considered at some point.
So if Sega has all this non-Michael Jackson Sonic 3 music, can't they just that back in and avoid the (alleged?) legal troubles that prevents it getting ports?
It got ported to the Nintendo DS in the Sonic Classics Collection so I'm not sure why they're claiming now that music rights prevent them from doing ports.
@@r3cycledPl4stic The rights issues may have only come up since those releases. Historically Sonic 3 was ported many times, but more recently it was blocked on mobile and isn't on the Genesis mini. One of the writers went to court, I think.
And another problem is that not everyone likes the Prototype music, so i guess SEGA’s point of view is ‘What’s the point of replacing the music if people are just going to complain about it?’
@@r3cycledPl4stic honestly the most likely explanation I've seen is that there was a comfortable don't talk about it in place until fans started digging into it... Oops

11:26 Fun Fact: Did you know by the time sonic 3 release, McDonald's release several promotions of toys, including come with happy meal bag. But did you know the happy meal bag have a back side of fun activity base on sonic 3 level, there's a one level that it's gonna Originate be, which is flying battery zone in sonic 3, but Sega decided to put sonic and knuckles instead. It's seem felt anyone know this is clearly new level that sega never made this level in sonic 3 until 6 months later sonic and knuckles is release.
@sonic ishmail khamara Yeah probably got cut. Surprised he didn't even mention them though. Either that or they're just like super rare in the actual game.
Was going to ask that. I have no idea but there's no information anywhere about it. It's probably been cut off, since there's no footage of it nor people that got it.
The special stage tech demo things are so cool to think about. I like to imagine the coder was like, "guys look at how this came out," and everyone was just amazed
i think i discovered something really interesting, theres a code in the game "Ristar" that lets you see the galaxy, it seems like it uses the same engine(?) of the Special Stage tests in this Prototype
I have a theory that the drop dash in this prototype was to test a mechanic in Sky Sanctuary, because there’s a spike hazard that swings around that Sonic can jump into in the final game, and there is one that when it touches the ground with Sonic in it, he will dash out of it in a similar fashion to the drop dash in the prototype.
1:35 Spot the difference. Also, in the last frame before the title screen’s background appears, you can see the full body of Sonic on the final version’s title.
Note: while the date on EEPROM's says Novermber 3rd, the rom's Header states that it was built earlier than that, sometime in october. so it's more likely that at this point more work was done on the game but people at sonic team just decided to write and older version for the SEGA Magazine because that was the first thing they had at hand and was somewhat functional. EDIT: 14:05. this is also in the final game. it's the graphics used when player enters that big pipe thing at 2:56, you know that effect when you enter it the game shows you what's inside of it? it's for that. it's just that the intro uses a separate tileset for the beach and such then swaps it out with the main tileset when the stage begins. that's why the graphics are garbled.
Hm, maybe that sprite was never edited, and was the same all throughout the prototype. Perhaps the sprite was edited throughout and they just didn't have the main knuckles sprite in angel island.
There's also like 30 other reasons for it having different music. I think that they could have simply pushed out a prototype to test the various aspects of the game. They either had the tracks and needed to properly implement them like looping and compression or they were working in parallel and the tracks were on the way still, maybe tied up in some meetings for approval
Hey, tetra! A few months ago, hidden palace released a pre-final dev tape from only a few days before release for sonic 3. It would be cool to see that covered in a smaller video. Some people have already pointed out the difference emerald colors and some level layout changes.
Here's another thing. In Angel Island, if you get out the water during the drowning theme , the theme will continue, and silence will be heard after. No music whatsoever.

Fun fact: Angel island wasn't the name for the entire island itself until Sonic adventure. The original name for the entire island was "the floating island". Angel island was only the name for the first zone at the time.
*Tetra talks about sonic 3 prototypes*
Everybody liked that.
this video has a few dislikes though

they both sound great idk which one is better
There is one other thing. Selecting IceCap Zone Act 2 takes you to just before the act 1 boss and dying in act 2 without a checkpoint takes you to just before the act 1 boss. So you have to fight the boss either way.
12:34 all-right sonic, hand me all the prototypes and tetrabitgamig merchandise and his hole channel now
*whole
2:33 WOAH I GOT THOUGH ACT 1!!!!
14:33 The Phantom Ruby! 🛑
@@SluggishRain if this is from Nov 93, Jackson was accused in August 93. Makes sense the proto music was suppose to replace his work
@@2097xl den why df they put the old music back in

14:07 I'm thinking that "garbage" has to be a remnant of something, could either be remnants of a longer version of one of the existing intro sequences or perhaps a third option besides "surfboard" and "Tornado" was considered at some point.
22:19 that rings looks very gold-ish tbh
Oops

Someone must have washed Super Sonic in with the pink cloths.
0:53 wait, i'll get my old sock which has a Sonic on it. (Well, it's with me since when i was going to 4th grade.)

in my opinion... they tryed to remove and swap the music after MJ help... showed to the directors the musics... they said its okay and feels no MJ involved... launch it right away! and than, they swapped the musics again without anyone knowing and started selling since already had the approve XD
18:26 kinda sounds like something
out of an atari game
The one game I was waiting for you to make a video about, and I missed the upload by a day. ARGHEBHA
I wasn’t expecting you here
10:47 this song was actually used as the ending for the knuckles story In both endings without being remixed
11:26 Fun Fact:
Did you know by the time sonic 3 release, McDonald's release several promotions of toys, including come with happy meal bag.
The ground!? But thx
Your english is fucking atrocious
19:17 "Hey this is fun to What the fuck"
How simple it would have been if the original composer had stayed.
12:20
I think The cutscene had sonic on a surfboard and tails behind him in the tornado like it shows
I want an Ice Cap/Hard Times mashup that sounds EXACTLY like 8:42.
I think there might be a few remixes on RUclips, and if you mean speed, just play at 1.25x speed 😎
@@TetraBitGaming I don't think that exact mashup exists yet.

6:28 will be used on my new upcoming tv show
3:53 Sonic: HAH! You think you have the better of me,Goku?
Allow me to show you...
*SUPER ROSE*
Super sonics music for the prototype is similiar for me S3C music?
This is so awesome to see. Thanks for the video explaining everything. :)
Thanks for watching!

Christopher Moon why are you everywhere
Christopher Moon another joke based comment... c’mon now you are being lazy.
Are you stalking me?
Wut
Bad joke. Not true, nor funny.
4:25
Thats my character
12:29 There's a creepy little bird behind Sonic there.
18:05 it used the final Knux the enchilada sprite but earlier it used a different one?
Hm, maybe that sprite was never edited, and was the same all throughout the prototype. Perhaps the sprite was edited throughout and they just didn't have the main knuckles sprite in angel island.
There's also like 30 other reasons for it having different music. I think that they could have simply pushed out a prototype to test the various aspects of the game. They either had the tracks and needed to properly implement them like looping and compression or they were working in parallel and the tracks were on the way still, maybe tied up in some meetings for approval
From 10:01-11:05 (except the credits one) Why did the remove the prototypes! They were dare I say, SLAPPIN’ BANGERS!
I agree, but I think the final version of Ice Cap is a bigger bop
Hard Times and Ice Cap Act 1 overlapping each other is pretty dope.
This is why I subscribed..
Lost bits and prototypes.
Keep up the good work
2:56 notice as tails the picture in the corner is a picture of sonic not tails?
hey what about the air dash and ring throw habilities :V
Game genie, brother. Game Genie.
been waiting for this! Hope you do a Plants vs Zombies lost bits!
Hey, tetra! A few months ago, hidden palace released a pre-final dev tape from only a few days before release for sonic 3. It would be cool to see that covered in a smaller video. Some people have already pointed out the difference emerald colors and some level layout changes.
Fr? Do you have the link or a video showing what it was like I’d love to see it! (If you want I can spam on tetras videos telling about it)
@@AmongusBalls65 ruclips.net/video/p3jwwAW3vjs/видео.html
It’s a real VHS recording from a few days before release
Here's another thing.
In Angel Island, if you get out the water during the drowning theme , the theme will continue, and silence will be heard after. No music whatsoever.
1:07 - Is that the barrel of hell that people kept on getting stuck on? If it's not, it looks impossible and stupid.
Nope its not
Drop dash confirmed? 3:45
Sure it was not influenced 👽
7:20 what's that weird invisiblity shiny thing?
Invincibility Box (it has glitched graphics)
it has the fire shield sprites

Blood on Knuckles' Dance Floor.
8:44
Icy Times
10:30 I think this is better than the prototype
20:04 More like Missingno. Valley Zone 😂
I think that scale thing on 14:44 was used for Marble Garden act 2 boss, since when Robotnik flies away, the sprite is being shrunk in the process.
4:05 That music sounded like some music unused from sonic 3d blast
