I honestly think Arcade1up should just release full sized remakes of the original cabinets, that are more dedicated to their games. I would 10000% buy them. Ive been looking at Arcade1ups progress for a few years now, and im pretty impressed of how far theyve came since when they started. But full sized dedicated cabs would be the way to go. Id hope other people would feel the same, but i wanna be able to put A1U cabs next to my real one and it blend in pretty well haha (Preferably with an operating coin door 😶)
It would be more expensive. The reason arcade 1up sells well is because of the novelty of cute smaller size. Also most people don't have as much space in their homes for a full size cab. Don't get me wrong. A full size would be nice, but I'm just happy to get these versions.
As an owner of real arcade cabinets, I am probably biased, but i cannot get into these 1up machines. I bought a Street Fighter Vs X-men which was my first experience with 1Ups from Wal-mart, and for the cost, it's just not worth it, these toys, and that's what they are, toys, are not near the quality they should be for the price. The particle board is very cheap, there's a reason why the instructions state to not use power tools as you'll blast the wood apart if you tighten the screws to much, just hand tightening I had wood split on the riser, which in again is another issue I have with these, it's a total scam to spend $300 on a machine and then another $40 on a riser just so you can play it at normal height. ( i know the machine in this video comes with it, which is why it cost more the price is built in, I'm talking about non riser units, they ALL should have risers IMO). Wal-mart $20 book shelf can provide stickers to cover up the screw holes, but a $400 Arcade 1up, nope, can't bother with that to make the machine more aesthetically pleasing. Comparing the controls to my Neo Geo MVS, it's night and day, i have a hard time pulling off dragon punch and similar joystick motions on the 1up where i have no problem on the MVS, both units are micro switched so I'm assuming the 1up's are the bottom of the barrel cheapest they could find. I get the appeal of these 1ups, they are compact but let's be real, these units shouldn't really cost more than $250. I doubt I will buy another one unless it's something I absolutely have to have, like maybe a House of the Dead, or i find them really really cheaply.
As someone who is lucky enough to own about a dozen original arcade machines from the ‘80s I was hesitant to go down the Arcade 1up road. Once I saw the game line up I decided to bite the bullet and pull the trigger on my first Arcade 1up with the Midway Legacy. I freaking love it!!! Putting it together was a bit of a challenge making sure everything was lined up perfectly but other than that I love the cabinet design and the games. Looking at getting the X-men cabinet next.
Do either of you kill the other player (if you are playing solo) for the points? I always got rid of him as soon as possible. I remember playing it at Circus Circus. I was walking towards it and it was talking to me. Instantly hooked. Feels like yesterday. Loved it on my C-64 (wish the speech module wasn’t so expensive back then).
This wave is not rubbin' me right. PAPERBOY DOES NOT belong on this cab at all. It needs it own cabinet with the handlebars and Hang-On or sumn on it. Just waiting for KILLER INSTINCT at this point.
I was going to get the more recent Legacy cabs, until I found out about the TN monitors in them. So, I had to wait for this cab to go on sale, at A1up, and just get it, as it has the BOE monitor. Sadly, they "did" come out with the dedicated cab for Defender, but they biffed the deal with that cheap TN monitor. Such a letdown. At least the Defender Partycade has the BOE monitor. I suppose, at some point, I could get the Defender cab, and move the Partycade's monitor and PCB into it. Options. LOL Thanks for the review.

I just got mine two days ago i am 5’9 . the cab is pretty but its very very poorly designed . its the worst cabinet made to date by arcade 1up. This is such a let down and i regret selling the old MK2 i had. i am going to create a pedestal five inch tall to try and correct the visibility issue. also how can they make a shorter cab then the others. i am pissed. the midway cab is uncomfortable garbage and could start to smell BAD.
Defender needs it's own cabinet because doing the reverse on the joystick or using a button far away from your thumb doesn't make the game too playable.I'm an ex-Defender-Stargate champion lol
Everytime I have hope for Arcade1UP, issues present themselves. IMO the pros do not outweigh the cons from that control panel, design and button use from the gamelist. A dedicated MK list of games and better execution of design could have made this release shine.
Great review that aligns with the consensus to-date: software great, coin door good (goodbye, game logos!)... BUT, they basically fubar'd the design with the vertical monitor, the ears around the marquee, controls that are too tight, and sides that overlap the control panel. It's frustrating to have to continually mod these cabs just to get something halfway authentic (i.e., playable).

Try playing with 2 players and see if you still don't think that ledge is an issue....as long as you don't mind not seeing the top of the screen and scraping the skin off the side your hand, this cabinet is a must buy!
Have to sit down to play was a bigger issue for me. I saw some folks added some washers and things to theirs to raise up the control deck and now that I have some peeling, will probably do the same.
Nice review.... I still say 1up should have added Timber to this cabinet... it's a great companion piece to tapper. It's created by the same person who did tapper and it has a similar control scheme.. and it's fun!
Yes!!! Timber is a great game and since tapper uses both sticks it could have worked. They should remove paper boy since it’s on joy stick and add Timber. Paper boy should be it’s own cab even if it’s one player.
PDubs do you think the walmart version of this cabinet is worth it at 315.00 or should I look toward the defender cabinet that has the same games. I’m thinking about if they bring out Mortal Kombat in 2022 with WiFi i know I’m going to want that. What are your thoughts?

I would love to test them out and provide extremely detailed instructions on how to make the cabs look perfect and accurate. I have the attention to detail that is needed for making true to the original replica cabinets.
Does the scan line setting on make it look like an old school arcade mk instead of sharp pixels? I have the original arcade 1up mk and it doesn't have that setting
Love Mr. Pueblo's MK Cabinet! If I could buy that design out of box I would right now! The Arcade1up cab looks pretty nice, I don't understand why they made the Legends shorter? My daughter and wife want this cab, they like Rampage, PaperBoy, and Root Beer Tapper. I know, MAME right.... Seems like some folks with larger hands are going to destroy their side graphics with this winged control panel.. I'd rather have seen that screen kicked back a bit too. Good review PDubs! 😎👍
You didn't mention one BIG factor when it comes to the MK games on this cab... You can't save, including the EJB menus. So the secret characters in UMK3, have to be unlocked EVERYTIME you turn the cab on. That's a BIG oversight imo. It also adds credence that the original 1up MK cab, is STILL the best one (unless you are buying it for root beer tapper, or another one of the additional games). But for actually playing the MK games, it appears to be inferior to the original. I don't own the cab, so I'm basing this around what others have said. But not having FULL ACCESS to the dip switch and EJB menus is rather disappointing imo. Having said that, I don't believe that Arcade1up EVER meant for the dip switch and EJB menus to be accessible on the original MK cabs, I believe that was an oversight as well. But that was a WELCOMED oversight. While what they did with this legacy cab, is a dissapointing oversight. I am happy with my original cab, and will not be purchasing the legacy version.
Fantastic cab with a couple of odd design choices. My biggest problem was the kickplate not being slide in anymore. Made assembly really annoying. Absolutely love the lineup of games and options. Already changed buttons, tension springs and installed octagonal gates. The ledge hasn't become a problem yet. I actually ordered a games logo kickplate overlay. I think I'll like that better. Go to Defender options and change the controls. Whamo, much better.
Wizard of Wor was a blast when I was a kid. It was the first video game I could play at the same time with a friend. A laundromat near my house had it for years along with Pac-man " I never liked that game". Sadly the owner died and his son took over and got rid of both games and replaced them with random games every few months. Wizard of Wor is the main reason I want to buy that Cab
Great review sir. I have a friend that has this cabinet, I grabbed the namco version, and while it is a great cabinet the problems you mention are definitely noticeable. We had to sit down to play it but still had a great time.
Smash TV and Total Carnage are GREAT games that I'm surprised A1UP HASNT put on a cab yet. Having said that, they require specific controls, so maybe that's why they are missing. They might have thought people would not accept that control scheme change. But again, it's not like paperboy is accurate, lol.
Wow - that height of screen issue is a major bummer. Modders will have fun with it, but I'm starting to wonder if A1up is placing aesthetics above playability. Awesome review as always Dubs!
1up has ALWAYS placed aesthetics over gameplay. Example, all pinballs look great! but they are 720p and can't be played with animations on... white water is unplayable to boot. I can name 20 more examples like this. The 1up defenders said "who cares its only720p" then they actually played it and saw the blurriness.
PDubs, Great review! Though it baffles me why Robotron wasn't included in the place of either Paperboy or Defender. The twin stick controls are already built in and placed perfectly. Like this cabinet's design, sometimes Arcade1up baffles me. Maybe getting Robotron was a licensing issue. Wizard of Wor, though a great edition to this cabinet, and I have played it on a stand-up machine without issue, it's much better suited to a cocktail cabinet. Maybe a possible Midway Classic Cocktail edition? Yeah, reviews have kept me anchored to holding off buying any more products from Arcade1up until they can release another gem like Star Wars Arcade. Arcade1up saying they listen to the community is one thing, actually doing something about it is an entirely different thing. I guess they have the first part down. Have a great one! vgv
just wait another year and they'll be a new Midway Legacy edition with NBA Jam and NFL Blitz included... this one was disappointing compared to the Capcom one... but again, wait a year and you'll get a new Capcom Legacy edition with the Marvel, X-Men, Punisher games included.
I have a Capcom Legacy and an original MKII 1up cab. Both are fine for my height, but i'm only 5' 4" . I can't stand up and play the original MKII because the colors look washed out if I am standing. So I've always just had to sit to play it. Street Fighter I can stand and play perfectly, but again, I'm short. While it's great to be able to stand up to play the games, I am content just to have these machines in my home, as I always dreamed of owning one someday, when I was a kid. If I have to sit to play them, that's a small price to pay to be able to have them. I have modded the MKII now, and even with scanlines, etc. , I can't stand and play it without it looking washed out. The monitor on the Legacy cab is improved in this way and doesn't look like that, when viewing from different angles. I didn't buy the Midway Legacy because I don't like the inaccurate colors on the side art. Raiden is not supposed to have peachy skin, and the sky is not supposed to be THAT blue. I modded the original cab, inside and out (coin door sticker, MKII lightning and dragon artwork on "J" panel, light up marquee, added missing midway logos, got new bezel with original bezel art and without 1up logo, MIDWAY sticker from the back of an actual MKII cab reprinted and put on the back, in place of 1UP stickers, new control panel with exact artwork from original cab -- includes the two dragon logos in the left and right corners that are not there on the 1up version and with true arcade quality controls, painted back cover black, flat screws with washers on control panel) and it looks as close to a mini replica as you can get, whereas if I wanted to make the Legacy cab look like an original cab, I'd need to replace the art on the entire cabinet. Even the control panel is inaccurate (they reversed the locations of the MIDWAY and MKII logos). Only thing I could not fix without getting new side art was that the right side panel is supposed to have the dragon facing left in the left corner and MKII in the right corner. I would have thought all of those things would be fixed on the art for the legacy cab, but instead they made it even less accurate. So despite having scanlines, it was not worth the upgrade for me. I just put a Pi in it with scanlines instead. It is set to boot up to a menu with just the MK games listed. It looks similar to the menu on your legacy cab, but with only the MK games. They are displayed in boxes, and arranged the same way. I would love to see them do an MK1 cab with Johnny Cage side art, as that is my fav MK cab and still my fav MK game!
Just wondering for people 6ft like myself, is it possible to use 2 risers instead of one? What the hell were these people thinking putting it for only short people rather that at the very least of average height
I’m torn ….my wife loves mortal combat and I love Wizard or Wor , joust and a few others . I’m wondering with the control panels edges are a complete deal breaker . I do have small hands and so does my wife but we will want to play 2 players . Thoughts ?
i love that mortal kombat exists but the second i saw that block button in the arcades in 1991, i said goodbye. i can't think to press that button to block. it is not intuitive for me. i simply just wanna hold back like in SF2. they should have tilted the monitor and gotten rid of the sides where the stick and buttons are (the mvc cabinet has done this by making the control panel flat)
Have preordered my Atari legacy but now think I have to get this one too, ugh wife is going to laugh at me if I pull the trigger, just waiting for some more overtime pay in a week or 2

I just ordered mine. I may take some notes on the custom mod you showed off, but I may set the actual marquee light farther up and just fill the old hole with some wood filler.
At this point im kinda done with Arcade1Up (Unless Donkey Kong cab). I'll keep enjoying the cabs i own but not interested in any more purchases. They had the opportunity with these Legacy cabs to knock it out of the park and once again..they fall short. By now the "ingredients" are all there, written like a recipe on paper but A1Up simply refuse to follow it. We still! see problems we had from wave 1 cabs smh

And now I have this happening. Left panel top back art has come off. I've been defending this cab but walking out and seeing that today was really irritating. Bought Krazy glue. Pretty damn ridiculous.
I have MK2 on very easy and once you get to the 4th fight or so, the AI gets a lot harder. I was a good 20 minutes and like 10 to 15 continues before I gave up. Is this normal?
Is it hard to play on ? Like could I do combos like on the ds or ps3 for ultimate? Never played on an arcade, alwyas heard it’s the way to play a fighting game But I just wonder with these sticks and buttons if it’s easy, hard or even possible to play pro
I am already being sent a replacement PCB for freezing and boot up failures. I also submitted another ticket regarding MK3U hidden character unlocks not being saved when you exit the game. I also got the 4" add on riser for the line of site issue. Gonna paint it red.

Defender has an alternative control setup . simpler, better, check it out for sure....i agree paperboy is a bit weird, but i never really liked it anyway...liked watching paperboy but i was always horrible at playing it
Ugh. Man I’m so disappointed in the design of the screen angle and height. If anything they need to make cabs a little bigger, not shorter! I really wanted one of the legacy cabs but I’ll wait for the next design. Thanks for the great review!
It’s garbage how they took one step forward and two steps back but great thing from Juan Pablo that’s exactly what I wanted! That looks legit I even messaged arcade1up all those fixes and they told me thanks for the ideas but basically brushed them off I wish they would have listened or hopefully they will see that guys and make them like he did that’s proof it can be done either I would do it his way or wait till Arcade1up gets their head out of their asses and really listens to the community and makes them more true to the real thing
idk if anyones said it already but defender can be changed in settings to "simplified controls" and its an easy joystick navigation rather than the buttons for navigation. paper boy allows for joystick and buttons navigation it doesnt need to be changed in settings you can just do whatever during the game. its so much easier and much more enjoyable!! im surprised they set paperboy on medium hard difficulty for default that game is damn near impossible
Toobin and Bubbles are both games I never thought id like, but man they are both so addictive...the music in Toobin is just amazing....love all the games on this cab...I for one am glad I got it.
I am glad this is an evergreen cab as I do want one eventually. I am jiat not ready for it right now until i make a bigger space. Maybe they will fix the angles for the second run. Even so, i would get it in it's current condition.

PDubs do you think the walmart version of this cabinet is worth it at 315.00 or should I look toward the defender cabinet that has the same games. I’m thinking about if they bring out Mortal Kombat in 2022 with WiFi i know I’m going to want that. What are your thoughts?

I would love to test them out and provide extremely detailed instructions on how to make the cabs look perfect and accurate. I have the attention to detail that is needed for making true to the original replica cabinets.

ouch i wouldn't do that - but you can find some 'risers for your risers' on etsy, etc. check out buy stuff store, buy stuff arcades, etc.
Does the scan line setting on make it look like an old school arcade mk instead of sharp pixels? I have the original arcade 1up mk and it doesn't have that setting

Love Mr. Pueblo's MK Cabinet! If I could buy that design out of box I would right now! The Arcade1up cab looks pretty nice, I don't understand why they made the Legends shorter? My daughter and wife want this cab, they like Rampage, PaperBoy, and Root Beer Tapper. I know, MAME right.... Seems like some folks with larger hands are going to destroy their side graphics with this winged control panel.. I'd rather have seen that screen kicked back a bit too. Good review PDubs! 😎👍

My marquee looks washed out. It's hard to explain exactly, it just isn't great.
You didn't mention one BIG factor when it comes to the MK games on this cab... You can't save, including the EJB menus. So the secret characters in UMK3, have to be unlocked EVERYTIME you turn the cab on. That's a BIG oversight imo. It also adds credence that the original 1up MK cab, is STILL the best one (unless you are buying it for root beer tapper, or another one of the additional games). But for actually playing the MK games, it appears to be inferior to the original.
I don't own the cab, so I'm basing this around what others have said. But not having FULL ACCESS to the dip switch and EJB menus is rather disappointing imo.
Having said that, I don't believe that Arcade1up EVER meant for the dip switch and EJB menus to be accessible on the original MK cabs, I believe that was an oversight as well. But that was a WELCOMED oversight. While what they did with this legacy cab, is a dissapointing oversight.
I am happy with my original cab, and will not be purchasing the legacy version.
That's true I missed out on the EJB Menus, I should've brought that up my apologies but what you are saying is accurate they don't save.

Fantastic cab with a couple of odd design choices. My biggest problem was the kickplate not being slide in anymore. Made assembly really annoying. Absolutely love the lineup of games and options. Already changed buttons, tension springs and installed octagonal gates. The ledge hasn't become a problem yet. I actually ordered a games logo kickplate overlay. I think I'll like that better.
Go to Defender options and change the controls. Whamo, much better.
Wizard of Wor was a blast when I was a kid. It was the first video game I could play at the same time with a friend. A laundromat near my house had it for years along with Pac-man " I never liked that game". Sadly the owner died and his son took over and got rid of both games and replaced them with random games every few months. Wizard of Wor is the main reason I want to buy that Cab

Great review sir. I have a friend that has this cabinet, I grabbed the namco version, and while it is a great cabinet the problems you mention are definitely noticeable. We had to sit down to play it but still had a great time.

This cab would have been alot better if some of the extra games included Primal Rage, Smash TV, Total Carnage, Narc and Pit Fighter

Smash TV and Total Carnage are GREAT games that I'm surprised A1UP HASNT put on a cab yet. Having said that, they require specific controls, so maybe that's why they are missing. They might have thought people would not accept that control scheme change. But again, it's not like paperboy is accurate, lol.
Wow - that height of screen issue is a major bummer. Modders will have fun with it, but I'm starting to wonder if A1up is placing aesthetics above playability. Awesome review as always Dubs!
That's an excellent point my friend. Possibly what happened here.
1up has ALWAYS placed aesthetics over gameplay. Example, all pinballs look great! but they are 720p and can't be played with animations on... white water is unplayable to boot. I can name 20 more examples like this. The 1up defenders said "who cares its only720p" then they actually played it and saw the blurriness.

Great review! Though it baffles me why Robotron wasn't included in the place of either Paperboy or Defender. The twin stick controls are already built in and placed perfectly. Like this cabinet's design, sometimes Arcade1up baffles me. Maybe getting Robotron was a licensing issue.
Wizard of Wor, though a great edition to this cabinet, and I have played it on a stand-up machine without issue, it's much better suited to a cocktail cabinet. Maybe a possible Midway Classic Cocktail edition?
Yeah, reviews have kept me anchored to holding off buying any more products from Arcade1up until they can release another gem like Star Wars Arcade. Arcade1up saying they listen to the community is one thing, actually doing something about it is an entirely different thing. I guess they have the first part down.

just wait another year and they'll be a new Midway Legacy edition with NBA Jam and NFL Blitz included... this one was disappointing compared to the Capcom one... but again, wait a year and you'll get a new Capcom Legacy edition with the Marvel, X-Men, Punisher games included.
I have a Capcom Legacy and an original MKII 1up cab. Both are fine for my height, but i'm only 5' 4" . I can't stand up and play the original MKII because the colors look washed out if I am standing. So I've always just had to sit to play it. Street Fighter I can stand and play perfectly, but again, I'm short. While it's great to be able to stand up to play the games, I am content just to have these machines in my home, as I always dreamed of owning one someday, when I was a kid. If I have to sit to play them, that's a small price to pay to be able to have them. I have modded the MKII now, and even with scanlines, etc. , I can't stand and play it without it looking washed out. The monitor on the Legacy cab is improved in this way and doesn't look like that, when viewing from different angles. I didn't buy the Midway Legacy because I don't like the inaccurate colors on the side art. Raiden is not supposed to have peachy skin, and the sky is not supposed to be THAT blue. I modded the original cab, inside and out (coin door sticker, MKII lightning and dragon artwork on "J" panel, light up marquee, added missing midway logos, got new bezel with original bezel art and without 1up logo, MIDWAY sticker from the back of an actual MKII cab reprinted and put on the back, in place of 1UP stickers, new control panel with exact artwork from original cab -- includes the two dragon logos in the left and right corners that are not there on the 1up version and with true arcade quality controls, painted back cover black, flat screws with washers on control panel) and it looks as close to a mini replica as you can get, whereas if I wanted to make the Legacy cab look like an original cab, I'd need to replace the art on the entire cabinet. Even the control panel is inaccurate (they reversed the locations of the MIDWAY and MKII logos). Only thing I could not fix without getting new side art was that the right side panel is supposed to have the dragon facing left in the left corner and MKII in the right corner. I would have thought all of those things would be fixed on the art for the legacy cab, but instead they made it even less accurate. So despite having scanlines, it was not worth the upgrade for me. I just put a Pi in it with scanlines instead. It is set to boot up to a menu with just the MK games listed. It looks similar to the menu on your legacy cab, but with only the MK games. They are displayed in boxes, and arranged the same way. I would love to see them do an MK1 cab with Johnny Cage side art, as that is my fav MK cab and still my fav MK game!

I’m torn ….my wife loves mortal combat and I love Wizard or Wor , joust and a few others . I’m wondering with the control panels edges are a complete deal breaker . I do have small hands and so does my wife but we will want to play 2 players . Thoughts ?

i love that mortal kombat exists but the second i saw that block button in the arcades in 1991, i said goodbye. i can't think to press that button to block. it is not intuitive for me. i simply just wanna hold back like in SF2. they should have tilted the monitor and gotten rid of the sides where the stick and buttons are (the mvc cabinet has done this by making the control panel flat)

I really like this cab but I like standing to play as well.
I prefer to stand and play..there are risers in ebay and etsy that would help.
I just ordered mine. I may take some notes on the custom mod you showed off, but I may set the actual marquee light farther up and just fill the old hole with some wood filler.

They had the opportunity with these Legacy cabs to knock it out of the park and once again..they fall short. By now the "ingredients" are all there, written like a recipe on paper but A1Up simply refuse to follow it. We still! see problems we had from wave 1 cabs smh

I have MK2 on very easy and once you get to the 4th fight or so, the AI gets a lot harder. I was a good 20 minutes and like 10 to 15 continues before I gave up. Is this normal?
Is it hard to play on ? Like could I do combos like on the ds or ps3 for ultimate?

I am already being sent a replacement PCB for freezing and boot up failures. I also submitted another ticket regarding MK3U hidden character unlocks not being saved when you exit the game. I also got the 4" add on riser for the line of site issue. Gonna paint it red.

Defender has an alternative control setup . simpler, better, check it out for sure....i agree paperboy is a bit weird, but i never really liked it anyway...liked watching paperboy but i was always horrible at playing it
Ugh. Man I’m so disappointed in the design of the screen angle and height. If anything they need to make cabs a little bigger, not shorter! I really wanted one of the legacy cabs but I’ll wait for the next design. Thanks for the great review!

It’s garbage how they took one step forward and two steps back but great thing from Juan Pablo that’s exactly what I wanted! That looks legit I even messaged arcade1up all those fixes and they told me thanks for the ideas but basically brushed them off I wish they would have listened or hopefully they will see that guys and make them like he did that’s proof it can be done either I would do it his way or wait till Arcade1up gets their head out of their asses and really listens to the community and makes them more true to the real thing
Do the joysticks need to be modded on this version
idk if anyones said it already but defender can be changed in settings to "simplified controls" and its an easy joystick navigation rather than the buttons for navigation. paper boy allows for joystick and buttons navigation it doesnt need to be changed in settings you can just do whatever during the game. its so much easier and much more enjoyable!! im surprised they set paperboy on medium hard difficulty for default that game is damn near impossible

Toobin and Bubbles are both games I never thought id like, but man they are both so addictive...the music in Toobin is just amazing....love all the games on this cab...I for one am glad I got it.

toobin' is a hilarious FUN game way underrated, never came to a console in its arcade glory (tengen made it on NES i think)

I am glad this is an evergreen cab as I do want one eventually. I am jiat not ready for it right now until i make a bigger space. Maybe they will fix the angles for the second run. Even so, i would get it in it's current condition.
