  • Today we are unboxing and setting up the Festool TS 75 Track Saw. I go over all of the adjustments and then we make a cut on a river table project. I also talk about why I chose Festool over other brands for my woodworking projects. This is not an inexpensive machine as is the case with most quality products and we discuss that too.

    Digging the video. Im at 4:41. I saw that you were checking square and had a typical hardware store square. I know a little and I know that someone watching a video on a Festool TS 75 track saw is probably pretty motivated to be accurate. It's expensive and people spend the money to improve their job with high quality tools. With that being said, my tone of this comment is instructional and not accusatory or mean spirited. I'm a fact guy. I use RUclips all the time to find out things I never learned or to find new ways for something I have been doing wrong forever. So, what I've personally learned about truing blades is that the square needs to be 100 percent accurate if you are making persuasion cuts. Most inexpensive squares are off. I learned this with me truing my table saw. I had a really nice $10.00 square from Ace Hardware. I went through the process and thought I was golden! Then I did the 4 cut test with some plywood and found out that I was off. I checked again with my square and it was dead on. I said to myself, "My square must be off!" I started reading more and more about this and found out there is a general consensus of fine woodworking professionals that you need to pay big buck for an accurate square to true up your tools. I was looking at Starrett and Woodpeckers squares and the cost hundreds of dollars. Well, if you are cutting wood for cabinets, etc. then you need to spend the money. I almost bit the bullet and got some, and I still want one, but I found that the cheapest solution is to purchase a plastic drafting square from a place like Stapes. It's maybe 5 or 6 bucks. I accurately re-calibrated my table saw blade using this cheap square and did my test cuts. It was dead on perfect and no doubt 100 percent true. It was a lesson learned and I took the time to type all this to help someone else in my position. Also, don't trust cheap levels. Also, on my miter saw, I found that the platform on both sides was off by a 32nd to 64th. I used blue painters tape to cover the top and I was dead on. I hope this helps someone who is struggling to true up one of your saws. I do LOVE the video!!!

      Outer Banks Productions Haber This is one of the best constructive criticism comments I’ve ever received on my channel.. I have been wanting some woodpeckers squares but I will go get a square like you talked about and see the difference.. Thank you and I appreciate you taking the time to watch my video and leave this awesome comment. 👍👍👊

      @@JakeThompson So happy to be of service! Thanks for the complement. The technical term for the plastic squares I'm talking about is an engineering square. I ran into a video today from the Canadian youtube guy and he echo's what I was saying. I sent this link up to the perfect spot in the video. Hope everyone watches and tries this. 90 degrees is awesome but 89.9 degrees can suck, depending on your project. Enjoy! ruclips.net/video/TOve6oVPKVw/видео.html

    The kickback occurred because you didn't use the plunge stop. If you pause at 6:55, that black knob is the plunge stop. You untwist it off the saw, twist onto the track, and set the saw in front of the plunge stop. While you have the saw butted up against the plunge stop, it is now safe to plunge since theres no way to move backwards during the plunging step. Trust me I know, I had a the same experience as you did.

    You have a great track saw!
    Keeping the vacuum hose and power cord out of the way will be one of your biggest challenges. I suggest making a mock cut full length in order to work out you hose/cord management before you make the actual cut. You'll be surprised how often you run out of hose before you run out of cut.

    That little black thing next to the rear track adjustment wheel on the saw at 6:44 is the kickback stop. Remove the kickback stop from its storage place on the saw and attach it to the rail behind the saw at the starting point of the cut.

    Something to think about the next time you use the saw. Although I'm sure you've used it a ton more since. That black piece attached to the back of the saw is meant to come off and mount on the track. It has a lip that the back of your saw fits under to prevent kick back when you're plunging.

  • @peterm85
    @peterm85 4 года назад +1

    Really liked that you also showed the kickback part. I'm looking to buy this one soon too and it will be my first decent track saw. Good review. I think I saw a video where the splinter guard (the green one on the side of the saw) had to be cut too (like you did with the track). Did you have to do that too?

    • @JakeThompson
      @JakeThompson  3 года назад +1

      The price difference between the two isn’t that much.. if I’m going to be doing slabs, I wanted the extra cut depth the 75 provides.. if I was going to be doing plywood or thinner materials. I would definitely get the 55

    Jake, best investment as far as Festool goes. Absolutely love mine use it almost every day. Really give it a work out when preparing rough stock. Using the melamine blade first edge looks like it came straight from the jointer, in less than two minutes. Some of Festool tools I’m not as impressed with but the Festool track saws earn money back fast.
