    To be honest wood stocks makes bolt action rifles look cooler in my opinion. I have a savage axis in 308 in a hardwood stock. I replaced the plastic trigger guard for a metal one. Seeing the ruger American rifle in a wooden stock is awsome.

      There is a certain je ne sais quoi about metal and wood that appeals deeply to my tastes as well. Even though I am not in a ban state, I find myself wanting a FightLite SCR or Foxtrot Mike Ranch Rifle. Even those PPSH-looking Ruger PCCs with aftermarket wood stocks are seriously tempting despite the outrageous prices!

    I’ve used Boyd’s for a while and I still really like there stocks , I buy my own pillar kits and metal parts elsewhere when I need them . I also go way above and beyond and glass bed all of my rifles . It takes time but it’s a labor of love at this point

    birch stocks are used on the mosin-nagants strong material

      Indeed. The Finns used it in their Mosins, and there were some Garands with birch stocks too, and they are among the most beautiful surplus rifle stocks I've ever seen!

    A Savage Axis. $80 stock, trigger replacement minimum $100 add that money to the price of the Gun there's a lot of other nicer rifles out there you can buy and not have to do anything to

    • @DrThunder88
      @DrThunder88  Год назад

      Trigger job only costs about $10. Or $15 if you don't already have JB Weld around the house.
      Still, you're right insomuch as the days of getting a new Axis for $200-250 are over. These stocks seem to have been a limited run themselves, and the remaining stocks Boyds makes for the Axis have increased in price while the quality has dropped. Thankfully Rifle Basix prices haven't spiked, so people not interested in doing their own trigger work can get an excellent trigger for about $90.

    Obviously an older video to comment on, but these are definitely the factory stocks used on the Axis Hardwood models. I have gotten several NIB and they literally have the Boyds logo on the recoil pad.

    EEEEWWW VERY NICE. it makes it look like my first savage 06, which was a Lefty. I wouldn't mind getting one of those for my recently acquired Savage Axis 6.5 Creedmore.

      If you ever shot a thumbhole stock, you wouldn't consider the traditional stock. Boyds makes great thumbhole stocks with beautiful color selections in laminations that hold up better in all weather conditions. Check them all out. I have a couple and am looking to upgrade a number of other rifles in the future to various thumbhole models.

    Nice stock. It's refreshing to see a wooden stock. It lends itself to bedding and free floating. Wood had a natural feel that appeals to traditional hunters. Kinda tired of the tactical craze. Old school . Nice!

      I haven't done any bedding or pit any pillars on these particular stocks. The accuracy with the Savage was about the same as the factory stock: about an inch at 100 yards. The Ruger (in 450 Bushmaster) was a little wider, around two inches, but I also didn't widen the barrel channel to free float it.

      Quite true. I think there may be one left hand, long action Ruger American stock still in the Rapid Fire Closeouts, but it is by no means clear. Not to mention that combination would need a very specific buyer!

      I recently purchased a camo laminate with the stock configured classic... not only does it look beautiful... a deer theme was available for the classic.
      Love it!
      I ordered the metal trigger guard as well

    Thank you for your honest review of Boyd's.
    I had two bad experiences with them. I will continue to steer people clear of them until they rectify mine and others who have been left wanting what anyone would expect from them.
    No clarity, despite a plathora of specifications. Rude and negligent customer service. Sighs and snarky self assuming comments is what you can expect.
    Buy Bell and Carlson or anyone else who's gotten their reputation built on a solid foundation. You're the customer, not Boyd's.
    I will continue to steer people clear of them until they come correct with me.

      @@skeet330 Boyds gives a person a value stock. For the most part they are drop in and may need a little fitting. I personally have two thumbhole stocks that were drop ins with zero work. I will purchase more in the future. It is up to the customer to measure and choose the right stock. If you do order the wrong thing it is on you, but they will let you return it so long as you have not damaged or altered it for a restocking fee. You cannot change your order once it has got to the floor unless you pay a restocking fee.

    Can you order a wooden stock with checkering from Boyd’s? I have an old savage 110 and am looking at aftermarket stocks rather than refinishing the one it is in now

    • @DrThunder88
      @DrThunder88  4 года назад

      I don't think they do actual checkering as one of their standard upgrades, though they do offer several laser-etched grip patterns. You might be able to contact them directly to arrange for yours to be checkered, though Boyds' customer service is not--or at least has not been--known for being good. It is possible to have the stock checkered by a third party vendor, just keep in mind Boyds will charge you extra to not spray a finish on your stock.

    Thanks for your video, do you know if this stock will fit to any Savage Axis? Because at their website it says SA what means "short action" I assume and my Axis is chambered in 25-06... (this stock is my only option because it´s less than 100$ and Boyds will not ship to Europe otherwise)

    • @garrytalley8009
      @garrytalley8009 Год назад

      25-06 is long action. SA is short action. Of course, you wrote your question 4 years ago and most likely have moved on.

  • @garrytalley8009
    @garrytalley8009 6 лет назад

    Fair assessment, but you really expect too much stock for the money Boyd's sell for. There are some companies that went under because they did not make the changes Boyd's has made to stay in business and still offer a good product for the money. BTW factory Ruger Birch Stocks that are also stained to a more solid color look. Example Birch Stocks on 10-22's I know, I had one. Plain wood stocks are not all that good and the laminates are worth the extra money. They are less apt to warp and are better for fowl weather. Not to mention they are a lot prettier when they alternate the wood colors like Boyd's does.

    Hi, where do you buy your trigger guards?

    • @DrThunder88
      @DrThunder88  6 лет назад

      I usually bought them from Boyds when I bought the stocks. The item numbers are 10061 for black steel and 100662 for stainless. Keep in mind if you aren't also buying a stock, Boyds' shipping costs are outrageous. They will charge you as much to ship it as they would if you bought a rifle stock! I have been complaining about that for years, but Boyds doesn't seem to care.
      The trigger guards are also available from big suppliers like Midway and Brownells as well as Savage itself (when they're actually selling parts). The Savage part number for the black guard is 105417 and the stainless guard is 105928.
