Wherein DrThunder88 ruins forever the bolt handle of his $300 rifle and exposes for all the world to see that he is, in fact, a mall ninja.
Items used in this project:
Smooth-On Dragon Skin silicone rubber
TAP Plastics Super-Hard Epoxy
TAP Plastics Premium Opaque Pigment
Brownells fiberglass floc
10-32 button head machine screw 3/4" long
Don't get me wrong, I love my savage axis .308. But, I hate having to worry about my bolt handle scraping my scope.
You can see the bulge of the factory bolt handle knob sticking through the epoxy in this particular casting. That's the point of the bolt handle that gets closest to the scope bell! A wider knob placed closer to the bolt itself could get closer to the scope, but careful design (the kind I don't do) could prevent the epoxy knob from being any more obtrusive than the factory one. Thanks for watching!
That actually looks pretty nice man.and you won't have to pay the obnoxious price they want for their "oversized" knobs. ($60-$80)
EGW 20MOA. I don't really shoot long enough ranges to completely justify the 20MOA, but I couldn't find the flat version anywhere when I was looking.
nice,
but I don't know if i'm brave enough to drill a hole in my bolt.
I do have a question for you though, can your bolt wiggle side to side when it is open??
also could you measure how much if any it moves?
my bolt seems really loose.
I would really appreciate it if you ( or someone else) told me.
Christian
I know this is an old video, but, you could counter sink a hole in the fiberglass 1/4" and use a socket head cap screw recessed within the handle....maybe make it deeper and use a fitted rubber plug to seal it. ;-)
Not a bad idea! I revisited this project in a later video or two and came up with a better solution. Still, it's usually good to have more than one way to address a problem. Thanks!
Do you by chance work on other peoples rifles? I have a .223 Axis 2 i would love to get a knob for.
Dremel, cut off wheels, 5/16 die and a tactical bolt knob on ebay- total= $25. last forever and looks 100% better than fiberglass epoxy.
+Long range Killa Totally! That's why there's the annotation leading to the video where I do that with hand tools. ruclips.net/video/fczCGdZG1iM/видео.html
+DrThunder88 ahhhh I see, I watched your video, I had the same casting void in the finished shank on my axis. I put first Savage together this time last year, not looking back!! Blueprinted the action, Shilen select match barrel, pillar bedded boyds thumbhole (full float) and a Nightforce Nxs 8-32. shoots 1/4 moa with 107gr Sierra matchkings. I sold all my Remington bolt actions and goin all savage cause I can save about 800 bucks per build!
+Long range Killa Very nice! I haven't crossed the action modification threshold yet, but the TTT service from Sharpshooter Supply might be something I'll have to consider in future builds. Thanks for watching!
I just ground the knob into a dowel shape and jb welded an aluminum knob on. works great.
Why not epoxy on an eight ball LOL
Very cool idea! what scope mount are you, using?
Thanks! It's an EGW 20 MOA rail. I've since upgraded the bolt handle to use a standard 5/16 threaded bolt knob. I did it all with hand tools, and posted the video to my channel. I think threading is the way to go!
thanks,
I estimated my bolt to move about 1/4 inch.
at least now I know it's normal.
What a "HACK JOB" but, If you like it, I love it.
what rail is that you have installed?
The Savage Axis is fast becoming the accurizing tinkerers' bolt-action of choice.
(Now if some companies could start putting out after-market stocks to replace that wibbly-wobbily stock stock...)
They do look up boyds custom laminated stocks
I won't ever get that 7 minutes and 6 seconds back.😞
Sorry about the delay. I estimate the wiggle is less than 1/4 inch (6mm) when the bolt is fully retracted. This isn't from any sort of measurement, but I was sort of eyeballing the position of the rear of the firing pin in relation to the mold line in comb of the stock. I hope this helps!
Nice gun man
First like and first comment. But the axis is a amazing rifle i have mine in 30-06
my savage axis 30\06 handle just clears scope
Depending on the shape of the knob you design, it might not be an issue. You can see the top of the factory bolt knob on the knob in this video.
I should also mention that I made another video about threading an Axis bolt handle for a knob using only hand tools, which, for some reason, doesn't show up in the recommended videos column. That could be another option if the knob you select is one of those long cone or teardrop shapes. Anyway, the threading video is uploaded to my channel even if it doesn't show up on this page.
just got the same gun, thats the only thing i dont like about it.
can you make me one please
See Glade Armory.
"Glades". I've seen them!
This RUclips comment thing is killing me
It is pretty annoying.
Looks like shit but its your rifle not mine. I also have a savage axis in 308
