  • Clean the floor beneath your jaw, because this video is so astonishing that it will put the one on the other!
Well, it's not that astonishing, but it could be helpful if you're looking to change up your Savage Axis' bolt handle. In this project I cut down and thread a bolt handle using nothing more than a few hand tools.
    Tools:
    High-tension 12" hacksaw
    Nicholson 14" Magicut flat file
    12" second cut flat file
    6" smooth cut file
5" multipurpose vise with wood jaw protectors
    5/16"-24 1" round die
    1" die stock
    4" calipers
    Carbide scribe
    Magic marker
    Supplies:
    5/16"-24 threaded oval knob (McMaser-Carr item 6050K15)
Savage Axis bolt handle (Savage Arms item 107922)

thank you for the how to. i was able to thread the bolt on my Remington 700 watching your video. i ain't gonna lie, i was nerves the entire time until the threading was over with. i got a sense of satisfaction i was able to do it my self and not have to pay a gunsmith $60 to do something that easy. like and subbed.

whitetail warrior I'm glad to know you were able to do it! A 700 bolt raises the stakes somewhat, so your jangled nerves were well justified.

This was one of your better videos. I do like this method better than the over-molding one. You have more versatility in being able to change the design of the knob with just screw off screw on.

Used your method here to modify my Savage 111 Trophy Hunter chambered in .30-06. Thanks for the tip!

It's funny to think in the dinosaur days before the proliferation of power tools, everything was done with hand tools! Thanks!

You did it pretty much exactly how I would, unless I could get a minute with my boss's belt sander.
