thats great, i grew up in FL with Caribbean food, its all so good, and a lot of it is easy to make vegan. beacause of the spice you won't miss the meat at all. one of my staples even before i went vegan was black beans with rice, platanos maduros (sweet ripe plantains) and a salad. its aleady vegan for you.

Totally. saute onion and bellpeppers diced up real small. throw the smart ground crumbles, with some adobo, some soffrito, and sazon. Then throw in the olives put it all together and fry.

I stoped eating meet about 6 months ago and ive been graving alcapurias i need to try this resepie
Oh those look so goood! Maybe if you spray non stick cooking spray on them before you bake them then that will give them the golden brown color you are looking for.
Also if you precook the massa and let it cool before stuffing the alcapuria then that will cut down the baking time so that it will be less dry.
I tried spraying them and they still turned out blahh lol...and if you precook the masa you would end up with a completely different dish called pasteles or even another dish called boyitos..there are so many things that could be done with this masa and frying it is what make that masa alcapurrias so i just think that's why baking doesn't work

Yes. They were great. I used the vegan ground instead, and made them cocktail sized for a potlock at work. 👍👍👍 10/10 would make again. *(when I get a proper food processor cause, girl, hand-grating yautía in 2018 ain't good 😂)

I knew based on your accent that you were either Puerto Rican or Dominican. I'm Mexican but I definitely heard of this dish from my Dominican friends since all they talk about is food from their country (or the Caribbean)

I live in LA and I’m able to find the larger green platano but for the bunch of green bananas the only thing i can find are the regular bananas but they are super green still before turning yellow. Are those the same ones you are using in this video?

Say Rose, where do you get annato seeds or achiote? I was going to get some sazon as many of your recipes include it, but then there were 3 kinds so I didn't know which kind to get. is it at a regular grocery store in the spice section or just where. Thanks. Keep up the good work.

I have a homemade recipe below the video and you can find the annato at big supermarkets in the spices section and the sazon too..watch out for the Tri Calcium in the ingredients which apparently isn't vegan ...lol most brands have it and I have been schooled of that by the vegan police here lol which is why now I make my own

Is this recipe on the blog yet I don’t see it when I looked I want to try it but make it the traditional way. I always wanted to try to make it but didn’t know where to start. Also do you put them in the fridge to firm them a bit more before frying I was thinking about that it might make it easier to get off the wax paper
Hi Melinda! This recipe is not written yet..I've had a lot on my plate these last few day lol no pun intended! You can put them in the fridge to firm up more but I usually just slip the parchment paper right into the oil and the alcapurria glides right off..mami forms them by hand lol but Ive never been able to do that without breaking them

Can i fry in olive oil?
Olive oil is not for frying...it burns on high heat and smokes up the place😂 ur smoke alarm would be going nuts and it would make the food taste weird too

Betsy Ramos I’m not in LA but most Latin grocery stores have it. And I always like to check when my normal grocery store is getting new bananas because sometimes they keep the green ones in a box underneath the fruit stand thing or they have all the green bananas out to get ripe 🤷🏽♀️

If you can find it omit it. You can just add a little more green plantains. Then add a little bit of vegan milk.The green cooking banana is just to make it smooth. You could even just make it with yuca/cassava. Fry a little bit of the batter / masa by itself. This way you can play with the texture and the seasoning batter / masa. I find her batter too soft. But that's might be the way she likes it.. I make mines a little firmer. You can look at different recipes that are non vegan. Using her ideas and different methods that other people use. Overall a pretty good recipe.

The green banana isn't the unripened yellow ones. It's a different banana..
The masa needs the annatto seed oil. In it. The veggie meats has no flavor . TVP needs to be prepared with a sofrito , adobo etc
