There were a lot of things I didn't like about DS2, but something I really liked was how it felt like a part of a much larger world by constantly describing all these different, distant cultures that you never got to see. In that aspect, at least, it really felt like a we were seeing just a small part of a great big world. And I think that plays into the timelines of Dark Souls. In the original Dark Souls, few distant lands were described, because, even during the full age of fire, civilization was still young, and men and other beings hadn't yet had a chance to spread to other lands. In Dark Souls 2, things have been in full swing for a while, and many civilizations have sprung up and developed distinct cultures and belief systems and interactions with one another. The undead curse is a distant fear for that world, something horrible and terrifying that happened far away and one hoped would never reach their homeland, but, almost always, inevitably arrived. In Dark Souls 3, the world is collapsing back in on itself, so many cultures have already perished. The undead curse is the only thing keeping most of the inhabitants alive. It's not that they survived, it's that they failed to die with everyone else.
Infsct I adore so many of the different and stylized invaders and npc phantoms as well as all of this unusual race's! It felt humane something beautiful and viewed in this land the truest economic and more almost grounded troubles theu faced alongside other rising ones. All collapsing together to leaving only derelict.
@@brightestlight9462 That was a theory at one point, but there's no real evidence supporting it, and there are enough vague references to DS2 locations and persons in the past tense that DS3 almost certainly takes place after DS2. In the Dreg Heap, the lands seem to be arranged from youngest on top to oldest at the bottom (except for the Kiln of the First Flame, which sucked everything else towards it and ended up being one of the highest points as a result). DS3's Lothric is towards the top, then DS2's Earthen Peak is in the middle, then DS1's Firelink Shrine is at the bottom. The Ringed City is even further below to indicate that it's one of the oldest locations in the world.
@@Thesaurus_Rex thanks for that! so what's the canonical reason for ds3 having so many more direct links to ds1? ds2 doesn't really talk at all about gwyn or any of the gods or locations in ds1, whereas they are integral to ds3--though obviously not as much so as in ds1
@@brightestlight9462 I believe because Drangleic was, itself, somewhat further from Lordran than Lothric is, both geographically and philosophically. Lothric seems to have been somewhat obsessed with the linking of the fire, and there's a possibility that the royalty of Lothric were, themselves, descended from the gods of Anor Londo. Meanwhile, Drangleic seemed opposed to the linking of the fire, to some extent, given that Aldia seemed to view it as "the first sin". And, as I said in my original post, DS2 took place during a time when, while the curse of the undead was very much widespread, the world was perhaps at its zenith, when the races of men had spread far across the world, so the cultural influence of Anor Londo's gods (if any still existed at all) wasn't felt by many.
Yeah that was... Confusing I watched a video recently (today actually) that said that the original idea for DS2 was that of a massive open world with all the different regions that we see. But the team changed director mid development and they had to scramble all together. Kinda like a real life Lothric. DS2 is still my favourite though
I mean I think in ds2 it's that they're making a long journey shorter to not affect gameplay as much. It could be that the lift takes us to the top of the tower and then from there there is a path to the iron keep that's too long to be put in gameplay. Or it could be rushed design, who knows.
For me, Velka is by far the most interesting of the gods in Dark Souls. Her unique domain, her unique relationship to said domain (being equally willing to redeem or to punish), her status as a "rouge" diety, the possibility of her being Priscilla's mother, the suggestions of a connection to Gwyndolin, and her potential connection to sorcery (being described as a "witch" & her talisman using intelligence instead of faith). She's connected to so much that in terms of overall importance to the lore, I'd argue she rivals Gywn.
I think it would be fun if for one video, Vaati becomes an author and tells their own story set in the dark souls universe the way they tell lore. Like nothing will contradict anything in the games. Vaati is just going off and paint a picture of their own.

Probably the *best* version of 'hit the bell for notifications' I've ever seen. Also I could easily fall asleep to these. Your voice is just delightful. Also also! It's just gobsmacking how detailed the lore in these games is. Not just that, but it's just so fascinating to see how something as simple as localization of a non-English title can impact your analysis. Bravo, VV!
I'm new to Dark Souls, recently started really getting into DS3, I never knew there were Varangians in Dark Souls that's super cool. In real life Varangians were Viking, Rus, and Anglo-Saxon mercenaries who worked for the Byzantine Empire and basically did all the elite soldier stuff like protecting the emperor and doing the special forces type of stuff on the battlefield at the time. This was because the Emperors trusted Norse honor over the loyalty of their own people
Hey ThePruld made me follow your content and it's actually pretty good, you are a Librarian of the great Archives that contains all the knowledge of the world of dark souls, bravo!!!
That just sounds like a joke to me.He gives a very basic and simple lore information to be honest.Aegon of Astora does a *LOT* more in-depth lore digging.Even if he doesn't make the most logical inferences he literally digs every lore evidence in the game and discusses that with other people.
Daniel Antony well thank you for sharing that with me, but i just prefer the "mood" of Vaaty videos, anyway even if i already watched some of Aegon content i will dig a little deeper, so that maybe i will change my mind 😉
These videos are always so good. No matter the theme. Vaati's voice is like velvet sunk in honey, the music is pretty sweet and the visuals are so well edited.

To be fair I have to give you massive credit , considering this game series is pretty much dead you’ve managed to build a lore and story to these games that is not only fascinating to watch/listen to , but manage to keep coming up with fascinating insights that always make me rethink the games even though I don’t play them any more. Kudos Vaati , I hope From continues the Soulsbourne series , if only so I can here your wonderful take on the lore....
I will assume you are joking because DS2 was made before Bloodborne. Yes, I am just telling the obvious but I have seen way to much ignorants on the internet that has made such mistakes.
Joel Reyes So it's hard for you to remember that Faraam is the god of War that the Lion knights worshiped,The Firstborn is the god of war and that the firstborn's first knight was Lion Knight Ornstein? Do you have intellegence problems,my man? It's the most basic lore twist. How can you not get it?
Even though you have over 1M subscribers now I still think you're so under rated. Looking forward to any video you put out next, it's always 100% quality
Ginsho My kink is to become as grossly incandescent as Solaire while getting smacked around by Wolnir. Basically, I get turned on in the dark not knowing when the enormous existential dread that is my life will finally grab me and drag my corpse into the abyss where others have surely died...
4:08 Or, since they had many of their own abyss watchers who were felled in those regions, their blood was what bound them together? The blood is a vessel for the soul, after all; and they could very well be bound by Wolfblood. So while the Abyss Watchers ultimately died somewhere else, causality & the bonds between the remnant souls in their blood pulled the world together somehow, like a messed up patchwork of corpses

Wesley Farber Its a great game, but if you want lore videos, check out the series by Cyberphile. He wrote The Drowned Tome (which you can find in pdf on reddit) and is the community's lore master.
What if everything in dark souls is a cycle when we head into the new painting we live with whatever was painted then we die and whatever identity grabs our soul. Begins Slaying whatever was painted and starts the beginning of the end. In our dark souls universe it would be the gods that took the soul of the one who helped the previous painter. This would mean the dragons were painted and This would give the dragons a past and would explain why there world without the gods was so perfect. Also perhaps in the painting before the the dark souls one dragons were perfect creatures in the eyes of the painter.
WannaBeHero then people other than hollows should have been here and remembered the existence of such thing. Then humanity should have been there even before fire. Rott should have also existed and the actual cycle of the flame wouldn’t be a thing. It would also say that anything in DS2 is not real and that the painting in ds1 was not made at first as a prison. Sorry, your theory is interesting but there’s no way that it can work. Tell me if I am wrong but it also looks like you never played DS2 or haven’t looked at it’s lore because it explains a lot about the cycle itself and how it was even brought in the first place. That it was almost like some kind of paradox made by Gwyn because he couldn’t accept the end of his empire. That being hollow is the natural order and that the cycle is an anomaly. Every thing need to end someday but people are scared of it so they go against it’s nature and create more misery because of it. There’s is also more to this but I will leave it to you to discover it.
Great video. Kind of surprised you didn't note the duality of Wolnir and Yohrm. Both Kingdoms covered by places that led to their own Kingdoms downfall. It also lends a bit of extra credence to your statement about lothric conquering the lands that converged. Cannot wait to have the feels again with prepare to cry. It feels like there are still a thousand stories to tell, can't wait to hear them all.
Not XTREVER DS2, especially scholar, is underrated anyway. They are all good games, don't get me wrong, but DS2 gets way too much hate. In my book it's >DS3
Ds 3 is still way more interesting. Ds 2's world felt like it has no inspired style to it or atleast it lost it's style. Miyazaki made Dark Souls to feel like Berserk. Ds 2 feels like your average fantasy. Ds 1=Ds 3>Ds 2.
DS3 was literally copy and fucking paste from DS1 not really all that inspired honestly DS3 had the most boring areas other than DLC, i wanted to explore more in DS1 and 2 but DS3 EVERYTHING LOOKS THE FUCKING SAME, with the exception of irythyll which i got bloodborne vibes from it

Once more an absolutely incredible video! Just when I think there's nothing more to say about the lore and you hit me with this gem, amazing stuff dude!
I'm surprised we've never seen any King's Field videos from you.
Mirrah armor set was totally my fav for my first ds3 playthrough, so it was really cool seeing a little bit more info for them in this video. awesome stuff as usual vaati!
1:54 yoshikage nito
This was because the Emperors trusted Norse honor over the loyalty of their own people
I think this is the only channel I really look forward to watch. Congrats on the high quality of the videos and the high quality of your voice ♥
Dammit Vaati, just start making audiobooks. My ears demand it!
Hey Vaati just wanted to say I love your channel. Seriously can't believe how much lore there is to delve into.
Hey ThePruld made me follow your content and it's actually pretty good, you are a Librarian of the great Archives that contains all the knowledge of the world of dark souls, bravo!!!
wowee thanks pruld!
You can call him, Lorbrarian.
elfaia that's really nice bro
"If you already know everything, consider opening a RUclips channel on Dark Souls lore"
Damn, Vaati :):):)
Congrats on Namco reaching out to you. You are awesome and deserve some recognition. Keep the videos coming!
9:42 DUDE YOU KILLED THE NON HOSTILE TORCH HOLLOW WHAT THE HECK
Should be ashamed for harming a poor torchbro
You put so much effort in these videos, thats why i love what you do, i deeply thank you to increase my insight of the soulsborne series and after all i respect you, and admire you, beacause you tell the truth when you take footage fron other videos and because how your voice perfect for story telling catches me when youre talking about lore, my deepiest thanks to you for enhancing my curiosity of this universe that captures our minds and lets us explore other realms of imagination that some years before i couldnt even imagine.
Thank you
*Blow's off dust*
Oh he's uploaded again
a very good story and video as always vaati!
happy to see new content and hear the story of everything, you are the one who made me interested in doing more than kill bosses in the souls games and since i heard you explain it all it have been a more emotional challenge to fight through the games. outstanding work!
GRANT US LOOOORE
great editing and music. I appreciate your content vaati, keep it up. hope you can make more once the remaster comes out, even if it's something already covered... I bet we'll all find something new even now.
*_TARKUS! TARKUS! TARKUS!_*
I don't know what it is, but your videos intrigue me and make me think more than any other RUclipsr. I'm eternally thankful for stumbling across such a great content creator.
Dark souls is life
To be fair I have to give you massive credit , considering this game series is pretty much dead you’ve managed to build a lore and story to these games that is not only fascinating to watch/listen to , but manage to keep coming up with fascinating insights that always make me rethink the games even though I don’t play them any more. Kudos Vaati , I hope From continues the Soulsbourne series , if only so I can here your wonderful take on the lore....
hmm i always thought the age of the deep sea that Eldritch envisioned was a clear reference to bloodborne..
EySoyCoco A bottomless curse, a bottomless sea. Accepting of all that there is, and can be.
Gross
I will assume you are joking because DS2 was made before Bloodborne. Yes, I am just telling the obvious but I have seen way to much ignorants on the internet that has made such mistakes.
EySoyCoco It’s so clearly a reference. Deep sea, seen in a dream, Aldrich sounds just like Eldrich.
"Who wants a 30 second video" if only he knew shorts were a couple years away from dropping
i want that 30 second video!
all DS lore is good lore, no matter how short
So well filmed! This was a refreshing and insightful 14 mins. Your work is exquisite.
More lore is always a good time
Not really lore to be honest.More like a basic lore guide with average and simple skills of lore digging.
Daniel Antony man he's saving us the time it would take plus connecting them which basic item descriptions dont entirely do
Joel Reyes So it's hard for you to remember that Faraam is the god of War that the Lion knights worshiped,The Firstborn is the god of war and that the firstborn's first knight was Lion Knight Ornstein? Do you have intellegence problems,my man? It's the most basic lore twist. How can you not get it?
Man I get that you were trying to be condescending but woofk I think you just hit yourself a bad one there bud
Yeah you sounded like a real dick there Dan
I missed your content so much! Keep trying to work on these projects, we're all happy to watch even 30 seconds of a video.
Welcome Back! :D
Man, I like your channel. These are lore videos I can enjoy! Thank you from Finland.
HE UPLOADED.
Even though you have over 1M subscribers now I still think you're so under rated. Looking forward to any video you put out next, it's always 100% quality
Oh snap, Vaati just made another vid. Lemme pause my research to peep this!!!
by research you mean google right?
nomercy8989 By research, I actually do mean mean my research project for grad school...
TheQuiescentGamer what's your kink, no point in lying
Ginsho My kink is to become as grossly incandescent as Solaire while getting smacked around by Wolnir. Basically, I get turned on in the dark not knowing when the enormous existential dread that is my life will finally grab me and drag my corpse into the abyss where others have surely died...
TheQuiescentGamer one can only dream though.
1:09 in the "The Unmade Soulsborne Videos of 2017" Video you talked about Lorians war against the Demons and that actually was the one I was the most interested in and now its the only one missing feelsbadman.
1:24 Elden Ring’s lore revealed three and a half years early
I've missed you Sir Vaati of House Vidya. Great vid, can't wait for the next.
Omg 'Sir Vaati of House Vidya" is SOOO GOLDEN! Give this man more likes!
I don’t think you’ve ever put out a vid that hasn’t blown my mind. Don’t ever stop doing what you’re doing.
I just watched your Dark Souls Remastered story trailer 😁 💓
Just stumbling on your channel. I've now watch around 4 hours work of videos. You my friend have a new sub and bell ringer
Nito is the coolest of them al. I would like to see him battle manus :>
I want a dlc focused on the war against the dragons
I think the lands are converging because it makes the unkindled one's quest easier. Because if we had to travel great distances to get to each lord, the fire might never have been rekindled.
btw I saw someone named Gavel The Pebble when I was doing some co op the other day and I died from laughter, just thought id share that with you guys
That’s pretty hilarious. I imagine the Havel gloves and the ringed city loincloth with a mail breaker or something
Lol haven't seen a video of tbis channel for like a year.. glad the remaster has rekindled the channel cause the lore videos where always nice.
Notification squad assemble
I'm not feeling so good...
Sorry I'm late Fortnite and such
I had a carrier pigeon deliver me a notification, get on my level.
Really enjoy your souls lore videos, watched them countless times they're great keep it up VaatiVidya
Vaati, any chance you could do some Salt & Sanctuary lore ? Its fascinating stuff, full of small details.
KaiserAfini I've been hoping for a video like that for months. Hope it happens.
I think he only does Soulslike games produced by FromSoft. If he did Salt and Sanctuary, he'd have to do other Soulslike games, such as Nioh and Hollow Knight.
LordFhalkyn i would not be sorry if he did 😊
Oh man, I just started playing Salt and Sanctuary again last week (never beat it before), and I was thinking how much I'd love to see Vaati do some videos on it.
Wesley Farber Its a great game, but if you want lore videos, check out the series by Cyberphile. He wrote The Drowned Tome (which you can find in pdf on reddit) and is the community's lore master.
I’m actually really excited for your Carthus video. I’ve always wanted to know more about it
What if everything in dark souls is a cycle when we head into the new painting we live with whatever was painted then we die and whatever identity grabs our soul.
So glad to see a new lore video! :) love you're channel man keep up the good work!
Praise the Vaati
Great video. Kind of surprised you didn't note the duality of Wolnir and Yohrm. Both Kingdoms covered by places that led to their own Kingdoms downfall. It also lends a bit of extra credence to your statement about lothric conquering the lands that converged. Cannot wait to have the feels again with prepare to cry. It feels like there are still a thousand stories to tell, can't wait to hear them all.
did i hear prepare to cry ds 1 remaster??? hell yea!
Vaati you have the smoothest most relaxing voice. I could listen to you for days on end.
We have returned!!!
OMG , I miss you very much
The music in this made everything 100 times better. Nicely done!
*Upload hype!*
Simte \[T]/
Praise that sun boii
Simte VAAATI
Simte COME HERE AND TALK WITH ME. YOU'VE MADE A MISTAKE MAKING A BLOODBORNE THEORY
Simte COME ON MAN
You have no change since all of your first videos and i liked so much!
In my opinion dark souls 2 probably has the best lore on things that are not in the game.
>Ds 2's world felt like it has no inspired style
literally DS3
hollllllke123 ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THAT!?
Spoiler alert: He did. He said it so many times that berserk inspired him to make DS
DS3 was literally copy and fucking paste from DS1 not really all that inspired honestly DS3 had the most boring areas other than DLC, i wanted to explore more in DS1 and 2 but DS3 EVERYTHING LOOKS THE FUCKING SAME, with the exception of irythyll which i got bloodborne vibes from it
Love you’re videos so much I tend to bing watch them wayyyy to late at night
yet another beautiful video by one of the best youtubers out there. love ya man
Well, when I started to watch there was only 400 views...
And now it's over 9000
And that's because of the notification bell ! You should really click it guys !
Anyways, thank you again VaatiVidya for this video. All these video about the lore of Dark souls are very pleasant to watch or to listen. It feels nice to listen to you telling us stories, your voice is sweet ! And it helps with understanding a lot of things in these games that can be very confusing sometimes.
Sorry for my poor english, and I wish you to have a nice day ♥
As always, great video with a lot to think about. Can't wait for that Wolnir and Carthus lore vid !
Hey anyone remember the name Edward Emberpants... Hmmm ?
Well I know I do.
Do you Vatii ?
Or did you forget him in Yharnam ?!?
Edwad*
Ceaselessly inspiring me with your lore, theories and tone of voice I'm a big fan your doing amazing videos don't stop until you've reached the end of your quest!!
Ahhh the dream begins tomorrow:)
This video is old but than you for the hard work cause I’ve put hours into these games and you still amaze me with things I’ve missed once again thank you
