I have been diagnosed with stage 3 kidney failure. I’m convinced that a low carb diet will be the way to lower my blood pressure to safe levels for my kidneys. Problem is, my nephrologist and everyone around me claim I have to avoid protein for the sake of my kidneys. I don’t think they understand how powerful a carb addiction can be. So far I’ve been secretly eating a fat rich carnivore diet for three days and for the first time In months my blood pressure has reached safe levels. Am I messing up here?

Look up Dr. Jason Fung. He is a nephrologist who recommends low carbohydrate diets and fasting. He started his program years ago, because most of his patients had T2 diabetes, which was destroying their kidneys.

At stage 3 you don't have to worry about protien. Restricting certain nutrients only becomes necessary in late stage 4 or stage 5, if your GFR drops below 15%. Stick with low carb and avoid processed foods.

Saw a new Endocrinologist yesterday. She told me eating meat is causing me inflammation and is very unhealthy for me. Said it's backed up by science. Also tried to push a high vegetable diet and plant protein. Wouldn't listen to me when I said I've lost 30 lbs, returning to my highschool weight, sleeping better, and having no more joint pain. I said, that's where we disagree. Seed oils, carbs and sugar caused my problems and she needs to catch up on her information. I fired her. I'll get an inflammatory marker test, but not from her. The struggle for me is locating a keto/carnivore friendly Dr.

Even spices leave me inflamed after a day or two. And thank you for calling out pharmacists. While it's hard to buck the training, I'd love to see more of my colleagues in the low-carb space.

Sorry to hear about your experience. Jardiance, Invokana, and other SGLT2 inhibitors can have a nasty adverse effect of DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis), AND Fournier's Gangrene (look it up---not pretty!). I had never seen DKA using nutritional ketosis until these medications came out! They can cause DKA even when you are eating carbs! Rest assured that keto/carnivore does the same thing (and more!) as these medications.-Dr W

Thanks so much for having Dr Tony Hampton on to explain this. He is so clear and easy to understand. Thanks for explaining the ONE exception to causing problems instead of healthy nutritional ketosis - by taking medications like Jardiance which can cause euglycemic diabetic keto acidosis - using the drugs that are SGLT2 (sodium-glucose co-transporter 2) inhibitors for diabetes, kidney or heart problems. Will be asking friends with these diseases if taking any of those before I recommend Carnivore or Keto.
I am 78 and have been carnivore now 18 months and have had great results - no more arthritis pain, hand tremors, need for heart medications, etc.

Carnivore is how I recovered from a calorie restricted plant based (low fat, vegan) diet. I lost 30 lbs and almost lost all my skin, muscle, and mental health. The transition was difficult, no doubt- 'bout like a heroin addict going through withdrawals. Body pain, diarrhea, fatigue, not to mention oxalate dumping. After about 2 months, my skin wasn't tearing, my strength was returning, and my anxiety was gone. Now at 6 months and I am never going back. My lipid profile was disrupted on a plant based diet with Triglycerides- looking forward to labs at my annual in January.

Are you on carnivore? It may help to know that your digestion will slow down (or return to normal function depending on your viewpoint) on carnivore. Your body is able to use what you put in your mouth so there is no rush to waste it down the toilet. It should theoretically be possible to never have to go to the toilet but going more often than never is fine😊.
Compare this to a carb based meal that might hold fibre and other material that cannot be used. Your body will work so hard to get rid of it . The old way of thinking is that you have regular healthy bowl movements, but if the food you eat goes through your system in about 12 hours only to get flushed down the toilet, should it go into your mouth in the first place?

Over the last 8 week of tracking I've averaged just under 2,300 a day, with generally 3 days a week with zero.
I've lost just over 19lbs during that time.
But as I said that after a year of maintaining a 85+ weight loss over the 15 months before that (which was 15lbs below my original goal weight) so it isn't like when I started coming off a SAD like diet and was dropping weight fast. I started keto due to rising blood glucose levels and 2 months in I've had decent success. Initially I was using net carbs but it seems like more and more of the sugar substitutes are at least being partially digested and raising blood sugars so I moved to total carb counting. I'm considering carnivore to make my life simpler. I wish there were a "network" of sorts to find keto friendly doctors but here in the south I've yet to find a doctor that will even acknowledge food affects your health, they just want to prescribe meds and confirm to patients to eat anything they want because variety is good.

I justified that by drinking 6-8 diet sodas (20oz.) per day and still went to bed hungry. I now eat approximately 1lb. of beef with usually 4 eggs and a half pound of cheddar cheese once a day. I do splurge and drink 32- 64 ounces of BULLETPROOF COFFEE every day and usually up to 64 ounces of water per day. I no longer have cravings that I can’t ignore.

I'd say that regardless of your diet, if you have snack cravings, go ahead and snack. Just make sure you aren't eating any carbs. For many years, when my youngest daughter was in school, I'd make turkey and cheese sandwiches for her lunch. I'd eat turkey and cheese slices while making it. I don't eat breakfast or snack anymore, but still eat a lot of turkey and cheese slices during my eating window. Another good quick snack it no sugar jerky wrapped in cheese. C15 fatty acid is key in preventing insulin resistance and dairy products are most people's best source of C15.

Not even 2 weeks in, my anxiety was just gone. A little over 3 weeks in, the pain, numbing, muscle twitching and headaches were starting to fade. 3 months in i'd lost almost 35 lbs and i had no intention of losing weight when i first started but i just felt better and better. No training at all under this time and dang i gained so much muscle mass from all the protein while working in construction😂 never felt better will never look back. Highly recommend trying carnivore, ketovore or even a keto diet that still would have you reaching alot of the benefits of being in ketosis. Good luck to anyone that feels like trying. Have a goal to reach the 3 month mark on one of these diets so you can be sure you're able to feel the full spectrum of benefits in both body and spirit. Took me 3-4 weeks to get fully fat adapted but for some it can take 8-12 weeks at most.

This is really interesting because matter fact, I just had to request my money back. I knew to me a learning platform I took a keto coaching program. I started to go through and the lady teaching it. She’s teaching it from a keto perspective and she was saying that you can’t get all your nutrients from Animal product so long you gotta have vegetables. I like you know so I would I was kind of shocked and I said you know when she said you gotta be careful if she was actually teaching something like opposite of keto so so a program isn’t what I’m looking for they give me 90 days to get my cat money back so I can look for a better program if I have time, but it was just a half hour listening to it. It was all full of pretty bad information.

My carnivore diet is sooooo simple unless I want to have a "cooking day". Once a week, I pull out five meats of what ever - one bacon if I have a craving. I always have eggs - plain yogurt and cottage cheese available if I get really hungry. I do add blueberries to my yogurt and sometimes I will eat a kiwi. I try to buy enough meat for a month (it costs about $250 a month) and I pay another $50 for raw milk and other dairy.

I've been keto for 11 months. Only one time while sick did I break the 5 percent carbs for the day when I had matzo ball soup for a couple meals.
That said, weight way down, blood pressure way down to off meds, aches and pains way down, general daily energy up, and more postive results.
That said, I look forward to going to a low carb, not keto diet when I hit my weight goals.

I"m looking at an ad for Keanu Reeves about stopping a crazy biker who was kicking a dog. ho-hum. But, it popped into my brain (after eating my lunch of grass fed ground beef) that this was like a doctor who "kicks" his patient for the sake of paradigmatic progress, ignoring the needs of the patient. I have questions about my supposed diabetes, arrived at basically because of a .2 point above a1c of 5.7. My doctor jumps to stimulating diabetes, and I picked up on the fact that now I was hungry after 3 hours, eating every 3 hours, stimulating more insulin. That is how I started this 25 years ago. Now I eat mostly grass fed beef, and a few salads, because they appear to be glucose neutral, and I like salad. In 4 days I dropped 4 lbs. Have to see if that continues.

How about we talk about all the lies being told about and the misinformation on a high carb diet being spewed out to people. I'm a type 1 diabetic who has followed the exact instructions from my endocrinologists and medical teams and it only caused more problems and made blood sugars harder to control. Switching to a carnivore diet I've been able to drop my a1c from 11 down to 7.8 in 3 months which dr's said would take me 2-4 years. I had developed a significant amount of lumps of scar tissue at my injection sites. My Dr's have specifically told me across the board that once these lumps develope they will absolutely never go away and are permanent with no cure. After about two months into the diet they started shrinking. Nerve damage in my right eye causing a blind spot which was progressively getting worse and I was told the only options were laser surgery, or getting injections. I've been getting injections and following their advice and directions for 4 years with two needles in my eye once a month. The injections barely kept me stable and despite lowering blood sugars from an a1c of 13 down to 11, after a year on carno the noticeable feeling of built up pressure is gone, blind spot gone, internal bleeding and swelling reduced on imaging by 80% and have been moved onto a significantly reduced amount of injections. I had lost feeling in the heel of both my feet and I can now feel them again. I was severely depressed, anxious, suicidal, brain fog, distracted, lethargic, constantly sore body and random nerve pain. The only thing that has made a difference is a change in diet. Granted there may be other solutions for these things but at 26 and trying out every recommended treatment by the mainstream medical community with no success, and now making such significant progress in what seems to be every problem area at once is enough anecdotal eveidence for me.
