    I'm an old Carnivore at 61. Something worth remembering is "Carnivore" is eating meat and drinking water, But it creates a problem for the "Influencers" in that once said it ends the money train so "Eat meat, drink water, sprinkle a little Salt" holds no profit beyond improved health.

Those last few items that I abuse are now gone (nuts, nut butters), and I do not miss the vegetables. My mild diverticulitis is now gone also. With carnivore I have zero cravings. Carnivore is a ketogenic diet. It's just a specific form of it that has fewer clinical and scientific studies as of the current time. He regularly says that if it works for you, he doesn't see any reason that it would be a problem and often supports doctors who advocate for carnivore diets. He just tends toward evidence based medicine (a specific philosophy toward clinical recommendations), but does not say that carnivore is a bad idea, merely that it is less examined due to being a newer form of a traditional ketogenic diet.
      You are still on a ketogenic diet. Your particular diet consists of a carnivore style. The improvement is likely because you were either having some excess carbs sneak into your diet, or you are especially sensitive to them. You lowered the amount of carbs and saw success, which is what Doctor Westman repeatedly states to do -- he's also very against nuts and nut butters, as he's seen them become an issue with cravings and hidden carbs in his clinical experience. You both agree; no need for the "But" in your second sentence.

    • @FC-PeakVersatility

      I really struggle to cut out the nut butters and dairy. I try not to buy them but, sometimes, the craving just gets too strong.

    • @JimWooddell
      @JimWooddell 3 месяца назад +4

      @FC-PeakVersatility There really is nothing wrong with "dairy", it just depends on the kind. Humans have been using dairy for a bazillion years. Raw milk, pure heavy cream have great fats in them, for example. Some people do not tolerate dairy well.

    • @FC-PeakVersatility
      @FC-PeakVersatility 3 месяца назад +4

      @@JimWooddell some people cannot tolerate milk at all because they don't have the genetics that would enable them to handle it. Like cows don't eat meat. But that's not the point, in terms of a carnivore, ketovore, even the plain old ordinary low carb keto diet, milk is high in carbs and can actually cause weight gain.

    It’s key to note that S&BG never really had a weight issue. She had many other health issues (mostly inflammation based) which she resolved by going to a strict carnivore diet. So very different from those looking to lose weight. She’s trying to get ALL of her dietary calories from fat, not carbohydrates. I’m not in her specific camp, but it works for her and that’s great. Most of her information, while anecdotal, is generally good.

      @wxdave5448 she did lose some weight though when she switched from vegan to carnivore. She definitely was not "fat" by today's standards. But she did lose some weight. But you're right, it was mostly health issues that she was plagued with that it helped heal.

    • @CarbageMan
      @CarbageMan 3 месяца назад +12

      I think that's part of the confusion brought by many youtubers. Their perspective is locked in to their on personal "why." Keto and carnivore have been embraced for lots of reasons. For me, I went keto to beat diabetes, and it was "legit" keto, so it was a bit light on protein. It did its job, and I tried carnivore, but ended up high-protein, low-carb. I do like being in light ketosis, though, because I found that keto helped with my chronic pain from degenerative disc disease-to the point where I'm not always in pain anymore. It literally (and I _mean_ literally) changed my life.

    The recommendation of not drinking liquids during your meal is an old well known advice among Chinese culture. The water not only fills you up, but also dilutes saliva and stomach acids which impair your digestion. This can lead to indigestion and gas discomfort, and lessen nutrient absorption. Also note in other cultures, ie. the Med. they usually offer an apre-digestive following your meal to drink. Whatever you do, don't drink ice cold liquids with your meal!

    Been on carnivore for 2+ years helping my recovery from terrible health problems from 7 years as a vegan. I don't have any of the ill effects of eating my meals with the extra liquid fat, I love it, as it improves each bite of meat. Flavor, texture, mouth feel. No after effects. No ill effects from eating butter either. I believe it may have some relation to how high the heat exposure to the cooking fats, if you are searing a steak, the fats may be burnt, full of bits of oxidized food material and burnt seasonings. ie. garlic, pepper, and these may be irritating the gut. These are carcinogenic.
    I pour the cooking fat onto my beef, pork, lamb afterwards, whether from the pan or from drippings in an over/air fryer. If it's not burnt.

I don’t have a “stop eating” signal like others do when they go on keto. I’m always starving - I can eat a pound of ribeye and be starving an hour or two later.
    High fat and adding butter helps me a lot more than just plain keto did and I instantly lost a ton more weight. I’m using Dr Elizabeth brights method of high fat carnivore and Dr brownsteins high dose iodine protocol to help with thyroid problems because regular keto didn’t work beyond helping me lose some weight. As soon as I switched to high fat carnivore, I had a ton of improvement with hormones and lost more weight.

    the issues starting carnivore is the liver adjusting to the amount of bile is needed to be produced. this is common even after gall bladder removal for the liver to take time to adjust. with full carnivore the average is about 3 weeks, you get flu like symptoms, then it completely stops. Adding fat to meat isn’t common carnivore. Adding animal fat is part of carnivore. Rendered fat is the liquid cooked fat, that if you eat it on carnivore, you will get diarrhea. She was stating this is a common MISTAKE carnivore dieters make. I made this mistake myself and experienced diarrhea. I am not lactose intolerant so i include dairy in my carnivore diet. I like your channel but Steak and Butter gal is not a good example of a bad example. She is inline with Dr Ken Berry, and many others if you watch her videos in context. KETO’s down side is having to Calculate, on carnivore there is only one calculation 1 gram of protein per kg of body weight. the added butter, dairy fat, animal fat is dependent on how active of a lifestyle someone has. The reduced water intake, this is a habit change as when you reduce the indigestible plant fiber, you do not need to consume as much water not being needed to process the plant matter and being reabsorbed in the large intestine. After 3 weeks you will completely break your carbohydrate addiction, and will find that “sugar addiction” is what has you with uncontrollable hunger. Been doing full Carnivore with added Dairy 8 months now. Lost 30lbs safely and my last annual bloodwork came back excellent. no longer on BP meds, and pain meds. as far as not understanding the rendered heated liquid fat, and cold fat, cold fat prevents diarrhea, you can allow the rendered fat to cool then eat it but doesn’t make since as the rest of your meal (the meat) will also be cold, butter is a more convenient option as it is normally kept cold and can be consumed with your warm meal. i experienced diarrhea and almost stopped carnivore until i saw Steak and Butter Gal’s video about this. KETO is great if you have a tool to measure if you are in Ketosis, on carnivore you don’t have to measure. Most carnivore channels, the good one’s recommended to customize the carnivore diet to include increasing some carbs if you have an active lifestyle. I also like your channel btw. Both your channel and Steak and Butter Gal’s channel has helped me life a much healthier life. I can fit into my blue jeans from high school at 51.

I recently started gaining weight back and my blood glucose was climbing upwards (type 2 diabetic off meds for several years). I went back to simple keto - but first printed out phase 1 of your book (again), and wow! I feel 100% better. Hoping that everything else follows suit.

Don’t blindly follow suggestions immediately, take it in assess and try if it makes sense to you. I found my issue of having to mind how close I drink to my meals was solved by cutting down the size of my meal. I used to eat OMAD out of preference, only one problem, my digestive tract didn’t agree. Now I break up my meal into three meals. My body is thrilled with my decision, no more issues digesting my food.

    When I initially started carnivore. I would often get soft stools usually around a 6 on bowel movement charts.
    Increasing Salt intake would usually settle my stomach.
    I make bone broth and keep the tallow for cooking, I don't use this as a "gravy" and I throw it away.
    The one thing that used to guarantee diarrhoea - again I only did this at the start was MCT oil. My bowel movement would be a 7 on a chart (which is entirely liquid), would often start within 1 hour after consuming MCT oil.
    I only drink water/tea/coffee when I'm thirsty, total of cups of fluid vary from day to day anywhere from 4 Up to 12 cups. Depending on weather (I live in a hot humid tropical climate). Sport etc.
    I'm never thirsty after eating a steak or bone broth etc.

    I see the point of using the body's fat stores for energy if weight loss is the goal, which it isn't always the case, but, as a case study where n=1, I eat my desired body weight (160 lbs) in grams of protein (160 gr.) and a like or greater quantity of fat per day. I lost 90 pounds in less than six months. I'm having trouble squaring those two circles unless the amount of fat I consume is less than that required for energy. I'm also trying to figure out the need for poisonous plant consumption when animal meat/fat provides everything necessary (I have never heard of a carnivore who has suffered from scurvy or other deficiency issue). What am I missing?

      @@graveseeker my take on this is anything that causes inflammation or damage will require the body to prioritize healing against it, thus hoarding resources that could be instead used for something else more important, rendering the body weaker against non-deliberate damage. Then again, the body may be able to eliminate those toxins out pretty quickly, but some of them get stored in the body fat or tissues, don't know if that's true 100%, but as a previously obese guy, my goal had always been the combination of optimising autophagy, reducing/eliminating fat-storing, getting more nutrients and saving money, thus making knowledge about plant toxins irrelevant, because I would already eliminate them

But if I have leaner cut (I raised my own steer and then bought half a steer), I will add butter because I don't tolerate (hard to swallow) lean meat very well. I either need a gravy or butter added to it. I may add some Keto elements down the road, but will not be going back to grains. Learned the hard way it wouldn't be a good idea.

On the neutral side, my lypomas (fat globules just under the skin) have not improved, the peripheral neuropathy in my toes has not improved nor have my arthritic knees gotten any less painful. Its interesting. I was low carb in the late 70s using Atkins book. Then after losing weight went off the diet. I know, dumb. Decades later I was severely overweight and ill, i went low carb, started reading medical/nutritional studies, following various influencers in the nutrition field and migrated to keto. But I had problems with oxalates, and kidney stones. Finally went carnivore. This has been nearly a decade in the evolution. My personal experience has been a mix of what Dr Westman is saying, but also some of what Bella is saying. If i want to drive to therapeutic ketosis I have to lower protein by stopping before satiated, and fill in with fats be it butter, mct, or other. If I don't then gluconeogenesis will drive my blood glucose too high and I will not see ketosis at all, and will maintain high blood sugar which I do not want to do since high BG on carnivore is, in my opinion still damaging to your body even though there are some out there that think high BG on carnivore is somehow not damaging.

    Keto is a gateway to carnivore. For some keto is hard to sustain because the vegetables can cause cravings or actual health issues.
    The vegetables can help control oxylate dumping. But aside for that they have no value. Except as a garnish.
    Now you got me upset. You are still block headed doc. It's true some people can occasionally add too much fat. But don't tell people to restrict fat calories to lose weight. Weight loss should never be your goal. 5:05 And often people need to add fat to their diet. Especially women. Especially women trying to lose weight. Often their calorie intake is way too low. I grew up on veg but they do me no favors. I would love to basically eat lots of broccoli and lettuce but they really bloat me and leave me hungry.

Of course, there's the point about antinutrients, which is well-explored, but I think another perspective is useful for putting the whole picture together.

      Doctors have no answers just pills to make things worse while they get paid to make you worse. I’d strongly suggest ridding your diet of all fiber. No greens. No nuts. You’ll heal in no time and perhaps you can eventually add them back if you want to feel worse again.

      I had some episodes of bad stomach pain, cramping fever...my doctor thought it was IBS..... I told him I thought it was diverticulitis....had an ultrasound and that confirmed diverticulitis. One episode was so bad (as you know) I couldn't describe the pain. The crazy thing is they say it's caused by a low fibre diet......but I was eating a very high fibre diet.....then when you get it it they say too much fibre is bad and to eat a low fibre diet.......went los carb bordering on carnivore and never had another problem with it......

    Around water, as many other things, there is always a back and forth, for me make no sense,just drink when you feel the necessity and for the ammount that you need,instead of overcomplicate things.
    It happens in every sector, including gymnastics, just feel your own body,instead of follow opposite reccomendations.
    Anyway the real problem is never be exposed at multiple approach but to be exposed at only the official approach, just because most people don't want to think, so they like take away any possible options, for the rest, with the usual excuse of a supposed certain safety from the ufficial expert.

    Did ketogenic diet since May 2014 to January 2024. I enjoyed many benefits but quit losing weight and the rheumatoid arthritis returned.
    Now carnivore for the past 9 months and my joint pain has receded since eliminating all plant derived food, particularly my morning joe 😞
    After I reach my desired weight, I may reintroduce one new plant derived food at a time to test my response and eventually broaden my dietary scope. I am thinking of Eskimo Pies, first. 🙂

I tend to go more towards steak and butter gal and feel she has a lot of really good pointers! The liquid fat thing is something I had never heard, but it is totally right on. I also have learned to go with what I crave. If the juice from a steak smells and looks appealing, I will pour it over the meat. You mention that you learned under Atkins, etc. Keep in mind that there wasn’t much clinical data for them to go on, they had to experiment to create data to learn from. I understand and respect the reticence to jump to conclusions but I just remind you that if Atkins had decided not to explore what eventually became the Atkins diet because he felt there wasn’t sufficient clinical evidence at that time, you wouldn’t have learned anything from him. I started eating butter (by itself) in the mornings due to videos by Dr. Elizabeth Bright, again being open to experimentation. The one notable effect is that it drops my blood sugar significantly. I’m one of those keto/low carb people whose A1C was rising, and though my CGM showed extremely flat lines, I constantly had numbers like 122, 115, and my A1C had got to 6.0 despite eating almost no carbs. “You were cheating!” No I wasn’t. Eating a couple squares of butter, about 20 minutes later I’d see the glucose drop 20-30 points and STAY down for at least a couple of hours. At last measurement (I’d only been using the butter for 6 weeks prior to the test) A1C was 5.7. I’m looking forward to my next test in about six months, hoping the trend continues. Because it has worked for me so far doesn’t make it a universal truth and more data is needed of course, but beware of the “I haven’t gone there before so I can’t go there” anti-exploratory stagnation which is one of the reasons medicine has been stuck for so long.

Waist changed from 40" to 34". Most of my issues of Gerd, painful joints gas, bloating eczema, are just absolutely gone. Where are your thoughts on this new theory put forth about cruciferous vegetables blocking our ability to assimilate adequate Iodine from our foods, do you think we are iodine deficient here in the US. My BS meter seems to go off when I watch her videos, unlike when I watch Shawn Baker's. There's a lot of dogma on her channel, and in much of the low-carb world. I like how you review these videos.
    I'm "high-protein," low-carb, making me "not really keto" and "not really carnivore." I was keto for about three years, and beat diabetes. I tried carnivore, but I like my non-starchy veg, and I feel I benefit from it.
    I never felt the need to go crazy with oils and butter, but I confess to liking a splash of olive oil on vegetables. As a rule, I like to eat the fat with the meat it comes with, and eating whole fat dairy (but not a lot of it.) I do cook my meats sous vide and pour the jus on it, considering that a win.

    I think these items are very personal for her and should not be presented as a general advice. Liquid or solid fat becomes the same once ingested and most carnivores certainly eat the fat that comes with the meat. Drinking lots of water during and right after meals is a bad idea, before is not a big problem. The water will leave the stomach quickly. I always thought this to be common knowledge. At the end she becomes really irritating. Tell the viewers that they don't have to count calories, just eat till full, and leave it there. This is a personal decision, what is right for one person, may not be right for another person.

      The body is able to regulate its own appetite naturally when you're not eating addictive high carb/high sugar foods and having a proper nutritious human diet. Look for "why do I crave mustard?" (I had that) "why do I crave ..." in general, when referring to any specific food other than meat, the consensus may be "a nutritional deficiency", these things just don't happen to a carnivore, 1.5 month in, I only get "hungry" I can't eat too much meat, I get full easily, my tastebuds won't just say "it's tastes too good to stop", that's just not a natural response

    • @dimseablue136

      The concept of food "calories" didn't even appear until somewhere in mid-19th century, I don't think people had problems back then, people definitely ate instinctually, when food is so addictive nowadays no wonder people count calories, you lose track easily

    • @Desertflower743
      @Desertflower743 2 месяца назад

      In response to the commenter, Sorry but steak and butter gal is correct. Once you’re adapted to meat eating you let your own body regulate its energy needs. You can’t do that with vegetables and donuts because the body never gets satiated from them, just full up with digestive work. Water is a matter of choice, some people need to drink while eating in order to swallow, others get a tummy upset if they drink too much around meal times. Our bodies use water or pass it through depending on whether we need it or not. Everyone’s different. Water isn’t a digestible material, it’s ignored by our digestive juices so it cannot “water down’ our system. As for fats, liquid fats make some people nauseous and they do better with solid fats like cold butter. Everyone can benefit from the fat natural to the meat, however, it’s neither solid nor runny when meat is cooked, it’s Goldilocks perfect.

    What she said does match my personal experience, except the cold fat part. I have not experimented with cold fat. No opinion on that. Eating too much fat does give me nausea and diarrhea. To Dr. Westman's credit, adding more fiber (veggie) does help. My guess (non-scientific) is that the extra fiber slows down the food movement through the intestine and allows more time for the intestine to re-absorb bile. This problem does go away over time.

    I know on keto, hunger goes away, but for me the cravings have not gone away, so even though I don't track, I do eat more often then I should. I am pretty sure I am getting more calories than I need. I think stress is a big factor in this as well as years of eating the SAD and using food to replace cigarettes. I don't eat processed junk food, but occasionally I do have a keto chocolate, and each day I do eat in the morning, in the mid afternoon and a dinner meal. I usually stop eating by 7 pm and don't eat again until about 10 am. After taking a round of meloxicam for a shoulder pain, I started gaining weight again after losing a bit and since then I haven't been able to lose any more weight. Ugh.
