The real reason Aldi’s does the quarter thing is to minimize cart damage to cars on the parking lot and to cut down on cart retrieval time which helps keep prices low. It’s a very good thing.
In Germany (where Aldi is from) every company has had this mechanism for ages to a point where people stopped thinking about it. (Common belief is those mechanisms prevent others from stealing the carts.) Children grow up, learning to always carry a coin (50 cent and 1 euro usually fit) and bring the cart back after shopping. Recently, some companies started testing carts that do not require a coin anymore (so people could actually leave them in the parking lot), but everyone still brings their cart back naturally.
In Germany we actually have tokens for the carts in just about every jacket pocket. I use old French and Irish coins (from the pre-Euro days). All kind of stores offer the tokens as a free gift on occasion. The stealing of the carts used to be a huge thing especially in the bigger cities. Which was an annoyance for the store and for the city that had to deal with the abandoned carts.
@@brassbando wow you guys really went all in on the covid hysteria over there... There's literally nothing removing the coin slot would do to stop the spread
For those who shopped Aldis 20 years ago when everything there was unhealthy, THINGS HAVE CHANGED! They have so many great options now and the best prices anywhere!
I was just thinking about the .50 bag of ham and roast beef they used to have. My family used to stock up on those, there’s no way they were healthy lol. Those, instant potatoes, ramen noodles, Salisbury steaks, and potpies. Now they have so many good things. I remember hearing on the news that they wanted to go more organic like 5-6 years ago. I remember thinking “there goes the cheap prices”. lol
@@mycatsballs8195 Aldi's is great. For $65 I get a few bags (chicken/fruits/lettuce/eggs/Coconut milk/Greek yogurt/Eggs etc) compared to stop n shop $120 gets you 1 bag, if you're lucky.
I was just there today. These prices really haven’t changed much. They even have pasture raised eggs. Or should I say , pseudo- pasture raised eggs. Still the cheapest I’ve found around.
Aldi loyalist here! They were smart for letting you finish, you served Aldi and their customers well with that mega-drop of knowledge! They listen to their customers, and the 2.4million+ eyes on this probably just picked them up some more. 🙏
For anyone who doesn't know: grab empty boxes off the shelves! The employees don't mind, and its a great alternative to paying for bags. Do it everytime and no one gives me a second look.
They actually like you to take the boxes because then they don't have to break them down. My Aldi locations have a cage they toss them into for customers to take.
Yeah I worked there for a while it makes it easier bc we keep the aisles looking nice by taking products out of the half empty boxes and just stacking the product on full boxes. So less work
Almost every European store has cardboard or wooden boxes for you at the entrance (or if you ask). Also, in Europe, small plastic bags are banned, so everyone goes shoping with backpacks, boxes, or large reusable bags.
@Seby PT he is right, dont know for whole europe but here in belgium we dont get small bags anymore. you take your own re-usable bags or buy one at the store
I just found your channel after watching Dr. Burg. I was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at 43. I suffered a spinal cord injury 2 years ago and have been pretty inactive since. I’ve always been a fat guy, but I was on the way to getting into shape before my accident. I couldn’t walk for almost a year. I’m still recovering but I’m finally able to do low impact exercises. I just joined the YMCA so I could start using the pool for exercising. The doctor has me on all kinds of medications that I don’t want to be on for the rest of my life. So this is the start of my plan to get off them. Keto, IF and exercise. I know I can do this. Wish me luck. I’m so glad I found your channel!!
I appreciate this because I have a problem with a repetitive diet in order to maintain keto because I have a busy schedule and prepare meals for the whole week. This will provide me with some great variety. One thing I would like to suggest though for greens is dandelion greens if you can find them?
Love you advise on healthy eating, I’ve been a vigilant healthy eater for most of my life got married and my husband is the worst when it comes to healthy eating and these videos help me educate him and motivate him to change his eating habits because I feel that when I tell him he just don’t think I know what I’m saying so thank you thank you. Can you can do a video on Ollies unless you already did. Thank you
Exactly what I was thinking! Excellent idea. Because I have no idea except for the one "meal" he mentioned how to match all that up with meals that makes sense.
I just started Keto a couple of weeks ago. It's getting easier but... I learned a lot from this video about extra ingredients and comparisons. Thanks for doing this, Thomas. I know it's over 2 years old but the info is good. I'll be watching more.
He's a product pimp! Simply eat more fatty foods. Keto for 3 or 4 months to get you metabolicly adaptive. Don't do it long term and don't fall for all the useless crap he sells.
Just so you're aware: Trader Joe's is actually owned by Aldi! Aldi's US headquarters are in Batavia, IL. Just a five minute drive from Fermi Lab (an high security Particle Accelerator - I grew up near there). They're a German owned company that when they first came to the US they were a low quality, high "stock up" type store. They've have made HUGE leaps in quality, healthy choices and they do not allow any High Fructose Corn Syrup in any of their branded products. They're entire "Never Any" line of meats and produce is AMAZING! What really turned the tables for them was bringing in Trader Joe's. That allowed Aldi foods to have more "clout" to be able to bring more healthy choices to their original Aldi stores as well. Aldi really can make a HUGE difference for budget conscious and healthy choices minded families. Bravo for bringing us that Clean Keto Haul from Aldi!
JussyRaven2 without the Trader Joe things it is the same over here in the Netherlands. When I was young they just had a few things, none known brands, just their own. Now they grown, have clothing and other stuff, but also brand products are getting more common now.
Even in Germany they made that huge leap in quality. Aldi used to be the super budget market where you basically "get the quality you pay for" but nowadays their fresh and frozen fruit, veggies, meat are really good. You obviously still have to check, since there is always cheaper junk around but the options got a lot better now.
Actually, there are two different Aldi's, Aldi North and Aldi South. They also have a slightly different logo. Trader Joe's is Aldi North in the United States while Aldi South is Aldi. It used to be one company but in 1961 the two brothers that inherited it from their father decided to seperate it because they couldn't agree on how to run the company.
This was the first of your videos I watched. It was in Dec 19 and it saved my life! Because of this I lost 25lbs in January, my blood sugar went from 200 to 95 and my liver numbers went from the upper 100's to normal all in 1 month. Plus, my doctor took away one of my blood pressure meds! Thank you!
Buy Italian sardines, they are in olive oil. Also you can make fish patties with them. So simple, crushed Porkrinds, 1egg, seasoning. Mash it all up and form into patties. Fry or air fry !! Yum!!!
Aldi's prices for good clean food, does rock. I shop there all the time, and I'm Keto. Secret, use the empty boxes throughout the store as your grocery bag/box. Or, buy the cloth reusable bags ($1.50) they have there like I do in Chicago. I'm down 43 lbs. from watching your videos. :)
Do you find all these things at your Aldi's? Mine does not have all these great options and they're in an affluent neighborhood. If you do see these at your store---please let me know which one you go to. Thanks!
@@apophispnw5717 Well, when most of us shop, we also already have a bunch of stuff at home -- pantry staples and some food in the freezer -- that you'd combine with your newly bought groceries into a meal. But otherwise, yes, it's better to shop with a few specific meals in mind for breakfast, lunch, supper and snacks so you buy ingredients that you might be able to use for more than one meal.
One thing I appreciate about Aldi is the quarter for a cart thing. I feel like this makes it so shopping carts don't end up in the side of your car. And honestly I never in a million years thought frozen veggies were good options. I'm definitely going to focus on that now.
The employees at my Aldi‘s in Lake Zurich Illinois are the kindest hard-working people I’ve ever experienced. I always look forward to shopping there!😎
This is my first time watching, I can’t tell you how happy I am that you did a “discount store “ shopping. People always think if they can’t get the most expensive, high end, they are missing out and can’t be successful. Thanks for the education and making clean eating accessible for any income!
Ive shopped at Aldis since I was a child. Im 35 now. They really are doing a good job at providing healthier options for less money. I especially like their produce and meat. 80% of my monthly grocery shopping is done at Aldis.
@@realsimpleketo8890 I'm at maintenance now roughly 130 grams of protein 140 grams of fat and 20 net carbs When I was cutting I was eating about 90-100 grams of protein and 100ish grams of fat. Some people look at Aldi like the supermarket for the poor. Actually I love the quality and the warranty! I save and I can get good clean food in there. Whatever I don't find, I go to another store but this is my first option always. The one by my neighborhood has the most friendly staff ever too! :) Thanks for the video...I really enjoyed it!
I love shopping there my husband loves Walmart better because he said his more variety. That I just like Aldi's a lot better and another thing that makes Aldis lot easier to shop at is they move stuff as much as Walmart does if you're half-blind that's not good because I I like to shop where I know where everything is when I go into Walmart one month Juice might be in when I'll in the next month it will be moved to another aisle I hate that it takes me 2 hours to shop because of that I can go in down all these find what I need within 30 minutes and be out
I thought that, too, until I tasted their food. Unfortunately, that was when I was eating bread. But I have convinced many people to give it a chance. Aldi's is doing a great thing for Americans. We're getting better food for less.
Please do a cooking segment after you buy your groceries from that store.. thank. You.!! It’s so helpful love your channel new subscriber as of a week ago. I’m hooked your very informative Thomas!!!
Anyone here from Canada in 2024 with the same stores but instead of 3 dollars for whatever it is now 10 dollars. 15 dollars for a wedge of parmigian cheese. Bootle of avocado oil 25 dollars maybe more. He walked out with more than 300 dollars of groceries.
That’s definitely not why they have boxing carts out on the floor, but it is convenient for customers and saves us some more room in the baler when customers take them home

The Aldi Irish butter registers in myfitnesspal as Kerrygold when you scan the bar code, so it might be the same stuff with different packaging like a lot of Aldi's products.

@Why Me Nope, I'm on the east coast of USA. I'm surprised how consistent their stores are to over here. I'm not sure why it would be different for your area though.
I found out about Aldi when i lived in the UK. Aldi was on the end of our street, across from Tesco. I fell in love with Aldi. Then when i came back to Texas, it took some years, but we now have Aldi here in Austin! Same great store!
Chan Ding I‘m from Germany myself and I didn’t even know there were any stores that don’t require you to put in a coin as a „deposit“. That’s just the way it is and I think it makes perfect sense. I never even thought about it until Thomas mentioned it. 😂
@@Gabriel-of-RUclips Yeah obviously as it's only a deposit so you don't just leave it next to your car but actually bring it back. If there was no money of yours in there you might be tempted to just leave it somewhere on the other side of the parking lot and even though its only a small amount of money this way people will surely think twice before doing that
Loved seeing your excitement every time you found something you didn’t expect. It made me smile to hear you say “whoa!” It’s fun to experience a new store and make discoveries instead of same old-same old shopping on automatic like a zombie.

I looove your videos. Common sense approach. You and Dr. Ken Barry are the only guys I listen to regarding health. My family and I have shipped at Aldi for 10+ years, and I'm very pleased that their selections have greatly improved throughout the years. They offer organic, clean foods for us folks who are on tight budgets. Everyone is probably now because of hyper inflation, but Aldi tries very hard to keep their prices reasonable. A triple thumbs up to this video! God bless you!
I was planning on skipping this video because I don’t usually shop at Aldi, however you talk about so much stuff that I hadn’t heard before even though I watch a ton of your videos. I ended up loving the content and walking away with a lot of practical advice. Thanks!
Classic Aldi newb. No quarter, distracted by the loading dock bells, surprised by the selection and prices. Thanks for the video. Appreciate the keto lense to shopping at Aldi.
I thought those aspects made it realistic and fun. I don't always appreciate things that are overly rehearsed, for people with a lackluster personality. I did not expect to watch this entire video due to its length, but he kept me interested there were lots of educational tidbits, more than just a plain old "what I eat" type video
Love your videos! This is very helpful because I'm shopping at Aldi this weekend. For future shopping trips, don't forget to start with your non-perishables first & get your perishables last, so that they stay cold & fresh until you get home.😊👍🏽
I made a small attempt on Keto but wasn’t very successful. However, I love how quick and clear you are with describing ingredients. And even if I am not interested in keto, you had me at “healthy eating on a budget.” So THANKS! I learned so much in the few minutes of watching you!
I shop at aldis on a regular basis, it's my go to grocery store. First of as I'm sure people have already mentioned, the quarter for a cart thing is genius. If a customer pays a quarter to use the cart they will return the cart themselves in order to get that quarter back. No need to pay an employee to gather the carts which is one of the many ways they are able to keep prices low. Don't shy away from those aldi brand name items! Also don't think they may be inferior to brand name products. What people don't realize is these items may be the exact same product you buy with that brand name on it. As an example, I purchased their burmans aldi brand ketchup. When I turned the bottle over I noticed a mixup from the plant and it still had the red gold upc on the back. So essentially it was red gold ketchup rebranded as burmans.. They may not have as much of a selection as the larger chains but you can get more groceries at a lower price without sacrificing quality. Also I'll point out you do bag your own groceries there. You purchase the bags at the register or just take some empty boxes off the shelf and use them. This makes Chekout much quicker as the cashier doesn't bag anything. Two thumbs up on this video
But they get paid more than a cashier who does bag the items. The Aldi cashiers just sit there and scan and throw them in the cart. But they get paid more than real cashiers? Tisk, tisk...
You're a Godsend! I have an Aldis and the only thing I get there regularly is the Coconut oil, Organic washed kale, avocado oil & organic coffee! The almond butter there is tasty but I realized it has a lot of sugar added! This video really helps me to find some meats there! THANK YOU!!!
Wowwww I live within walking distance from an Aldi and never considered shopping there! I can't get over the salmon prices! I just paid $12.99 at Harris Teeter and more at Publix! Yiesh! And what a nice lady at the register!🥰
Oh my God the breath of knowledge that this man knows and presents in these videos is honestly a little bit overwhelming!! Definitely an expert in his field
LOVE Aldi. It’s my go-to in Nashville. Eating clean and cheap. And I was waiting to see what you thought when you return the cart to get your quarter back. So glad you showed that lol
Today is my first day on keto. I've tried it in the past but failed because unfortunately I really love carbs.. but this time I'm going to make it and I won't quit, no matter what the rest of my family eat. I want to do this for myself and for my health (I have insulin resistance and pcos). I've tried many diets in the past but nothing worked. I want to give this a shot and see if anything changes in one month. At least I want to be able to say I tried. You never know until you try, right? Wish me luck:)
Kroger sells smoked oyster in sunflower oil (pink/white box/can). Cottonseed oil is highly toxic. Chemicals are permitted on cotton field that are banned for all other produce. It's a giant toxic soup loophole. Of course, rinsing would reduce.......but still, do you really want to be ingesting banned chemicals? With all the chemicals allowed....just imagine how bad a substance has to be for the govt. to ban it.
Yes, it was comical to see him not know what to think of the quarter dealio. LOL. He could've grabbed boxes to pack his stuff in, Aldi in MO lets you do that. But I am no novice, I come in with my TJ's big blue cooler bag and I get all that i need stuffed in it. :) Single shopper though, so it's easy-peasy :)
@@Dudenawdude - My Aldi will give you a quarter if you don't have one. Half the time I forget to bring my shopping bags, so I end up grabbing a couple of their boxes (like I did today).
Great video. Love Aldi! You walked right past the bone broth though!! It’s the best price there and not always available so it’s worth grabbing. Also, Aldi has the sardines in spring water. I usually have to dig for them though. Pasture raised is better than both options you mentioned and Aldi has them! Other GREAT things you missed: The Protein Yogurt there, which only comes in fat free unfortunately, is a Greek Yogurt blend and has 19 grams of protein! I eat that one because I don’t see anything added as far as sugar etc, compared to the Whole fat Greek. I spend a little extra for the extra protein. My boyfriend eats the Organic, Whole Greek Yogurt there. Both are great! You also missed the large jars of Sauerkraut. I think they are only around $1.89. You’ll find better nut options in the baking isle. I get my walnuts there. Love the cocoa powder there! They just recently stopped carrying it year round though. I recommend grabbing it when you see it. Last tip….they do have boxes everywhere that they welcome everyone to grab and use! Thanks for posting. It’s my first video to see of yours. That was fun!
If you ask the cashier, they'll loan a quarter. It's a brilliant idea which Aldi uses to keep their prices low. It prevents them from having to keep an employee on staff just to round up carts from the parking lots.
Really enjoyed this video! Would be great to do one at another shop nowadays to see if anything has changed or even at a restaurant to see how someone can manage say if they're out for a special occasion.

$600/mo for two adults and one kid. Pretty reasonable. Great choices. Thanks for the Aldi walk-thru. I discovered Aldi's recently and will have to investigate further. It's interesting how major grocery stores stock almost exclusively UNhealthy keto products. It always ends up on the clearance rack. I think they want us to keep eating garbage (labeled keto) while giving other shoppers the idea that keto isn't selling. True psychological warfare. Stay clean and safe, folks.
The organic grass fed ground beef is also grass finished. I’m a Bobby FlavCity fan and remember him saying it’s also grass finished after doing a little more digging into it. You’ll appreciate the quarter thing after awhile. It means NO car spots taken by carts .
And no dents in your car from random carts rolling around... and lower food prices since they don't need people to constantly bring carts back in...
Also the carts don't disappear from the store AND you'll get the quarter back.
Really surprised this is a thing. It's commonplace in Europe for the reasons listed! You can get key rings here with quarter sized trolley tokens.
You can use the head of a round key 🔑

They listen to their customers, and the 2.4million+ eyes on this probably just picked them up some more. 🙏
Yep! I haven't been in a long time.... Was shocked to see so many good options there. Think I will visit soon!
I didn’t go to Aldi for years and this video took me back.
If you can't afford cheap bags, no way can you afford this diet.
How are you doing now, 2 years later? I hope you are on still embracing a healthy lifestyle.

Same, keto has been great so far but kinda difficult with shopping, this helped me a ton
How you doing now?
Wow didnt know that thnx 4 info
im from Illinois but i did not know they were based out there, guess that explains why i see an Aldi when i drive every 5mins lol

I am a big smoked oyster fan also. Glad you offered those suggestions. Never thought of washing them. Thanks for the tip.
With all the chemicals allowed....just imagine how bad a substance has to be for the govt. to ban it.

One of my fav stores. Great job Thomas. They also sell reusable bags for .25
Did your almond milk taste extra good that day? :D
The poor man 😂😂😂😂
If you ask the cashier, they'll loan a quarter.
Also,Aldi brand Irish butter..same Irish standards for 80/20 of the year pasture/winter time grain feed! And cheaper! Yay Aldi
I love kerry gold, ill have to try aldis brand.
@@mrkanobe The Aldi butter scans in myfitnesspal as Kerrygold butter, so it's quite possibly the exact same thing. I've switched to using the Aldi brand and I can't tell the difference vs Kerrygold in flavor, texture, or anything.
Kerry gold is available at Costco but only pack of 3 . I think it's for 10$ .
YAY Aldi is right!
it's a 100 mile 'round trip to go to Aldi.....but, i'm inspired.....i was on medication for breathing issues....prednisone.....gained weight....on keto......have lost 16lbs. using just my local market.....must make the trip to Aldi......
I really appreciate this video. I shop at Aldi every payday and my husband and I are just beginning keto. It's nice to know I can still shop there and get quality foods on a budget. Plus I learned things to look for and things to avoid. Thank you!! I'm glad I found your video this morning!!
The cart quarter basically allows them to save a bit of cash since they don't have to pay someone to retrieve carts
I’m not sure why they don’t market that better but if you go to their website they say it there.
I really enjoy your videos! Keep up the great work.
Thank you for pointing that out❣️
bigestfan7 You’re welcome. I love this community and glad we can help each other out!
It also said “100% grass fed” which Bobby says is equivalent to grass fed + grass finished. 😊
Since he is feeding a family the total goes down to 37.09 per person in a household of four or, 49.45 per person in a household of three. That is not bad.
A Costco grocery haul video? Yes I absolutely do wish to see that Thomas!
Love the video. Just want to give a heads up as a Bison farmer, they most certainly can and are fed grains.
Yeah, thanks for taking the time for this. Our Farmstand has chickens and a dozen eggs are $7.99 but so clean and worth it. You’re HELPING Aldi get more customers! They should pay you!
Keto in the real world and not the yuppie world, good job Thomas 😎👍
I loved seeing you get excited and say "ooh" when you find something great! 😂
I absolutely LOVED this episode!
I LEARNED so much!
More of these, pretty please! 😊
Right after saying, “ in the past you might have grabbed the sweetened almond milk by mistake”, he grabbed the sweetened almond milk by mistake! 😂🤣
just by looking at the 90 calories per serving stamp he should have realized it has extra sugar, he even looked at the label too lol
@@angb8182 I was wondering did anyone else notice that as well. " HEY, the milk taste good this morning."
Yup, he picked the wrong one 🤣
Ok I thought I saw wrong! 🤣
i came here for this hahahah whoops
I LOVE the grocery hauls. It doesn't matter if that store chain is near my home or not. You mention so many nuggets of good info in these that one can apply to wherever one grocery shops. I find these very helpful for real world application. Thanks
You're adorable! Smart! And you are such a good dad and husband! Such a nice kid. Your mom and dad did great! Nice job buddy
@Reginald Williams huh? I'm old enough to be that boys mother. I'm 54 years old. What are you talking about. My boys are older than that kid. Good lord
@Reginald Williams lol sounds like you got a crush too
Try olive oil, salt and fresh lemon for your salad dressing. Very good. Just add items to taste.
Parmesan chips: shred some parm cheese, sprinkle into small piles on a non-stick baking dish. Cook 200 degrees until melted. Let cool. BAM!
Yeah, bc that small package of Parm crisps cost $4.99 at my Aldi's ...
@@dawncarroll2K Hmm. They're $2.99 at my metro ATL Aldi's.
You can also put the little piles on parchment paper and cook them in the microwave!
Aldi and Trader Joe’s are owned by same company. Love both.
Bison is actually the highest in protein of all meats.
Just starting my Keto journey today. I’ve got about 100lbs to lose.
Thanks for this video! I love to shop at Aldi’s and this video was so informative.
Bison at Kroger.
Sherryl McCauley Good luck on your journey. I’m watching and getting as much info as possible as I’ve just started too. It seems so opposite to what I’ve always been taught, but I know it can work.
Rachel Mayes
Thanks, and good luck to you too! This is my second round of doing Keto, and the last one got interrupted by vacation. Yes, it IS completely backwards from what we’ve been taught, I completely agree. It absolutely does work though. I’m still not completely sure why it does, but it does. I’m on my 3rd day, and my appetite is already shrinking, and get super full on less food than I did last week, and I feel better too.
Just remember to drink 2 shots of Apple Cider Vinegar too. It’s nasty, and you can dilute it with water, but it sure does help.
I wish you the best! You can do it!
Good luck
I am probably out of the loop, but i just recently learned about "grass finished" and you were talking about this THREE YEARS AGO! So I am subscribing and following you on my health journey!! Thank you Thomas!!!
I do like their dark chocolate- Moser Roth 85% cacao. The bell ringing is just a sign of a delivery out back.
John M Yes! Their chocolate is awesome!
I wish they did a 100% bar. Trader Joe's has a good one Montezuma
@@Phrinkle Trader Joe's is owned by Aldi too, interestingly
$150 / week is a budget? dang... I spend that per month, lol
Those cali prices
Hes also feeding his family lol
@@alexkennedy5133 dang, I feed me and my wife at £150 per month, but hey, London life ...
Just go plant based whole foods (not the store) and you will be fine. Keto is bullshit anyway. What this guy does with his channel is irresponsible misinformation.
That's for three people, not one.
Sardines in water at Aldi are in the light blue label 👍
My girlfriend also get really upset when I eat sardines lol
@George Ramos always eat with purpose.... Never for pleasure.
I've wanted to TRY sardines, but even just the THOUGHT of them makes me want to heave. Guess I'll just have to try 'em and see what happens.
@@JohnM... if the thought makes you want to have before having tried them.... After trying them could be much worse. Lol
I recall the first time I ate them, I wanted them before I tried them. For me it wasn't an acquired taste, I enjoyed them immediately.
However, getting to the end of the second can in a sitting I begin to loose my desire
@@JohnM... give them a go tho! Pretty nice energy boost when you need one...
@@JohnM... I love it with mustard.
