I read somewhere that Larry needs to see the lyrics to every song because he doesn't play listening to the bass, but rather to the lyrics, he uses the drums to help interpret the lyrics, a unique approach to drumming
Well they're all playing to a click track with cues telling them when to enter, to play fills, etc. Also they need to play with extreme precision or Edge's effects won't sound right, and obviously they need to be in sync with their video effects and backing tracks. So I guess they're not really listening to each other when playing live, but more focused on staying in time with the click.
people are saying his style is simple, it isn't, i just came here from a video saying that his drum grooves are unique.. and as a musician it is really interesting what he is doing, lots of rolls, i wonder is he got elements of it from trad irish music...
Larry Mullen Jr is not simply underrated, he is understated. His foundations allowed many of these songs to be built. This video highlights just some of the mesmeric beats and you reproduced them superbly. I enjoyed it immensely, thank you.
I legit started crying because I started thinking what I would do without u2. They have taken up all of my 12 years on this planet and when they die I don’t know what I’m going to do. I think I have just found a way to cope when it does happen. This is amazing. Words can’t describe how they and you have touched my heart.
Absolutely nailed it! I'm 50 years old now, been a fan 40 years, where I appreciate the newer stuff I'm still 'locked into' the Boy to Joshua Tree era as that's when I went from boy to man myself and where it resonates most for me. Excellent
Those tom rolls on “With or Without You” are amazing. Your video really does a great job of highlighting the subtly and kinetic nature of Larry’s playing style.
You are Sooooo spot on capturing Larry Mullins's style perfectly.U2 has always been one of those bands with a very distinct sound and approach to their music. And Larry Mullin is by far a drummer who never ever wanted to sound like someone else. 🙏 💜
This is an excellent video! Not only did you choose some of the most iconic songs and transition them beautifully, you both played the songs well and taught us how the sounds are born. One of the most exciting things for me when I listen to a U2 song is to try to figure out what Larry is doing to make the sounds that he does, and this is a nice visual cheat-sheet. If only every U2 concert had the option of DRUMCAM so we could see what goes into the songs. Thank you so much for this glimpse into the magic!
I would love to see an entire “Bad”. I’m a Keith Moon and John Bonham fan and recently got into U2. I’d heard somewhere that Larry was somehow lacking in his drum skills. Once I heard “Bad”, I realized wherever I had read that was BULL HOCKEY!! I can just saw @wow@ most of the time. Unfortunately he’s not as loud as Moon or Bonham and what a shame. They need to turn him up and rip the knob off!
Back again for my dose of U2. What you've done has farther reaching effects on U2 fans and others more than you know. We thank you so very much, especially in these stressful times we are ALL going through together. P.S. HOW ABOUT ANOTHER VIDEO?
Larry Mullen one of the most underrated drummers of our generation. I don't know how old you are son but you got some soul. I'd be nice to be back on the road again. 20+ years 2 San Diego Music Awards, it's all in you too brother, go get it! 🤘
Nadie ha tocado la batería en la historia cómo Larry Mullen jr. Austero. Armónico. Sensato. Pulcro. Profundo, con verdad. Su método es la verdad. Maravilloso.
I taught myself based on LMJ's drumming. His setup is a little different. He has two exact floor toms on either side and opens and then closes from each to the snare, hat, etc. but you've got this down pat, dude. Nice! I like LMJ. My first year in college (100 years ago) the kids called me Larry because I had high pointy hair and played drums.
Found this gem accidentally , thanks Justin for summarising the world of U2 in 9 mins. Never had seen such a good view of the drums of these timeless songs. God Bless.
I've been playing drums for over 40 years and I can see how great you are thank you very much for this wonderful video. to see young players play so well like you is a wonderful thing keep up the good job
Thankyou so much, I can't like this enough! Lifetime U2 listener but only paying attention to percussion since my daughter started drumming and she learned so much just by watching this.
I know nothing about drums but...... the drumming in Elvis Presley and America from the Unforgettable fire has haunted me for years, there's something about it. Love to see ya play it, thanks.
Thanks for singling out one of the more unique aspects of U2's music. I love Larry's use of cymbal accents. John Bonham of Led Zeppelin was a master of this. More cymbal! (at the right time)
Thanks a lot Brett! I'm a huge fan of Bonham too. I actually did the same type of video for Led Zeppelin. You might enjoy it being a Zep fan as well. Here's the link...ruclips.net/video/M-5MlAiweN8/видео.html
Just came back from their Joshua Tree tour date in Louisville, KY and had to hear a bit of Larry's style on drums again. A big thumbs up to you for having this here!
Here's hoping it is just as enjoyable for you. The sound was amazing and that display was fantastic. I'm amazed at just how well they all played and sounded.
I needed this... With what's happening now, in 2020, we all need something to hold on to, something that's good, something that's uplifting. This takes me back years when there was a lot of good, and knowing there's hope that things will get better. Maybe not as good as before, but better than what we have now. Thank you. And thank you U2. If only Elevation was here too 😁
I've seen them live I tweet them I've not met them however I can be sure everyday they are the worlds best an it's a joy I live on the earth 🌏 with them wherever they may be😁👍 Godspeed Nice covering these.
I think Larry was most flavorable on Unforgettable Fire and Joshua Tree. Would have loved to see you do One Tree Hill, that's a great drum song. Very nice selections though!
There's a simplicity to Larry's drumming that should be admired. Slight variations on Tom, floor tom, cowbell, 16ths on the hi-hats and that's about it. Ingenious really
This is an excellent video. Daniel Lanois said that the thing that marks Larry as a drummer is when you hear those riffs, you immediately recognize the song. Great!
Awesome 9 minute summary of 35 years of u2 music. I spent most of last night’s San Jose gig watching Larry work, thanks to a front row seat upstairs stage right. Amazing how he’s progressed technically from the early days (first saw them live in ‘81). You definitely nailed it with these covers.
I'm back for my U2 fix again. Thank you again so much for putting this together for not only your fellow drummer's, but U2 fans of all walks of life. Happy New year brother. 🥁🤙

Greetings from Ireland. Seriously good drumming there. And as a U2 addict I'd say it's probably the best I've seen/heard this side of Mr Mullen's. Jeez, if Larry ever pops his clogs you'll be a contender, no problem.
Wow man, incredible! I don’t care what so called experts say about Larry Mullen Jr. He was a great drummer and a creative pioneer. You did a GREAT job in your tribute to him. Larry would be a proud!
Thank you for this. I wanted so desperately to share what a groundbreaking sound he created in one of the best rhythm sections in rock, and no one had thought to compile the magnificent beats! Then you hauled ass on the scene. Thank you!! Sharing to prove ALL the points!
Well played, U2 fan from Boy to Joshua tree, they left me behind after that, but admiration for them continues as they pulled new generations from then to now.
I m fan of U2 sinnce the begining.i love them so much.i wait their next concert in France!i saw them twice time.Iit was wonderful.the best band of the world! Thanks for these 10 mn with best song of U2.
Brilliant choices, great playing. The aerial camera shows a lot of your technique and was my favourite view. Thank you for a very informative and interesting video.
Well done young man! You have shown me how some of the beats are done that I myself have been trying to replicate but have never found footage of. Keep up the skins your day of being discovered is on the near horizon.
Fantastic job! This is the best drum cover of U2 I've ever seen and even more it is a combination! The drum rhythm of U2 seems simple at first but actually it is a very unique combination. Simple but powerful.
surprise inclusion there was 'silver and gold'. didnt expect this to be there in your playlist. most underrated song. most underrated drummer. larry. you did it all these years. from new delhi, india
Man, this must be so hard. To switch tempos so quickly and so many times is something I just can't do. This is a great video and you are super talented, man. Keep it up.
You can see how much you love the band and their music. Man, I wish we lived in the same city! We would be playing some music! God bless you bro, you got some mad skills on them drumz!
Great job. As you noted, these are certainly signature U2 songs and not even necessarily Larry's best drumming songs...but really fun to watch. No Line on the Horizon has some of Larry's best drumming, IMO...to me an underrated album. I'll Go Crazy, Boots, Fez, Breathe, all interesting and good...and Stand Up Comedy sounds like pure fun to play on drums.
I really enjoyed this, thank you. Well done. U2's my favorite band, and I've always loved Larry Mullen, Jr.'s playing. It's those low notes that really make him stand out as a drummer. (Gotta love the floor tom, and tom toms, very present in WTSHNN and WOWY). cheers!

I read somewhere that Larry needs to see the lyrics to every song because he doesn't play listening to the bass, but rather to the lyrics, he uses the drums to help interpret the lyrics, a unique approach to drumming
Definitely unique!!
Interesting but it’s clearly drumming to bass. He’s great they are great and music is timeless
Not surprising. Everyone in the band seem to be on their own personal timing and still magically somehow seem to merge into what is U2's music.
Well they're all playing to a click track with cues telling them when to enter, to play fills, etc. Also they need to play with extreme precision or Edge's effects won't sound right, and obviously they need to be in sync with their video effects and backing tracks. SXI96 I read that about Larry’s session work w/ Alice Cooper
Larry Mullen, Jr. was the drummer that inspired me to start playing drums 25 years ago! Strong work!
An under-rated drummer for sure.
Alex Fong Absolutely. He is a great drummer with feeling for the music..
people are saying his style is simple, it isn't, i just came here from a video saying that his drum grooves are unique.. and as a musician it is really interesting what he is doing, lots of rolls, i wonder is he got elements of it from trad irish music...

This is hands down the best U2 medley I have heard!
What?? He forgot to add all the complicated drum work from One Tree Hill.
I'm a 30 year U2 fan... you just played through the soundtrack of my life brilliantly. well done.
Thanks man...that means a lot! :)
Robert Syzdek
Me too!
Me too!!! :)
Love this! Epic closing words! Thanks
Saw them at Woolsey Hall in New Haven Connecticut back on May 10th 1983. Bono's 23rd birthday.
I swear I could recognize all of these songs only by listening to the drums. Excellent drummer, thank you
Whenever Larry wants to take a break from live performances they now know where to look for his replacement. Great job, man.
Thank you man! That would be a dream come true lol
Haha that would be a dream come true! :-)
You can say that again!
Two-Twelve Ministries i said this too !!
Justin Amos have you never been to gigs when they invite guys up to play !!!
It's CRAZY to see how the drum has NEVER STOPPED BEING POWERFUL, however it has drowned down in the mix over the years
I legit started crying because I started thinking what I would do without u2. They have taken up all of my 12 years on this planet and when they die I don’t know what I’m going to do. I think I have just found a way to cope when it does happen. This is amazing. Words can’t describe how they and you have touched my heart.
Wow, thanks for the kinds words!!
No problem. You are an amazing drummer and if anything ever happened to Larry you should be who they call first. This is some amazing talent
You’ll have the discography forever. You’ll be fine
love your video man. us U2 fans gotta stick together these days
Thanks bro!!
Our love and admiration for U2 unites and binds us, just like the Force.
As a fan of u2 for 30 years, and someone who has seen them 16 times. Bravo young man. You have done Larry justice!!
Wow, thank you Mike. Really appreciate that!
Thanks for this. Larry Mullen the best understated and most quietly talented drummer of all time.
I love that amazing feeling of " being hanging on, waiting for something to happen" while Larry plays the drum 🙏🏼

Great work man. Zooropa and Pop are two oft-overlooked masterpieces.
Agreed, i thought for sure that "Stay (far away, so close!) would of been in this at least. That song is epic.
They are the last two great albums U2 ever made. Stopped listening to them after Pop.

Nice work! I've been playing along to U2 for years and Larry's drumming is simple yet always challenging me at the same time. Great job! :)
This is by far the best mix of history of u2 drumming I have seen coming from 1 drummer to another! Great job!!!
Hey Michael, thank you so much for the kind words!! Means a lot coming from a U2 fan and a fellow drummer as well!!
Merci, good prestation and, good selection of very good song .
