I flew First Class in the early 2000 from the UK to California. I was sitting in my alloted seat when this young kid came up to me and said I was in his seat. I asked him to have a word with the flight attendant. They both came back and the flight attendant asked me to follow her. She took me upstairs to First Class. I had loads of foot room, was given a glass of Bubbly, had the window seat and it was a great experience. Very comfortable. The kid probably didn't realize that I was happy to give up my seat to him! Didn't pay a penny more for being upgraded.
also happened for me around the same time. doesn't quite work that way these days. Unless they're in a serious time crunch to get pushed back, they'll find another passenger in the back who has some level of frequent flyer status or in the airline's loyalty pgm, move them up to first class, and move you or the kid into the upgraded person's old seat.
I grew up traveling Economy. I am an adult now and dream of traveling the world. I am at a loss for hope of finding a soulmate; however, traveling has always been a dream of mine. Traveling is attainable if i'm smart and focused. I hope I succeed. I'm subscribed to you.

Never been first class but have been business class for international flight. It was sweet, I had access to the lounge also. I saw what the first class looks like passing by to my seat and they look amazing plus they had better meals and selections. I hope to get into first class one day on an international flight.
You forgot to tell that the credit card you use for the Skyclub costs $500 a year and is worth it if you fly Delta a lot.
The better card if you are willing to pay that kind of money is the Amex Platinum card because you can use the Amex lounges plus priority club lounges all over the world. Delta dies not have Skyclubs outside the United States plus with the points you earn with the Amex Platinum you can use them to book tickets in any other airline not with the Delta card.

It’s certainly not free. It’s a side benefit of paying a high annual fee for the card.
First class is fun, but not worth paying for when you could put the funds towards a swank hotel🙋🏼♀️ the way you’re doing it is PURRFECT!

During the mid-1960s I travelled with the military across the Pacific Ocean. It was common practice for me to book "
space available." More often than not it seems seats in first class were the first to become available. Whatever the causer or reason, I usually ended up in first class.

That 1st class looks like economy on Emirates.
I believe Emirates economy is different depending from which city you are departing. I flew on Emirates economy and I was highly disappointed; it was the worse experience I’ve had flying.
You can go to the Sky Lounge arrival and departure on the same day. I did the lounge in Philly and my arrival in ATL on the same day. Fun Fact

I've done that post-flight SkyClub visit, too. (It's not allowed for all lounges, though.) After back-to-back first class flights on which I had been offered only Biscoff cookies and Sun Chips, it was nice to get a warm (and actually very good) meal upon arrival.
I love Delta Sky club. That credit card will get you into the AMEX Centurion lounges also (unlimited). JFK and ATL Centurion lounges are fantastic if you get in when they aren't crowded. LAX? Not so much...

But I am new using the Amex perks, including using the Delta Sky Club lounges. How do you go about trying to get an upgrade to first class? Do you simply go up to concierge and say "Hello, any first class upgrades available for Amex card holders?" Thank you!

Flew first class on delta and tried getting into sky lounge and was turned away. I now upgraded my Delta AMX card to gold and shall try again to get into lounge
It should be pretty clear when you log in to your AMEX account if you have access to the sky lounge. Just check before your next trip. I love the Sky Lounge. I actually like long layovers now.
Flying "first class" on domestic flights is not on par with First Class international flights. Unfortunately, your Delta Gold Amex won't allow you lounge access. It's the lowest tier of the Delta Amex cards. Plat is allowed but you have to pay $50 fee to get in. You need to have the highest tier Amex card, which is the Reserve(purple card) to get in for free.
Some of their criteria for lounge access Sky Lounge are:
1) If you have a First Class(Delta One) ticket on both international or domestic flight. Delta One is the lie flat bed suites, the most luxurious suite that Delta has. If you're on a domestic flight and your seat is not a Delta One suite, then you're not qualified. The normal domestic "first class" is basically a glorified Premium Economy lol Totally not the same level as the First Class ticket on international flights
2) If you are a Delta Sky Club member, which is $695/year to be a member, but also you can pay with miles but forgot how much miles
3) You are at least a Gold Medallion Status on the Delta Sky Miles Program. This is not the Amex card, this is the Mileage Rewards Program of Delta, which is a different program
4) You posses the Delta American Express Reserve card(Purple card). If you have a Plat or Plat Business, you can pay a $50 fee per person, per visit
5) The rest depends on your status on other airlines within the SkyTeam alliance, usually high tier level, and also if you have a SkyTeam Elite Plus tier status

I did it all wrong, I guess. I had a seat change, and I got a window seat, but it was in row 21 on an E175 (right in front of the aft restroom). 😆

I normally don't fly first class either. It is a lot more expensive than the economy class. However, I do pay a little extra for comfort (even though I have short legs:). If I am on a red eye or night oversea flight, I would like to book the first class especially if my first stop after getting off the plane is NOT my hotel room. I would need the flat seat to get as much sleep as I can!

Usually they tell you beforehand but sometimes you’ll find out when you scan your ticket last minute! That may have happened here.

I don't understand how you fly 1st Class for Free?
Because I have the right credit card, I get free benefits - like an upgraded seat on Delta almost every time I fly delta. I just run all my business expenses through that card. I have the Delta Sky Miles American Express card, but LOTS of credit cards do the same thing.

Domestic American "first class" looks like a glorified Premium Economy seat. Totally not comparable to international first class flights.

That’s because the aircrafts use for international are the biggest and American has new airplanes like Boeing 787-9
The reason I am able to buy my first class seats (haven't stepped out of 1st class in 20 yrs of global travel) is because I know that using a credit card to get points means it isn't free. A basic principle of getting wealthy is to not fall for BS like this- If I have to use my card to buy something off Amazon or other store it is factually not free- It may be cheap- it isn't free though. Doing it my way for example on Le Premier Air France I get greeted at the airplane door by someone who escorts me down the stairs to a car that takes me to the lounge while someone else deals with my passport and standing in lines etc.

@@LyfeUntethered Ha! It had to be over 20 years ago, but one of my coworkers was mesmerized the digital camera revolution and bought one of the best models available. She carried it with her everywhere was shooting a lot. A month later another coworker noticed she never brought her camera in anymore . She confessed that while she loved the instantaneous nature of digital, she hated buying all the "film." She had purchased over 40 compact flash cards. She was really nice so my coworker Mike said, "Mary Ann, you're missing the point of digital photography...." and went on to explain. She felt silly of course, but to ease her pain, several of us offered to buy her surplus memory cards.

First and Business class is the way to go,but when i see people who has never flown in those class and get a free upgrade,how they act,it bothers me...knowing i just paid thousands for my flight..some airlines don't give you lounge access if you get a free upgrade,example Alaska Airlines..and has limited lounges...I see too many people over indulge because it's all you can eat and drink,then the same on the plane..then when you reach your destination you feel like shit...dehydration can last for days...i try and avoid too much wine,champagne and drink as much water as i can...getting wasted on a plane and then you have an emergency,don't go together..
Another tip is to fly with your richer parents who are in first and me being the wastrel son is in economy

Excuse me sir, would you mind coming with me? We've found you a seat in first class.
I also got given as many of the remaining food items I could scoff!

@@JM32023 It depends on how much you travel and what airlines are readily available for you. I have the Delta Sky Miles Amex card, which works for me. We like Delta, we travel quite a bit, and we run our biz expenses through the card, which unlocks more perks. There are other Amex cards with lower annual fees that get close to the same benefits. A Delta Amex is a h-/ no. I was an Amex member for 20+ years and they cancelled my all 4 of my Amex cards when I went in for emergency open heart surgery and was unreachable for 2 weeks.
First class??? Premium Economy at a push.

Yep. Flew in from North Carolina last night and was bumped to Comfort + for 2 legs and first class for final leg. I get upgraded for free in 95% of my flights when I fly Delta.

There is no value on a short haul domestic first class.
