- Being out on the water is awesome. Wind in your hair and sun on your face. No better place to be. But when it all turns pear shaped, not so much. Things can get sketchy, really quick. Our oceans, lakes and rivers are taonga, treasures. But with them come risks, and Tangaroa is not a realm to go it alone.
That’s why as Coastguard Tautiaki Moana, we’re here. Not to measure the size of your fish. Not to search your boat. And definitely not to judge your boat-ramp backing skills. All we’re here to do is help. All we care about is keeping you safe. All we want is to see you out there, enjoying life on the water. Confident in your own abilities, confident in knowing we’ll always have your back.
Every day, across Aotearoa, we’re here for boaties, whatever your waka. Sometimes that means a simple tow back to shore. Or sharing knowledge and advice before you head out through our education courses. Sometimes that means putting our extensive training into action to make a difference between life or death. It’s what we do.
Day in day out, through a crew of over 2,000 highly skilled and experienced volunteers. Yep, that’s right, volunteers. People who love being out on the oceans, lakes and rivers of New Zealand - just like you. Giving up their days, nights and weekends not to go fishing, but to put in the mahi (work) to be ready for any scenario on the water.
So next time you see us out on the water, give us a wave. It’s always nice to know you’ve got friends out there if you need them.

TRANSLATIONS ⤵️
➡️Taonga - treasures, gifts, applied to anything prized or considered to be valuable including socially and culturally valuable objects, resources, ideas, techniques and more.
➡️Tangaroa is the atua (ancestor with continuing influence/god) of the sea and fish. In Māori and Polynesian mythology Tangaroa protects the ocean and its sea creatures. It is believed that if you take care of Tangaroa, he will take care of you in return.
➡️Tautiaki Moana is the name gifted to Coastguard in 2021 by Te Arawa Iwi. Tautiaki means guardian and explains what we do on and off the water - guarding and taking care of boaties on the water. The actions we take to ensure that with our support everyone can enjoy Aotearoa New Zealand’s moana safely and with confidence.
➡️Moana means sea, ocean, large lake or body of water.
➡️Mahi refers to your work or practise. We use the word mahi when describing the incredible efforts our volunteers go to, to save lives, train, fundraise, raise awareness and everything in between.

Great advert. Hopefully we won't meet, but good to know you are available when we need you. God Bless.
Cheers for that!

Great video. Looking forward to these changes. Building a better national brand will be good for us all.

Kia ora @autsonD, love this karakia. Thanks for sharing.
SO WE ALL HAVE TO SPEAK MAORI NOW
Hi Allan, thanks for watching! Just to clarify, our video celebrates who we are as Coastguard Tautiaki Moana without suggesting that everyone must speak Māori. Hope that helps clarify.
DID WE EVEN GET ASKED HOW WE FEEL ABOUT THIS NAME CHANGE ..OR IS THIS A PERSON BEEN IN THE JOB 5 MINUTES TRYING TO MAKE A NAME FOR THEM
SELF ..BEHIND YOU 100% GRANT
@@coastguardnz NO IT DOES NOT
Been a coastguard member for 30 years. I would rather see our membership fees spent of actual services not a woke rebranding. Even the government has seen the cost of such nonsense and is clamping down on this unnecessary costs, new stationary, new signwriting etc etc. Just stick to the job you and our great volunteers have always done.
I AGREE 100%
Kia ora @grantcooper8715 , this is all about making sure our organisation is future-proofed so that we can continue saving lives on the water for many years to come.
Not one cent of your membership fees or the generous donations we receive have gone to this project. Your contributions continue to go direct to where they're needed most - our Units on the front line.
We're doing this on a shoestring - no big brand budgets here, just the knowledge that in making the shift from being seen as an authority to boaties side by side on the water, we'll save lives because people won't be afraid to call for help.
YES I FEEL THE SAME ANOTHER 30 YEAR WET CREW THIS CHANGE SUCKS
So if this is not funded from our membership and donations how is the costs being paid??
What does putting maori words on the website and I assume stationery, rescue vessels etc make Coastguard future proof, or better serve the boating public?? What about some mandarin, or hindi, or Samoan etc for those boaties??!!. My 30+ years of experience boating and coastguard membership, being rescued and rescuing I have never heard of anyone being scared of calling for help. Again I think this is wokeism gone crazy and the effort and cost is better directed elsewhere
@@grantcooper8715the people who use the word woke are always the most offended 😂
